Dh and I want to cruise next June. We're planning on staying at BWV for 2 nites prior to the cruise. The problem is, if we have to change the dates on our trip, will we be penalized in any way? DH will have his vacation schedule the 1st of Dec but I want to make ressies in order to insure that we get the room at BWV and on the ship that we want.

What do you suggest?

The answer is maybe. In general you will not be penalized unless you are within 30 days prior to your ARIVAL DATE. The entire reservations is judged to start on the arrival date. The penalties that might occur for changes prior to the 30 days center around your use year, banking and borrowing points. Say you couldn't go in June but could in August or Sept. For some this would be in a different use year. So if you were using banked or borrowed points and your replacement trip were in the next use year, you would not be able to use any banked or borrowed points for the new reservation that were being used for the old one. That might mean you lose the points. Plus depending on when you made the change and a few other factors, you might or might not be able to bank any points to the next use year when you did change the date.

This is why use year can be an important consideration for some. For those that have a consistent travel time or times, they are best off with a use year that starts just before the time you usually travel. It just gives you far more flexibility if you do have to make alternate plans.

My UY is Dec. We have 26 pts banked from '03 that have to be used by November 30, '04. We have all of '04 coming this dec and plan to travel June of next year. It would probably only be a change of 3 to 4 weeks. So, there shouldn't be any problem, right?

Also, can you purchase trip insurance when using points? If so, what is the cost?

You should be set assuming availability. You can purchases insurance but most members don't. It only returns about $5 pp.

Keep in mind that once you reserve a cruise with points, the points cannot be used at a DVC resort if you decide to cancel. They become reservation points and can only be used outside of DVC and expire at the end of your use year.
