A thought about spelling

Since the red underline thing came out on web browsers, I have become A LOT less careful with my spelling. I just wait to see if something I type gets underlined, if nothing is underlined, I figure everything is fine. I will also guess at words, and then use the suggestion to correct my spelling.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes it will not correct the misuse of words :rolleyes1

Not at all. There are so many things I'm not good at. But those things aren't out on display. I feel so badly for people who are bad spellers or have trouble with grammar because those things are pointed out and nitpicked on a very regular basis.

These threads pop up frequently, and every time they do I feel bad for the person who thinks that "dinning" IS the correct spelling. Or that voila is pronounced and spelled wa-la.
But this thread - and past and future ones like it - are about spelling and grammar errors. It's a discussion. It's not me on the Transportation board ignoring eliza61's point completely and instead saying, "You spelled this, this, and this wrong". You spell fine, by the way, eliza; I was just using you in my example because we both post on that board :teeth:

If the anonymous posters who misspell or misuse the frequently-mentioned words happen to read this thread and happen to recognize their misuse and correct it, great. If they don't, they don't. But nobody's attacking anyone - well, except maybe the people in this thread who are criticizing the original poster and those of us who agree with her/him ;)

What about using the wrong word altogether just because they sound the same?

"It doesn't phase" me should be "faze" me.
Mexico and the USA share a "border" not a "boarder".
You "toe" the line not "tow" it unless you are water-skiing.
You "rein" in your spending not "reign" in.
It's a "moot" point rather than a "mute" point.

And don't forget the ever-popular "balling my eyes out."

This kind of makes it sound like you do think you're superior to the other posters just having a little fun on this thread. :confused3

Kind of? I'd say definitely. No, wait, I mean defiantly. ;)

This. No one on this thread is attacking anyone, mentioning anyone by name, etc. I couldn't tell you who uses "rediculous" if you held a gun to my head, so I'm not thinking about particular posters. I just know that it's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I still see nothing wrong with gentle correction now and then

As I said the overdramatization is unnecessary. (it's also quite unlikely that I spelled unnecessary OR unlikely right :lmao: )

A bad speller is just a bad speller. I'm sorry you seem to feel so much anguish about the subject of spelling. I feel more anguish when someone trips and falls, when someone does something that embarrasses them and stuff like that. Pointing out crappy spelling just isn't that big a whoop if you ask me.

Sorry. I've been called insensitive before and it's bound to happen again. That's just the way I roll. :goodvibes

Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they're overdramatizing. That's how I feel. I'm allowed to think it's rude. That's just the way I roll.

Gentle correction? Unless you're my mother or my boss, I really don't see how that's necessary at all. And, again, gives off a superiority vibe.

Maybe I misunderstood the intent of the thread. I was under the impression that the OP thought it would be great if we could correct people's spelling on ANY thread.

And again... disagreement doesn't equal attacking, either.

Spelling is a cross - country issue. For example in early post I used the word "programme" - that is the way we spell it in England. Someone in the response posts actually corrected me and told me it was program! :rotfl:

Here in England we spell centre - the US is center, and I'm sure there are many other examples! :)

Be honest now : who else is very carefully reading through their post to make sure it is spelt correctly!!

Well, I went to a British-American school overseas and we were allowed to spell all of those types of words either way and the teachers had to accept either spelling.

I came out quite messed up! :rotfl2: I still put an "u" in many words- colour, honour, cheque, and on it goes!

Well, since this is a grammar and spelling thread, may I point out the following......

Your first sentence should not have ended in a preposition and your second sentence used the word badly incorrectly.

More than once, the topic has turned into a bashfest on how uneducated people are because they can't spell.

My brother struggled with spelling his whole life. It just doesn't connect for him. And there are so many things he can do that I can't. I wouldn't want him pointing that out to me on a regular basis.

My DD had an British kindergarten teacher. She (the teacher) was in an exchange program and apparently she brought many of her materials over from England. Poor DD couldn't understand why her phonics sheets kept coming back with so many marked wrong. :lmao:

When I said that I had better things to worry about... I meant that I can't fathom being so bothered by a misspelling that I would actually correct it on someone else's post (if we had that ability).

First of all, I couldn't be bothered to care. But more importantly, the act of doing so just gives off a superiority vibe to me. That's just how I see it.
I'm guessing the OP's OP is somewhat (ya think?) tongue in cheek. ::yes:: I don't think she ever really expected to be able to edit other people's posts. :thumbsup2 It's just a mild frustration/amusement thing, itching to fix something...incorrect spellings and misuse of words that are seen over and over again on the DIS and IRL. I think you're missing the point of the thread.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes it will not correct the misuse of words :rolleyes1
Are you TRYING to give me a stroke?

I was under the impression that the OP was jokingly saying that it would be nice to be able to go in and discretely correct the spelling in other people's posts without drawing attention to it. In theory, that would seem like a win/win situation to me. The person who made the error wouldn't be embarrassed by having her error pointed out and the person who is irritated by seeing the error could fix it. In reality I'm sure it wouldn't work very well since you'd probably end up with some of the "dinning" people correcting "dining" each time they see it, which would drive the "dining" people even crazier!:rotfl:

You say you feel bad for the people who think that "dinning" and "wa-la" are correct. Maybe if they read this thread or one like it they will realize that those words are incorrect, and then you won't have to feel bad for them any longer.

Ooooh yeah

Things neither "peak" nor "peek" your interest and "waaalaaa" isn't even how "voila" is pronounced!!!! What about the "v"?! :confused3

Spelling is a cross - country issue. For example in early post I used the word "programme" - that is the way we spell it in England. Someone in the response posts actually corrected me and told me it was program! :rotfl:

That's what I call an "incorrection." ;)

As an Internet Explorer user I downloaded the free spell checker from www.ieSpell.com. This can be set for for UK, US and Canadian spellings. Once installed it shows up on the right mouse click as a menu option.

Regardless of how much spelling mistakes bother some people I would NEVER want ANYONE to have the ability to change my posts on the DIS. I know this question is rhetorical, but the thought of that just makes my head spin. :scared1:

Well, see, it can be done in theory.

Oh you are a sneaky one, aren't you? However, anyone could see the correct version in my original post. I'd be more afraid of people changing my original post. Without everyone quoting every other post, how would we know who was telling the truth? We've seen plenty of people go back and change their own posts, but to give others that ability as well? :scared1::scared1:

I agree! I was just teasing you

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the DIS were able to allow us to go in and correct other posters spelling? I keep reading the same wrong words from people so I know they aren't simple typos. Seeing some of the words is making me crazy today! :rotfl:

I'm not perfect and make plenty of spelling mistakes myself and wouldn't be the least bit offended if someone corrected mine.
I've seen similar spelled *simular* 3 times today and I think this is what set me off on this rant. So sorry if I'm offending anyone. :cutie:

:flower3:

:thumbsup2

After reading here too long, I start to question just how words are spelled. Some are terrible. Not just once, but over and over.

I would think that I made it pretty clear that I find this to be incredibly rude.

But since it's obviously necessary to play this game, "all" is not a preposition.
