ABCs of Trip Reporting, Pt. 2-Life Can Be Crappy and Then You Move On (3/7)

Hello! I'm jumping into this report quite late, but I see this everytime I step into the TR board so I just had to check it out (: I'm still not very far into the report yet, but I'm enjoying it so far. You have a great sense of humor and I'm loving the games so far :teeth: I'll post once I'm fully caught up, great job so far :thumbsup2

Dinner at Cali Grill looks lovely! I'm actually excited to try it!!

And since you asked...the reason the server will pour a little bit of wine first is so that you can make sure it isn't spoiled or "corked." They'll also show you a bottle to be sure that it is what you ordered, especially if you ordered the bottle because it's a certain vintage, and it might be a typo on the menu for example. So basically you're examining the wine for it's color first, then the smell (if it smells like vinegar, it's corked) and then taste. If it tastes "off," you're okay to send it back. But you're not really supposed to say that you don't like it and then send it back. BUT if you're not really sure if you'll like the wine and you're hemming and hawing, a good waiter/waitress will offer to bring you a taste of the wine that they think you'll like for you to try. So I don't really think it's the end of the world and less of an issue if you order a glass vs. a bottle. And if they offer for you to try it (which it sounds like she might have?) then you're perfectly fine to make a "gag me with a fork" face and ask for a different wine!

Anyway, you go through the whole tasting of the wine to be sure it's not spoiled. Now you know!

OK, NOW I know. Thanks for clearing that up, cuz, honestly, I really didn't know. And frankly, I'm not sure I'd even know if the wine was spoiled or not; I mean it IS fermented ("spoiled") in a sense. Glad I wasn't a complete buffoon anyways :)

I really think you'll like CG. Like others have said I wouldn't base your decision solely on the fireworks; go for the excellent food and view in general.

:rotfl2: OK - That's funny (but so true)!

Your meal sounded amazing ( I almost wrote looked, but I haven't seen the pictures yet). I love when a meal sounds spectacular even when I can't see the pictures. I love cali Grill and I am psyched to be eating there in December!!!!! :thumbsup2

Yeah, it's the sad reality of parades and pushy people. :sad2:

I had to edit the photo links in, as I had forgotten a bunch of them when I first posted... they should all be there now. :3dglasses

I know you're going to really enjoy it! I would caution anyone going, to NOT try to rush it. Let it be the main attraction of the evening, and linger a while.

Chef Mickey's!! :thumbsup2

Not even close!

So why did you bother getting changed? You could have kept your other clothes on and then spilled all the water you wanted. Oh well...next time.

"You have a point there, my dear. An idiotic point, but a point nonetheless." <I can almost guarantee you will never guess that movie quote unless you google it>

You whined about your wine? A smart-alecky waitress could have shot back, "You want some cheese with all that whine?" And then you could have said, "Yes, please!"

:lmao::lmao: Oh that was RICH! Sounds like something right out of the 3 Stooges.

Much better than the Diet Coke of Regret.

Oh man! MUCH better. I gagged on the diet lemonade; it would take an awfully bad wine to actually bring up bile.

I agree: it's pizza. And it looks great! :thumbsup2

It was fantabulous! Way better than say our regular Papa Murphey's Friday night fare.

Gesundheit. Actually, it's pretty cool that one of them has "Caveman" in the title.

yeah, and it had to be the blue. They were the ones who probably invented it when their milk fermented and molded in a dark cave one day.

Goodness...so many directions to go here...:rotfl2: At the very least, I'm swiping the term "mystery balls" to use in future TR's.

Well, if you have to steal something, mystery balls would be what I'd go with too. :lmao:

But if you watch if from the Poly beach, you get reflections on the water. And nobody to fight in line for the monorail, so you can get on it and wait through a breakdown much quicker.

See about movie quote.

Tate makes friends quickly, doesn't he?

He's a lady's man (most of the time) through and through. And never misses an opportunity to try on his lei.

Liesa, I'm sorry to hear that life is making unwelcome intrusions lately. It would be so easy without all of the people we have to deal with, wouldn't it? But then again, they say the same things about us! I hope and pray you have some peace...and soon.

Thanks, Mark. I was dealing with the aftermath today of every crate, box, trunk and trinket taken out of every closet, drawer and cupboard last night, and of course, not put back. They made it through exactly one cupboard of antique glassware last night that was divided up. The sewing room that I wanted to have cleaned out most was not even touched. Gripe, gripe, gripe. Rant over.

I'm so glad to hear you loved the cheese plate. It's totally okay to turn your nose up at wine you don't like. You're paying for it after all!!! Riesling would be a good choice :thumbsup2 I have to agree with you on Wishes. It's not the same without the crazy mothers throwing kids around :rotfl2:

This is true, Jen. I don't think they lose money on pouring a small sample, especially since it was a bottle most likely already opened. It would be interesting to know how many bottles they DO go through a night. :confused3

Actually, I really enjoyed it from the Poly Beach as well... but that's getting ahead of myself, to quote the Greatest Biscuit.

Fantastic update:thumbsup2

CG looked amazing. I would rather watch Wishes from Main St too, but the food and company at CG looked great.

Why thank you so much! :goodvibes I can't think of a better way to spend an evening if you have several more park days ahead of you, and you can spare an EMH. I would totally do CG as a chillaxe thing!

Liesa, what a wonderful update! I love long and leisurely meals like that - I think that's why I end up eating at the signature restaurants at WDW so much... :rolleyes1 And yours sounds like a perfect event. And I fully agree with you on Wishes. I won't bother anymore with trying to see it from CG, one of the most overrated experieneces in my opinion. But if others want to go there for it, they are welcome to it! :thumbsup2 I just rather be there for sunset over the GF... :goodvibes

I really think the signature restaurants are a hidden gem! If you don't have a HUGE appetite, one can easily make a meal out of the HUGE portions Disney gives out; a salad or an appetizer can easily feed one! Add a dessert to split and honestly it's not a whole lot more than a meal at one of the other restaurants around. The sunset was amazing- I think we did get there just in time to see a bit of it. And I did enjoy the view of the MK in general too.

You couldn't be more welcome my dear. I just hate you had to go through all of that. Hopefully now you can totally have your house to yourself and you can get on with life as it should be.
And thank you for your nice words about the post, I love you my friend and I'm here for you any time you need me. :lovestruc

Cali Grill looked pretty good. I'm surprised to hear the fire works seemed small and far away considering how close you are to them, I will keep that in mind when and if I make an ADR there in the future. Looooove the pics of you laughing, I love seeing people have a good time.

I hope life is going to settle into a "new normal" soon. We really have no more BIG events for a while until school starts, and of course that's going to take a HUGE getting used to. But I think I am going to start slowly easing back into the Boards (SLOWLY!!!!!!, People) and see how it goes. I do have canning that is coming on full swing, and tomatoes and beans are going to be a life overtakiing thing for a spell.

I can't imagine what was so funny, other than my doing my "spill the water routine". You know that one well, as I was sitting across the table from you in Salem when I pulled it last time. And I hadn't even had a drop of liquor in either case yet.

Sounds like a wonderful meal at California Grill! I especially liked the sequence of laughing pictures. :thumbsup2

It was so perfect! We actually had a couple of amazing meals during our trip. I'll get to them sooner or later... well, ok, later. A lot later. :rolleyes1

I guess I was about to split a gut there over something...

WOW!!! A big, huge, gigantic :welcome: to you!!!! It's awesome to get a new reader, when I've been so utterly absent the past few weeks. We do have a lot of fun around here normally, and at times it can be tough to keep up with, but for at least a little while longer, you'll have plenty of time to get caught up, and have a few yuks. :) Welcome aboard!!

What a fabulous time at the CG. Remember those moments when life slaps you inthe face. ::yes::

As far as real life slapping you in the face, I am sorry you have to deal with that.

This summer has been stressful for me and and in so many different ways I am glad it almost over. Maybe it is something in the air?

I am sending thoughts and prayers for you to have some peace soon and a return to normalcy.

Ah, Pat, I love you!! Thanks for the encouragement!

HAHA, I JUST posted on your thread, and I want to read one or two threads a day for a bit.

We checked in below (I say that because I actually have NO idea which floor check-in happens) and were immediately taken up (I have no idea which floor that is either) to the restaurant level.

They used to blindfold people, and make them spin around 10 times, but then they found that that was completely unnecessary....no one could find their way back anyhow.

2010SeptDisneyDay5453.jpg

Aw, look at your sparkly top. I couldn't tell that from the earlier ("transformation") picture.

I don't know about the spilling water thing, but I'm amazed at all of the paperwork that is required to dine at California Grill. Look at all of that in front of you! I'd need to bring my lawyer along. (And then you know who'd get stuck with the bill.)

Now, I never purported to be a wine connoisseur, so took a stab in the dark when I ordered a glass to chase my cheese with. She brought out the bottle and gave a taste. OK, here’s a BIG question for those in the know… Is it okay to make a “gag me with a fork” face and say you’d like something else if you don’t like her choice? Because, I’m pretty sure that’s what I did.

Kelly did a great job explaining this earlier. I agree with her 100%. We used to have a family friend that would routinely send bottles of wine back, that she had ordered, just because she didn't "like it". That's not the intent at all -- when they pour you the first glass and wait to see if you approve, it's really to see if it has spoiled, which is pretty rare. But in the case you described, where the server brought it out for you to try, you are perfectly okay deciding it's not what you'd like.

I went with a Riesling in the end, and was pretty happy with my second choosing.

That's one of Judy's favorites. A little more on the sweet side.

For you fellow cheese aficionados...

The term is "turophile". ;)

You look like you're thinking, "But I ordered the shrimp cocktail!"

Reypenaer VSOP; Nancy’s Hudson Valley Camembert; Truffle Tremor; Fromage d’Affinios de Brebis; and Caveman Bleu.

Another vote for the Blue Caveman! Andy maybe even the Truffle Tremor.

LeeAnn got some sort of salad with mystery balls. I have ZERO idea WHAT those are made of, but am certain they are not cheese. If memory serves, crab rings a bell? But there’s nothing like that on the menu anymore.

I can't add anything beyond what the Captain already said.

DSCN9954.jpg

(Tate didn’t mind being left behind at all)

He looks like he had maybe an even better time than you did...but he's not tellin'.

/
Well - first of all your shirt is very pretty!

Secondly - you are cracking me up with those pictures! I'm laughing right along with you.

Lastly, the food looks fabulous - just as I imagined.

Holy red spaghetti sauce, as my daughter posted yesterday on FB! That's a lot of multi-quoting action there!!

I'll have to take the weinie way out and red up my responses...

They used to blindfold people, and make them spin around 10 times, but then they found that that was completely unnecessary....no one could find their way back anyhow.

It is an utterly mystifying process, only the most imaginitive of Imagineers could muster up.

Aw, look at your sparkly top. I couldn't tell that from the earlier ("transformation") picture.

I was all sparkly and ready for some serious cheesiness. All I needed was my tiara!

I don't know about the spilling water thing, but I'm amazed at all of the paperwork that is required to dine at California Grill. Look at all of that in front of you! I'd need to bring my lawyer along. (And then you know who'd get stuck with the bill.)

It was daunting to be sure. One was the cheese menu, which was the ONLY way on God's green earth I could have re-created the listoid.

Kelly did a great job explaining this earlier. I agree with her 100%. We used to have a family friend that would routinely send bottles of wine back, that she had ordered, just because she didn't "like it". But in the case you described, where the server brought it out for you to try, you are perfectly okay deciding it's not what you'd like.

It was pretty obvious that she was waiting for my like or dislike- she had only poured a tiny bit... and seriously, there is NO way I could have choked down the first choice. I wasn't going to pay $9 for a glass of undrinkable slop.

That's one of Judy's favorites. A little more on the sweet side.

I routinely go to a Riesling for my regular table wine.

The term is "turophile". ;)

OK, Mister, I"m going to look that up right now!

Alright, you win this round... but I"ve got you next time!

You look like you're thinking, "But I ordered the shrimp cocktail!"

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Another vote for the Blue Caveman! Andy maybe even the Truffle Tremor.

They were all GREAT cheeses- some, like I said, too rich for my taste. Or maybe I just ordered the wrong wine. :confused3:rotfl2:

I can't add anything beyond what the Captain already said.

He definitely won that one.

He looks like he had maybe an even better time than you did...but he's not tellin'.

Mum's the word!

Well - first of all your shirt is very pretty!

Secondly - you are cracking me up with those pictures! I'm laughing right along with you.

Lastly, the food looks fabulous - just as I imagined.

Why thanks!! I got it in Dubai and still love and wear it!

yeah, more laughing!!

YUM!!!

You guys really need to have this ENTIRE TR printed out and turned into a book! There is NO WAY I can possible catch up....sheesh! lol

Ok back to reading I go :rolleyes1

No need to go back and "catch up"; just pick up where you left off, and we'll all be very happy you're back ! :goodvibes

I know, there's no way I'll ever be able to catch up to the dozen or more I was keeping up with until last month either. Most folks are pretty understanding and will be gracious to let you into the fold again. Great to have you here again, Rebecca!!

Looked like a great meal at CG !! I would love the cheese plate for sure !!!!

Being English, Rosie, I would sure hope you'd like the cheese plate!! It's a good choice! :thumbsup2

It's......so....sniff.....beautiful......

Okay mister, I saw your great picture and went to check out the resort and ran across the big free dining breakout yesterday and now I've gone and done it. The POFQ won't work for out family this time, but I was tempted by the Fort Wilderness cabins for the 7 of us. With the free dining in February and a large family of big eaters, we decided to switch our DL plans to WDW. I'm still not 100% sure but wanted to get on the planning. I doubt anything will change my min: the money's there, the time's there, free dining sounds fun, and these kids of mine aren't gettin any younger. It just wasn't the plan and I'm not always good at spontaneity- though I guess planning a trip 6 month out is not exactly living on the edge.:rotfl:

Guess it's time to go get me one of those banners.:cheer2:

Just have to :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: on you going to WDW for the first time! Some awesome adventures await you!!! Let the planning begin! We love to help plan over here!:thumbsup2

Yup ... those banners are the ticket ... LOVE knowing you've "seen the light" ... and even tho I haven't stayed in the cabins I have to let you know my VERY FIRST Dismemory is held at Fort Wilderness. I recommend you look into the "Hoop De Doo Review" since it's on home turf and you have "big eaters" in your group.

Yes, and camp fire with Chip N Dale! HDDR is certainly very fun!

:scared1::scared1::scared1: I think I'd have moved my dates up, Rosie!! WOW!

Yeah, I remember when I was a little kid, those ride cars seemed so huge!!! :lmao:

YES! Indeed that WOULD be an epic DISMeet.

And YES, James DOES need a trip to WDW; every kid should go at least once, right?

Plane tickets can be killer. For us it'd add about $400 per ticket (x7). Not going to happen anytime soon. Luckily we have family in KY and can drive 14 hours from there.

Wouldn't plane tickets be just as much to KY? I find it costs us the same to fly to LA or San Antonio or MCO.:confused3 Too much in any case.

Liesa, I'm so sorry for the drama at your house. I didn't see Camille's post yesterday. Really tough time and so hurtful. I'll be joining in prayer for peace and wisdom for you. God will use all of this for good and for His purpose.

Now your TR - you cleaned up right nice, miss drippy pants!:goodvibes

Looks like so much fun at CG. I had the cheese plate at Flying Fish and loved it! There was a Cranberry Blue from Calif. that I loved - I'm not usually able to eat Blue - I"ve been trying to find it ever since. I think I found it in Gold Beach, but they wouldn't sell it to me.:confused3

I love your fireworks pics! I know it's small, but I can imagine enjoying it - definitely not the way they make it look in the advertisements, though. I was looking at the castle below and thinking about all the people standing down on Main St looking up and getting a thrill from being so close!

I'm sure they have had all kinds of wine adventures, so just do with it.

Oh, and I'm sure Mary ate her broccoli - it's her favorite, right?:goodvibes

Liesa, great update. I'm really looking forward to give CG another chance in October, as I was not too impressed the first time. And just imagine: the first time I saw Wishes was from CG, I couldn't really understand why this should be something so very special. Well, I found out later, when we watched it from the hub...

I hope all the things troubling you at the moment get resolved quickly and you can feel completely at home again at your house!

Well I came back figuring I would be waaayyyy behind and was surprised it wasn't so much that way.....until the final couple of pages! First of all enjoyed the update. Looks like you three had a great time at CG! Haven't tried that one yet. Maybe one day!

Sorry to hear you came back from your camping trip to so many challenges! Thoughts and prayers that The One who can handle all things will soften hearts and heal wounds so you will have peace in your life and home again!

"You have a point there, my dear. An idiotic point, but a point nonetheless." <I can almost guarantee you will never guess that movie quote unless you google it>

Ok, I even googled it, and I still have no idea what movie that's from. It does, however, sound like one of my favorite movie quotes of all time, which is from Billy Madison. Feel free to use this in regular conversation when the need arises (You can insert "Mark" instead of "Mr. Madison"):

Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Alright so I'm all caught up now and I must say, I'm completely jealous of all these DISMeets you had. Ever since I discovered what that was, I've been discussing trying to plan some and have come close to making some, but it never happens. Of course, I'm only 15, so they wouldn't involve places other than Disney, but still it's a DISMeet nonetheless. :thumbsup2

I'm also loving your mini-TR. I really hope to go to DLR, the place where it all began someday. And I can't believe you actually got to work there! Then your aunt and mom have pretty much been there since OPENING! Wow... I would totally bombard you with questions about "Retro-DL", since I'm such a DisNerd, but I'll wait until the next update hehehe (:

I'm guessing there is much more to come since you just finished the 5th of 11 DAYS! WOW! So I can't wait to read more about this trip and what else you have in store for this TR! :mickeyjum And since you've continually wished us a magical day, I would like to return the favor and hope you have a magical day! :goodvibes

Wouldn't plane tickets be just as much to KY? I find it costs us the same to fly to LA or San Antonio or MCO.:confused3 Too much in any case.

yeah, they are; that's why we only get to see my folks there about once every 2 years. Things will be rather tight for us for sure, until I get my degree, and I can get to work. From Kentucky, we would most likely drive the 13 hours into Orlando rather than pay the $200 per ticket from there. When you have or 7 tx to buy, things sure add add up quickly.

Liesa, I'm so sorry for the drama at your house. I didn't see Camille's post yesterday. Really tough time and so hurtful. I'll be joining in prayer for peace and wisdom for you. God will use all of this for good and for His purpose.

It's been a stressful week for sure! The confrontation thing is not going to go away any time soon, which makes me sad, and as far as the family drama over dividing up "stuff"- well, at least they all settled on what everyone agrees is a fair method. That was half the battle.

Now your TR - you cleaned up right nice, miss drippy pants!:goodvibes

Not bad, not bad.;)

Looks like so much fun at CG. I had the cheese plate at Flying Fish and loved it! There was a Cranberry Blue from Calif. that I loved - I'm not usually able to eat Blue - I"ve been trying to find it ever since. I think I found it in Gold Beach, but they wouldn't sell it to me.:confused3

That is strange that they wouldn't sell it! Yes, bleu and cranberries pair REALLy well! Love that combo! :thumbsup2

I love your fireworks pics! I know it's small, but I can imagine enjoying it - definitely not the way they make it look in the advertisements, though. I was looking at the castle below and thinking about all the people standing down on Main St looking up and getting a thrill from being so close!

No, definitely not like a glossy brochure. I think you 'd need a really fancy lens to make magic like that- ...... or an airbrush. :sad2:

I'm sure they have had all kinds of wine adventures, so just do with it.

I"m sure every server has dozens of hilarious (and some not so much) stories of goofy things guests do.
That'd be a funny book to read someday!

Oh, and I'm sure Mary ate her broccoli - it's her favorite, right?:goodvibes

She claims it to be. :lmao: Yeah, I actually think she did eat it now. somewhere I think there's a picture of her empty plate. Maybe she can dig it up??

Liesa, great update. I'm really looking forward to give CG another chance in October, as I was not too impressed the first time. I think giving it a fair second chance would be nice. I hope at least they can point you in the right direction for your food intolerances and have some nice offerings to draw a good opinion from you.

CG is definitely NOT the place to watch the fireworks from for the first time. I think is should be declared Newbie Rule #32!

Things will smooth out; they always do. At least I know that I've done what I felt I needed to do- now, how this person receives it is up to them.

Well I came back figuring I would be waaayyyy behind and was surprised it wasn't so much that way.....until the final couple of pages! First of all enjoyed the update. Looks like you three had a great time at CG! Haven't tried that one yet. Maybe one day!

Hey Marv! I tried to FB chat you the other day, but you must have been ummm..... cooking dinner, yeah, that's it, cooking dinner.

Nope, I'm still on my pathetic hiatus, and can't imagine the work I have cut our for myself in catching up. I haven't even been on your thread (the ONLY one I followed for a while, but since I fell to #6 even after having done SUPER well in last few rounds was still getting further behind so gave up on that too.).

Anyway, things do pick up briefly after an update, and the last couple days, I've had a bit more time. I INTENTIONALLY (in my world these days INTENTIONALITY is a must!) took a day off. I stayed in bed writing until almost 11:00, did some housecleaning, then got back on the computer until 5:00. It was bliss. Now I'm ramping up for 3 solid days of running around again, from a visit to a firends, 2 days in a row of piano lessons, the county fair, an advising session for Michaela, grocery shopping, and likely getting Andrew his driver's license. OH yeah, and a Civil War themed birthday party at a local historical park on top.

Anyway, life is full of challenges, and I know this too shall pass. Relationships tend to heal over time, and if they don't, they might not have been worth pursuing in the first place. So THANKS for your prayers, my friend! It's times like these where good friends are a treasure indeed!
(did that sound like Wadsworth or Longfellow?? Hubby "drew" a few antique books in his turn to choose something )

Ok, I even googled it, and I still have no idea what movie that's from. It does, however, sound like one of my favorite movie quotes of all time, which is from Billy Madison. Feel free to use this in regular conversation when the need arises (You can insert "Mark" instead of "Mr. Madison"):

It's from Marilyn Monroe's first- a Bette Davis classic called All
About Eve. The same movie that "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night" comes from. Go rent it- if you like Film Noir, it is a MUST see!

Alright so I'm all caught up now and I must say, I'm completely jealous of all these DISMeets you had. DISMeets ARE super fun. But I think they are most successful if you know the people pretty well before. The first one I had was a bit awkward, and it was hard to make conversation having had really little "background" and common forum experience to draw from. So my advice it to hang out with the poeple you want to meet quite a lot here on the boards, and then meet. It will be WAY more fun!

but that said, YES, they are a blast!! I'm sure you could find local peeps to get to know, then you could plan a regional one. :yay:

I think you're going to love what's coming up in later in the TR for DLR! I happened to be there when they were having a Mary Blair exhibition, and got to see a TON of her art! For DisneyNerds like us, it was thrilling!!!

Hopefully, I can get the photos uploaded today, and work on the writing of the next DLR post today, so you can have more to read. I need to speed the pace of this one up some, OH! to just find the time!!!

I have 5 kids, (one is a girl just a bit older than you) and 3 of them are trying to get their driver's licenses in the next couple weeks. That is taking a bunch of my time- but we'll see....

And thank you!! Iwill have a magical day- I get to go visit one of my dearest friends!!
