I booked my cruises with Chase Sapphire Preferred because it comes with pretty good trip insurance. It does not cover medical or emergency evacuation. I'm looking for trip insurance that only covers those. However, most cover a lot more stuff (that I already have covered). I'm also looking at an annual policy. We have 2 cruises already paid for and will be staying at DVC resorts in Florida before/after the cruises. It's possible that we will also make it out to Aulani, but not exactly a sure thing in that 12 month period. Do you have any recommendations for either an annual policy or a medical only policy? My husband is on Medicare. Do you know if Medicare covers travel related illness/emergency? I'm assuming we'll only need something like this is we have to be helicoptered somewhere. We're only going to the Bahamas and specifically only Disney islands. We have an Alaska cruise booked, too, but that would be after the 12 months.

We just bought annual health insurance only from Geoblue. We drive to the port and our only concern is the health and evacuation insurance. We had bought individual policies in the past, but as we are cruising more, we decided to go annual. We have not had to use it (definitely not complaining about that). I am fairly certain Medicare does not cover you out of the country, and we are both on Medicare.

That looks perfect!

Do you know if Medicare covers travel related illness/emergency?
Most likely not, but check his specific Medicare plan and/or Supplement plan. You would need coverage for the Bahamas (DCL private islands are in the Bahamas) and Canada. Also if he has a plan that limits him to a specific network it may not even cover in another state.

Below is an article about medical coverage on trips through Medicare. I have a Supplemental plan that has a $50,000 Lifetime cover. But I also bought an annual medical evacuation plan through GeoBlue. Much lower coverage once you turn 70. I guess that’s when you start to fall apart!

Travel insurance through Medicare

Medicare Part A and B do not cover health issues outside the U.S. HOWEVER, if you have a Medigap policy it COULD cover you outside the U.S. Mine does. And if you paid for your entire trip on one credit card, check that too. As you mention, no need to pay for double coverage.
Like all insurance, it is all about how much risk you are willing to take and where you will be sailing. While the chances of needing a medical evacuation are very small, I do know someone who had to be airlifted off a cruise ship. It was absolutely free because he was half way between San Diego and Hawaii and the only people qualified to medivac him was the U.S. Coast Guard. And it is against the law for the Coast Guard to charge for their services. If you watch The Deadliest Catch, all those rescues from fishing boats are free.

I have a plan currently with Travel Insured via USAA. This is the first annual plan I've had, and I haven't had to make a claim yet, but trust USAA to go with a reputable company and it has good reviews.

It did add on a pretty penny to include CFAR on our trip to Egypt & Jordan in November, but that was to be expected. I've added in some smaller trips that I normally would have risked going without insurance, so I'm definitely ahead any way you slice it. I've had some health stuff come up in the past couple months so I def want it for all our trips at the moment until things calm down. I specifically got this because I was also concerned I may need emergency evac, so I feel you. Base it only covers 100K but for $50 more (per trip) that goes up to 400K with two allowed incidents per year/plan, which should be enough for all except the most far flung places.

Annual travel insurance is a good peace of mind purchase, especially if traveling from the US to outside the US. We're also pleased to get a policy from Allianz, which includes solid medical coverages abroad should we need them, but also includes car rental coverage (not liability) in the US. As always with insurance, we hope we never need it - but the company is reputable and the coverages are what we're looking for. And they have annual policies that cover up to 45 days of travel and up to 90 days of travel every year (for the 12 months of the policy).

We also got GeoBlue coverage. The medical/evacuation coverages are just what we wanted.

I have purchased annual Allianz insurance for the past several years. I never had to use it but I like the peace of mind and more cost efficient than purchasing travel insurance per trip in my opinion.
