My sister and I are taking this trip to celebrate her kidney transplant, but after 4 months of feeling great, she has just started having some problems. She is scheduled for a procedure under general anesthesia TWO DAYS before we are supposed to leave! Her dr. thinks we can still go, but I am wary because things are never uncomplicated when it comes to procedures for her. We have trip insurance on both the Disney trip and the airfare. Do you think we should just wait and see how it goes and if worse comes to worst we cancel at the last minute? I don't see any upside to canceling now, do you?

P.S. Anybody know a lab where we can get blood work drawn on Disney property? We won't have a rental car.

Yikes! I'm sure I wouldn't be up to/couldn't fully enjoy a WDW/DCL trip two days after being under general anesthesia. As much as it hurts to do it, if my trip was covered under insurance, I'd reschedule.

I agree, I'd re-schedule. That way your sister doesn't have to worry about anything except feeling better. There is so much to see and do on the cruise, it'd be a shame if she didn't feel well and was stuck in the cabin the whole time. Plus, how comfortable will she really be at sea if she's not feeling well? I'd re-schedule for a time in the near future, that way it won't be to far off, and you can give her some re-covery time.

In all honesty, my bet is that DCL would not allow her on the ship if she is still suffering from the after affects of general anesthesia or a clinical procedure.

There is no lab on WDW property, the closest place would be the hospital at Celebration, there is no WDW transportation to get there. You'll have to either take a cab or rent a car for a day.

You were wise to purchase the trip insurance. I just wanted to add my .02. I was on a Caribbean cruise last year (non Disney) after having had a proceedure completed. It was for a sales incentive so it didn't cost me anything. Although I had a fairly decent time. I was slightly distracted the entrie trip because of the healing.

I wouldn't do that again....and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone...ESPECIALLY on the type of trip I am certain Disney has to offer

Something to think about...

CentraCare in Florida offers urgent care centers and they definitely have labs there. They also have vans that come to all the WDW resorts to pick you up and they will take you back to the resort as well.

Good luck to you and your sister; I hope you are able to go now or re-schedule for sometime soon. :)

She would not be able to fully enjoy the cruise experience and you would both be on edge the whole time. The prices may even go down, I have seen some posted within the past few days.

When we last cruised 12/8/01 we had to make an unscheduled stop because someone was so sick they needed urgent care. We had not reached St. Maarten yet and I believe the island was DEFINATELY not a tourist attraction- the name excapes me for some reason but it sounded like one of the South American troubled countries. San Salvador maybe- I think so as that sounds like El Salvador. Anyhow this island did not want our ship anywhere near it. They had a boat out watching us and the person had to be transported by a life boat to the island and then shortly after we saw a plane take off. My point is that the ship's doctor is finely skilled for small things but if something serious happens it could be quite scarey to leave it up to the "locals" to see if they would accept you. Also the person had to go alone from what I heard, the family flew home from St. maarten. I would rescedule- especially since you are covered.Ann

Wait and see how it goes. By that time she would have already recovered from the general anesthesia. My main concern would be discomfort from the surgical procedure. I don't know how much pain there would be. Then there's always the possibility of post op complications such as infection, etc. to consider.
