A question about the dermatologist's office

I'm taking DD to the dermatologist's office today to see the aesthetician for microdermabrasion.

Do I treat this like a visit to a spa and tip the lady, or not, since it's a doctor's office? I didn't tip last time and now I'm wondering if I should have.

Thanks, I was pretty sure I wasn't supposed to! I didn't tip last time because it seemed like it would be stupid, but I thought I'd double check before we went back today.

Hi,

I am an esthetician. It is a common perception that you don't tip at a doctor's office. It is up to you if you feel that a tip is warranted or not. You can always ask at the reception if tips are accepted or allowed. If they are not accepted at the practice, they will tell you so.

My general "rule of thumb" is if the person is a medical personnel or not. If a nurse performed the service then I probably wouldn't tip. But if the person was an esthetician, I would. But if I thought the service was great and they were very thorough in talking me through the procedure, hazzards and common problems and after care, I would tip no matter who did the service.

There are all kinds of different ways estheticians get paid and they are not close to what medical personnel does. So I am sure that tips are always appreciated.

Hmmm. This is a particular pet peeve of mine. It strikes me that if there's a feeling like you ought to be tipping, maybe this stuff doesn't belong in a doctor's office.

I say this because it now takes over 6 months to get an appointment with any of the dermatologists in town for a genuine medical problem. You can, however, get right in if you want Botox or other unnecessary junk.
