I too can confirm that it's not just boys who have messy rooms as DD's room looks like a tornado hit it. 
Every Saturday morning I get her to tidy it and by Sunday morning everything is back in it's place covering every inch of the carpet and every inch of surface space. She has so many cuddlies it takes an age just to make the bed.
I have now reached the point where I refuse to tidy it. I sit there directing her while she does it - but up to now it hasn't cured her of her habit of just dropping things where she is standing and never putting anything away.
The laughable thing is, when she get's her own place it will probably shine like a new pin!
