A thought about spelling

The one that gets me the WORST is "would/should/could of".

Do people not get that when they say "would've" when speaking they're actually saying the shortened version of "would have"???

I have an issue with effect vs affect. It's a pet peeve. It drives my DH batty that I complain about it all the time LOL!

What about using the wrong word altogether just because they sound the same?

"It doesn't phase" me should be "faze" me.
Mexico and the USA share a "border" not a "boarder".
You "toe" the line not "tow" it unless you are water-skiing.
You "rein" in your spending not "reign" in.
It's a "moot" point rather than a "mute" point.

And next door rather than next store.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the DIS were able to allow us to go in and correct other posters spelling? I keep reading the same wrong words from people so I know they aren't simple typos. Seeing some of the words is making me crazy today! :rotfl:

I'm not perfect and make plenty of spelling mistakes myself and wouldn't be the least bit offended if someone corrected mine.
I've seen similar spelled *simular* 3 times today and I think this is what set me off on this rant. So sorry if I'm offending anyone. :cutie:

:flower3:

I would love that. I saw "simular" earlier and I so wanted to correct it! I also saw a post where someone had used "an" for "and" about twenty times, and by the end of it I was ready to toss my computer through a window.

Umm, no. If I wanted to feel superior, I would just come right out and tell people that I thought I was better than they are.

I wish I understood why this bugs some people so much.

I have so many more important things to worry about. The world is not going to end because someone spelled "dining" wrong.

I'm also surprised at how often a plural word gets written as a possesive. My BIL does this constantly so I know it's not just a typo or muscle memory thing. Maybe another Disney tip is in order?

Yep saw that one today as well......and yep, I cringed when I saw it. LOL

(I hadn't seen any complaints about spelling today so I thought I'd post one. My day isn't complete if I don't read at ONE thread on spelling mishaps! LOL)

Is it just spelling that bothers you. :confused3

.

Why does being bothered by misspelling equate to feeling superior? :confused3

Agreed. But it sure doesn't make the person look like a genius, either. :rolleyes1

I like it when it's done in fun. A friend and I will joke about voila/viola and occasionally even say "cello!" just to be silly. But generally you can tell when it's done out of ignorance, laziness, or apathy, and that bugs me.
My son accidentally said "incrazable" (incredible, crazy), and I'm keeping it, for use with friends, but not in general on the DIS, lest someone think I'm serious! I agree...most times you can tell if someone "gets it" or not about correct spelling or word usage, but not always.

This kind of makes it sound like you do think you're superior to the other posters just having a little fun on this thread. :confused3

Just last night I told DH I think I'm Lactose and Tolerant. Sometimes you hear/read something, and it's just too priceless not to use for fun. ;)

The one that drives me up a wall is "loose" when "lose" should be used.

You guys could make a living from me alone. I am the worlds worst speller. :rolleyes1

I'm constantly asking my sons how to spell some thing.

So what are some tips to improve your spelling? I keep thinking of the old memorization drills. ugh

Oh boy, I agree. Seeing "dinning" in the title put me off so much I could not read the post! My other gripe is the "apostrophe s" when not needed. Plural does not require an apostrophe s! (Where is the poster who's signature says something to the effect "every time you use an 's where it's not needed, etc"?)
