I am almost afraid to say this because I really don't want to be rude but I think she's referring to your first full sentence, which ends in "at". (And yes, since I am pointing out a possible error I fully expect this post to be embarrassingly error filled! )

Oh. Well, regardless of which sentence she was referring to, I still think it's rude. Especially since the idea conveyed in my sentences wasn't lost due to a grammatical error.

I can understand asking for clarification if an error changes the meaning of a sentence (re: the whole "eats shoots and leaves" idea), but for the most part I think it's rude.

If I wanted my spelling and grammar corrected, I would ask someone. But not the person who once changed the word "verbiage" in a memo I wrote to "verbage" because I spelled it wrong

Yikes! Even when I'm actually supposed to be correcting spelling errors, I try to double and triple check before I do it. I can't imagine doing something like that!

My husband's boss once corrected his use of "grammar" to "grammer".

I've told this story before, but it's so good I'll share again:

An attorney I worked for and I had a rift over the use of "renumeration" and "remuneration". The document was discussing money, so it should have been "remuneration". She told me I shouldn't question her because she was the attorney and I was "just" a secretary. A week or so later when she was working on a document she finalized it and asked me to photocopy it and leave it for the partner. As it was running through the machine I noticed when she ran spell check she replaced "public" with "pubic" but who was I to question -- I'm "just" a secretary. She noticed it on her copy before the partner saw it, then questioned if I had seen it. I told her yes and she asked why I hadn't stopped copying and corrected it. I told her it wasn't my job, I'm "just" a secretary.

I haven't read the entire thread so I don't know if this has already been discussed.

Way back in the 80's and early 90's, children were taught to read and write by some method that stressed sounding out and spelling words exactly as they heard them. Just as an an example, a writing exercise was graded acceptable if "you" was written as "u".

I didn't like it then and I believe its effects are evident now. The only solace is that our hapless children do have spell check on their computers and other devices.

Since the red underline thing came out on web browsers, I have become A LOT less careful with my spelling. I just wait to see if something I type gets underlined, if nothing is underlined, I figure everything is fine. I will also guess at words, and then use the suggestion to correct my spelling.

Actually, go back and read what you wrote. The first real sentence does end in a preposition. The first "sentence" is a fragment.

Anyway, sorry, I thought I read that you thought this was a good idea. I guess I didn't read your posts carefully because that wasn't the tone I was perceiving.

It doesn't really bother me - and I'm sure I've made my fair share of mistakes over the years - but I suppose I can see how it might bother others.. We all have our own quirky things that tend to bug us.. For me, spelling on a message board just doesn't happen to be one of them..

For the most part it doesn't bug me either, I don't expect doctoral thesis level writing on an informal message boards where folks are casually discussing things.

I do find that some things bother me more than others. For example, a person who writes 500 words in no caps and with very few punctuation marks makes it very difficult to read or understand their writing and I tend to not even bother.
