So, the last time we cruised with Disney, my daughter was 7. But we just booked a cruise for April and she's 16. Will she be stuck in kid-only sections of the ship/pools? My husband is concerned that she's going to get bored hanging out with littles the whole cruise...

There aren't very many areas reserved for 18+: the adult pool area and the adult-entertainment district/bars after a certain hour. During the day and early evening, they have all ages events in some of them.

If she doesn’t like other kids but can tolerate you, maybe it’s a sweet spot to do things as a family before she goes off to college and the rest of her life. ☺️
I think she is excited about the teen club, but that's definitely why we booked this cruise, so we could hang out with her and have some fun shore ex with her before she is not able to hang out with us anymore. <3

We have frequently been told on several occasions that our teens were not allowed during the day in the district bars and events scheduled within. Though, I will also add that we have seen several minors present on other occasions as well- so I guess it depends on the cast member. I find the lack of consistency extremely annoying, as I would love to have my kids with me at these times during the day. (And no my kids are not ones to act up that they are being asked to leave)

Even in the Cove Bar we have been told immediately after being handed our orders that the kids cannot stay. We are not ones to be rule breakers, but haven seen others take kids in….yet the time we bring ours in to get a drink or pick out a pastry, it never fails, we are the ones to be scolded lol.

I have found this rather disappointing as Disney is marketed as a “family cruise line“, and there seems to be a large amount of adult only areas or activities that don’t necessarily need to be exclusive to adults, though I do understand some parents wanting alone time. I am anomaly, as my kids get older, I see it as the less time I have with them before going away to college. 😢

The bars and lounge areas in the "adult" areas can vary as to when/where under 18s are allowed during the daytime when there are activities scheduled in them. All bars & lounges in the adult area are 18+ in the evening/nighttime.

Cove Cafe is always an 18+ adult area.

The Cove Bar is in the adults-only pool area, so it makes sense that teens under 18 would be asked to leave.

The DCL app should indicate when the bars in the entertainment areas change to adults-only. Activity descriptions in the app indicate whether the programs are for adults or for everyone — some activities are designated for adults even when the venues are open to everyone.

Of course, it is possible cast members are not aware of what the app says or do not always enforce the age limits.

Yup, I am aware of the app noting the 18+ in the event- we made sure to check when we saw minors present at each event after our kids were asked to leave. (My internal Karen moments, as I never actually complain other than to my husband and now the disboards🤣). I stand by my lack of consistency comment.

I know Cove Cafe is in adult area, however I frequently have seen kids go in with parent. I do not have issue with this but apparently many adults do. 🤷‍♀️ This is one location I do not understand why it is considered/in adult exclusive area.

My teens loved cruising. One was into Vibe, the other, not so much. We always seemed to be able to find a quieter area of the ship, as a family, in a family area, to relax, read, play cards.

Yeah, our kids were 12 and 16 on our Disney cruise. 7 days on the Magic
We were apart twice for a total of 2 hours during the week.
DD went to a Music Trivia contest in the kids club. Only kids club thing she did and she found it boring.
DW and I went to a Champagne tasting.
At that age, with school, and after school sports, we only saw our kids about 3 hours a day during the week.
Our cruises with our kids were our week to hang our "mom and dat" hats and the gangway and just be our kids friends for a week.

Because I am a family of adults and I go to the adults-only areas to be with other adults and away from those under 18 and that's the rule. Yes, they are inconsistent sometimes in enforcing it, and if it's more than an in-and-out of someone under 18, I will make a complaint. I don't complain if it's in-and-out, but I'm still annoyed by it because the rules are quite clear. I don't pop into the children or teen areas which are reserved for them so I don't see why adult-only areas can't be respected by others.

The adult areas are supposed to be 18+. They will occasionally check ages of anyone who doesn't look old enough. DD19 and I were just getting into an empty adult pool at night and they asked to see her key card on the Dream this summer. (The key card will have a letter indicating if they're over 18, over 21, or a minor.)

My kids were 12/16 on the first cruise; 14/18 on the second, 18/22 on the 3rd and 19/23 on the 4th. It's been really nice to have us all be adults the past 2 cruises! In only 2 yrs, your daughter will be at that point. For now she can enjoy the teen club and all the family friendly activities --movie theater, theater, crafts, trivia, etc. There is still plenty to do and she will not be surrounded by little kids all day. A lot of them should be in the little kids clubs!

Yes, that's kind of how I feel as well. When we have been on NCL, our daughter hangs out in the adults only pool and we have never been scolded for it. Maybe it's because she looks much older than she is. But my hubby is definitely bummed that she can't be in the adults only pool in DCL.

And I am not trying to stir up drama on the boards by any means… I completely get that some want adult only time. For me that is my time in the spa. But at the same time it is family oriented cruise line, so I just try to not to let things like this bother me, unless the kids are acting up, which is a different story. 😝 I have seen some adults go to the extreme by just seeing children even if well behaved and just passing through. My mind says try Virgin if kids bother you that much lol!!

But again, if Disney was consistent, I probably wouldn’t have posted either way.

My husband and I are two adults with no children; we are a family.
