We are in the process of purchasing a 50 point contract at Old Key West. I know you can add on 25 points through Disney. My question is does the add on have to be at Old Key West? Do you have to pay closing costs on small point add ons through Disney? We want to pay cash for our ownership and we through buying 50 points would get us in the system and then just add on 25 points a year paying cash each year. The 50 points will get us 1 vacation every 3 years, but we want to build up to every year. I was thinking that we probably should have bought a contract at Saratoga because then add on points should easily be available the next few years. If you own 50 at Old Key West can you add 25 at SSR?

Thanks.

Yes, you can add on at any resort. The only condition is it will have to be the same Use Year. Adding on at SSR would probably not be a problem since it's still under construction. But adding on at BWV for example could be a problem since Disney might not have any points available for your Use Year. A resort like BWV already has a wait list for add-on's, but it's not just a matter of being on the wait list, but being on a wait list for your particular Use Year.

Minimum add-on through Disney is 25 points which you could do paying cash. Minimum add-on if financing through Disney is 50 points. There are no closing costs when purchased through Disney.

It doesn't make any difference whether your initial purchase is through Disney or via resale.

Your plan is workable, but adding on at sold-out resorts may not be easy to do on an annual basis, year after year. It all depends on how flexible you are about which resort you want to purchase.

I suspect add-on points are easily available at OKW as well. A couple of months ago they were sending out emails offering thousands of points available in numerous use years. Somebody did the math and estimated that they had 10,000 OKW points available at that time.

But, as Caskbill correctly notes, points will not always be available at all resorts in all use years. Many of the smaller resorts will be tough, especially for certain use years.

To maximize your 11-month reservation window, it would be helpful to have enough points for a typical stay in one resort. But beyond that, you may want to branch out a bit.

For example, Disney is currently offering a nice add-on incentive for SSR points. Buy 120 add-on points at SSR, get 100 one-time points free. The one-time points go to your original contract, which in your case would be OKW. That incentive may no longer be around by the time you close on your OKW purchase, but there will be other incentives, so you may want to check out all options when you are ready to buy more points.

Hi,

did I get it right. If I would buy a resale of 50 points I can add-on from 25 points of each available Resort through Disney?

Yes. However you only get the 11-month booking window for the number of points you own at the single resort. For example, if you add-on 25 points at VWL, you can only use 25 pts per year (or 50 if you bank or borrow) to book VWL at 11 mos.

If you need to finance the purchase through DVC you need to buy at least 50 points at a time.

Finally, some resorts do not have points immediately available. If you want points at BCV, VWL or BWV, you will almost certainly have to go onto a waiting list and wait for the points to come available. You may not get the points for several months.

You can add on any resort for as few as 25 points cash and 50 finance. It could be 26 or 51 if you desire. As mentioned, you only get the 11 month priority for those points owned at that resort. While I like smaller packages, I think you can get too small to make it worthwhile. Make sure you buy the number of points you need and if you're going for the home resort priority, buy enough points to make it work. Of course one could try to take advantage of the inability of DVC to track transfers and buy totally separate contracts and get around the 11 month window by transferring. And while it's a loophole that might close soon, DVC has been "working on closing the loophole" since at least 1999.
