A family member who is in his late 30's is going to have an MRI tomorrow night to find out if he has a tethered cord. Does anyone on here have experience with this?? Any info would be great. TIA!

Tethered cord is usually associated with spina bifida. With spina bifiad, the cord tethers itself to scar tissue resulting from the surgical closure of an open spine. The procedure to release the tether depends on how much scar tissue there is. Results vary. Best of luck to your friend.

Wow, unusual to see this in someone that old. This is usually picked up in childhood. Surgery is usually required, but results can be very varied.

Seeing the age of the person, are you sure you have the correct terminology?

Could it be a twisted cord? That would be in his testicle and you may have misunderstood the term used. This happens to young men and does need medical treatment and can be quite serious.

Not saying you did get the words wrong just taking a guess.

Nope, it's a tethered cord. We've been reading about it a lot and in some cases it is not discovered until the person is an adult. When I first heard about it I was shocked too since I know it's normally dealt with when children are very small.

He went for his MRI tonight and will find out on Monday. Say a prayer that it's not a tethered cord if you wouldn't mind!!

Best of luck to you and your family. My DD6 had an MRI over the summer to rule out a tethered cord and luckily everything was normal. Hugs and prayers that you will have the same results.

Well, my daughter just turned four and she has VATERS Association and she had tethered spinal cord. Obviously she is not an adult but if you would like to know anything I would share our experience.:flower3:

I've met someone with this, who is an adult. I actually have a mild chiari malformation, and have done a lot of reading on tethered chord in conjunction with my chiari research. I was pointed to the Chiari Institute as being the best in treating this

Luckily, I haven't had to make use of this center, as mine is really insignificant, but you might find some good information at their site!

This is so not what I thought this thread would be about! I was sure we'd be discussing someone's MIL!

I hope everything turns out OK for him...
