A size 8 is now considered XL??

Apparently for Barely There...the ladies underwear company...this is true. I went shopping this past weekend and was looking at their "boy brief" style underwear. It looks like mini-shorts...low enough for just below the waist jeans everyone is selling. Well, their tags were labled as an 8 - XL. This was the highest I saw them for this style. This thing was teeny tiny...my 13 year old is a 3/4 already. Should I put her on a diet now so that she doesn't balloon up to the gigantic XL size of 8??? What is this world coming to when we now lable size 8's as XL!!! Come on, for pete's sake!!!

If your talking ladies panties, size 8 is not the same as pants size 8. I do believe that an 8 would be an XL by the standards for undergarments.

The sizing for undergarments are not the same for regular clothes. An 8 is about an 18 - 20, I think.

yep.. its got nothiing to do with traditional pant sizes.

i think it goes.. 5-small 6-med 7-large and 8-x-large.

Some manufacturers move that sizing by a size either way...

Underware is not sized the same as pants. Yes size 8 is XL. I did not know this until 11 years ago after the birth of DD11. I bought size 12 hanes & boy was I surprised when I opened the bag. I wear 10 jeans & a 6 or 7 panty.

Believe me when I say that these were small. They would in no way, fit a size 14, 18,etc. as some of these posts have said. I was starting to think they were for juniors/teens not ladies.

Maybe they were mismarked? If they were a stretchy material they could start out looking small and stretch to fit.

The stretchy ones always look much smaller but they do stretch to fit... trust me

Yes, I've seen sizing that follows what you listed. However, these were definitely not a size 16-18. Believe me.

Okay who is the idiot who came up with a sizing system that sounds like pant sizes but is in actuality a totally different sizing system ? In fact, why can't women's clothing be like men's clothing and come in either S M L XL or else actual measurements? Why are numbers just made up for us ?

Thank you all for clearing this up. I've always wondered why I had so much trouble finding underwear that fit.

My theory: someone thought up this sizing system soley so we would have to buy many pairs before we realized what they were up to. Why can't sizes just be standard?
