I just wanted to update. We decided to not buy any tickets in advance and went straight to the ticket booth (something I always try and avoid!) But when I told them we wanted the Deluxe pass (we are out of staters and the Flex Pass is too risky for the kinds of trips we take) they gave us an exemption ticket to get into Disneyland that day even though it was blocked off for the Deluxe pass. DCA was NOT blocked off for that day.
There was some concern if this would work since usually both parks are either blocked or not blocked.
This worked great for us because we got to use our AP on a day that would normally be blocked off and started using our AP discounts right away.
