A thought about spelling

You guys could make a living from me alone. I am the worlds worst speller. :rolleyes1

I'm constantly asking my sons how to spell some thing.

So what are some tips to improve your spelling? I keep thinking of the old memorization drills. ugh

You must use spellcheck then because I've never noticed. Your posts always seem very well-written to me. But I think just reading (not the DIS, though ;) ) goes a long way towards improving spelling. If you see words spelled properly over and over you'll learn the correct spelling through repeated exposure. Also, there are plenty of websites devoted to improving spelling and grammar, just google.

"Weary" and "leery" don't mean the same things. "Leery" means cautious or suspicious. "Weary" means being tired.

When people post about something being "hugh" when they mean huge, I always want to say, "Hugh who?"

My son accidentally said "incrazable" (incredible, crazy), and I'm keeping it, for use with friends, but not in general on the DIS, lest someone think I'm serious! I agree...most times you can tell if someone "gets it" or not about correct spelling or word usage, but not always. This kind of makes it sound like you do think you're superior to the other posters just having a little fun on this thread. :confused3

Just last night I told DH I think I'm Lactose and Tolerant. Sometimes you hear/read something, and it's just too priceless not to use for fun. ;)

I remember that one. That was funny!

We have so much technological help these days in regards to spelling, that I think even the best spellers get a little complacent and forget the correct spelling of words. Just recently I was typing an email on my itouch to someone at church and, of course, the typing program "guesses" the word you are trying to type. Luckily, I read over my email because it had converted one of my words to "aroused"!!!! Eek! Can you imagine a church member getting that email! :scared1:

What I don't get is why people choose to point out errors, point fingers, and poke fun at. It's just an informal forum. We all make mistakes. Everyone!

"Weary" and "wary" don't mean the same thing, either, and I can't count the number of times I have seen people say that they are "weary" of something when they actually mean they're "wary" of it. That annoys me almost as much as "mute" point, which I've already seen on other threads a couple of times today.:headache:

LuvCuteBoys: I imagine most people do have more important things to worry about. I know I do, unfortunately. Somehow having other things to worry about didn't magically make my pet peeves go away. . . and sometimes it's nice to vent about the little things instead of focusing on the big ones.

I love autocorrect errors. :rotfl: There was a thread recently about favorite characters, and someone listed "Eyesore". It had to have been autocorrected from Eeyore. I laughed till I cried about it! There is a whole website devoted to funny autocorrects, but I don't think I can link to it since the title isn't terribly Dis friendly. Plus, many of the posts are really not family friendly, but they are hilarious.

Not at all. There are so many things I'm not good at. But those things aren't out on display. I feel so badly for people who are bad spellers or have trouble with grammar because those things are pointed out and nitpicked on a very regular basis.

These threads pop up frequently, and every time they do I feel bad for the person who thinks that "dinning" IS the correct spelling. Or that voila is pronounced and spelled wa-la.

More than once, the topic has turned into a bashfest on how uneducated people are because they can't spell.

My brother struggled with spelling his whole life. It just doesn't connect for him. And there are so many things he can do that I can't. I wouldn't want him pointing that out to me on a regular basis.

Oh boy, I agree. Seeing "dinning" in the title put me off so much I could not read the post! My other gripe is the "apostrophe s" when not needed. Plural does not require an apostrophe s! (Where is the poster who's signature says something to the effect "every time you use an 's where it's not needed, etc"?)
Ahem...that would be "whose". Just sayin'. ;)
LuvCuteBoys: I imagine most people do have more important things to worry about. I know I do, unfortunately.
Of course there are more important things to worry about. Altho (yes, I got in the habit of shortening "although") is there anyone on this thread "WORRIED" about bad spelling?? :confused3 Take away all the topics everywhere on the DIS that there are "more important things to 'worry' about" and there wouldn't be much to the DIS, would there.

As far as there being more important things to worry about, well, we could all be doing more important things than reading and posting on a Disney messageboard, but we are here right? Sometimes its just about distractions, venting , entertainment and just plain disconnecting from those big issues.

I can't imagine anyone actually worries about it. It bugs me, but it doesn't worry me. It seems as though every time there's a thread like this, people have to mention that they have more important things to worry about or that they have bigger problems. Honestly, I just can't understand why anyone even brings it up. I can't imagine there's anyone on earth who doesn't have something more important to worry about. I don't see what that has to do with the pet peeves mentioned on this thread. Real problems and pet peeves certainly aren't mutually exclusive.

I'm sorry but that's pretty funny :rotfl:

There's definitely no "A" in definite (definAte).

The sad part is one of the offenders was a teacher.

When I said that I had better things to worry about... I meant that I can't fathom being so bothered by a misspelling that I would actually correct it on someone else's post (if we had that ability).

First of all, I couldn't be bothered to care. But more importantly, the act of doing so just gives off a superiority vibe to me. That's just how I see it.

(Where is the poster who's signature says something to the effect "every time you use an 's where it's not needed, etc"?)

And this is why I don't think we should all go around correcting each other's grammar and spelling mistakes :thumbsup2

njmom... I hope you're/your/yore laughing!

I am a terrible speller and I use Firefox which has a built-in spelling editor. Before that I used my email client to spell check. MS Explorer also has a spell checker. There are many ways to check your spelling before you hit "enter".

I wish I understood why this bugs some people so much. Spelling and grammar, for me, represent a certain artistic flair. In fact, I sometimes use inappropriate spelling on purpose because properly spelled words just don't get the pizazz I want. Words can be so bland, so flat, so utterly without character, sometimes it's nice to see someone jazz them up which makes me think of the word in terms of phonetics, maybe the spelling will even cause me to read it with an added an accent. Shakespeare made it a habit to make up words as he went along an since I'm a huge fan of his I kind of like it in others
Creating a word, or combining two words, because the "right" word to express a thought doesn't exist is one thing. Using the wrong version of a word because one thinks it shows artistic flair or is jazzy? No. It just makes the writer appear that they don't know or don't care about presenting their thoughts and ideas clearly.

I'd like to refudiate you here, but it's late, and my brain is just fried. :lmao:

It's not spelling mistakes that get me, it's wrong words, like accept/except.

Actually, you CAN edit. Just quote somebody's post and hack away at those spelling errors!

I NEVER thought to do that! It's a great idea...and it wouldn't call attention to it!

I was reading something today online (NOT on the Disboards) about the Dunns River Falls in Jamaica. The person was saying that if you didn't bring water shoes with you, you could get a "pear" for $5.

Oh boy.

.

A pear? Oh that's a good one!

Rediculous!

When I see that one used here it's sometimes been a tipoff that someone is posting here who isn't supposed to be. :p

"uphauled" = Appalled

I admit, that one made me cringe.

Holy buggers I've never seen that one! Very creative!

Umm, no. If I wanted to feel superior, I would just come right out and tell people that I thought I was better than they are.

I have so many more important things to worry about. The world is not going to end because someone spelled "dining" wrong.

You're really overdramatizing here.
I don't feel superior at all. I have atrocious spelling and try to work on it as often as I can and honestly, I do feel a small bit of concern about teachers that can't spell worth diddly and yet somehow they managed to get teaching jobs.

How did they pass tests? How did they write papers? How did they get through college? If anyone here is a terrible speller please tell me how you grade your students papers? Do you recognize when a student has spelled something wrong?
I genuinely wonder about this.

Is it just spelling that bothers you. :confused3

And the nature of your question is?................

Just last night I told DH I think I'm Lactose and Tolerant. Sometimes you hear/read something, and it's just too priceless not to use for fun. ;)

I actually AM lactose and tolerant! :rotfl:

I have a word of the day thingie on my computer. I look up words all the time and I sometimes remember where I wrote the word wrong and will go back and correct.

There's nothing wrong with being a bad speller and I don't know anyone who hasn't spelled a word wrong now and then. No biggie but there also isn't anything wrong with being gently frustrated with seeing SO many spelling boo-boos! :flower3:

The hugh one makes me giggle because I wanna do the same thing. Hugh who? :lmao:

I still see nothing wrong with gentle correction now and then and venting here has actually taught me how to spell several words correctly, words I thought I was spelling the right way! LOL Didn't hurt my feelings any and if anything I'm always glad to learn new things.
I have tons of dyslexia in my family, a few of them so severe the people can barely read. Even they laugh at their own writing mishaps.

As I said the overdramatization is unnecessary. (it's also quite unlikely that I spelled unnecessary OR unlikely right :lmao: )

A bad speller is just a bad speller. I'm sorry you seem to feel so much anguish about the subject of spelling. I feel more anguish when someone trips and falls, when someone does something that embarrasses them and stuff like that. Pointing out crappy spelling just isn't that big a whoop if you ask me.

Sorry. I've been called insensitive before and it's bound to happen again. That's just the way I roll. :goodvibes

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the DIS were able to allow us to go in and correct other posters spelling? I keep reading the same wrong words from people so I know they aren't simple typos. Seeing some of the words is making me crazy today! :rotfl:

I'm not perfect and make plenty of spelling mistakes myself and wouldn't be the least bit offended if someone corrected mine.
I've seen similar spelled *simular* 3 times today and I think this is what set me off on this rant. So sorry if I'm offending anyone. :cutie:

:flower3:

As this board is famous over the whole world many of us read and answer in a language that is not there own.
Sometimes I spit coffee on my key board reading some board names here.:lmao:
Sometimes they are really offending but that's the problem with different languages. Like the Tower of Babel there will always be spelling problems. :thumbsup2
