A pregnant what?????

Agree, it is just a story the media picked up and exploited to sell, sell, sell.

Well he didn't help matter by appearing on talk shows and posing for magazines. You don't think that maybe, just maybe he exploited some of this himself?

If a DNA test indicates female, that person is female, regardless of what she 'wants' to be. And, she can still can herself whatever she chooses.

What I don't get though is if he truly wanted to live his life and forever be known as a man why keep the uterus?

FTM is a very expensive process. The ability to add is not quite up to standards as subtracting in (if you get what I mean). Many have top surgery and are waiting for bottom to be perfected. Some just cant afford it.

It is not a "want".
It is probably something that you and I cannot fully understand because we are not going through it.

And you can spout DNA all you want, but lets face it my best friends mother is no less her mother even though DNA tells a different story.

I'm so sick of that guy/girl. He's a girl. Chosing to live as a man. So it's not a MAN having a baby. He still has a uterus- that makes him still a she imho. If they want to have a baby- good for them. I am just sick of hearing about it as if it really is a MAN having a baby. (not refering to you op I am talking about the media)

:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

The story originally appeared in The Advocate. I think when major news started to pick it up he chose to talk about it in the mainstream so he could control some of what was being said and not be made out to be some freak.

I really think it is important that he spoke out. Trans people are much more common than I think most people want to believe.

SHE had a baby. She has a uterus. If she wanted to be a man she should have gone all the way and have her "wife" have a baby or adopt. I think this is just a publicity *****.

I feel sorry for the baby.

See I don’t. I feel sorry for children born with drug additions. Babies left in cars as mom goes and shops. Babies that are “lost” for months then show up in the back yard. Babies that CYS has to deal with everyday (get what I am saying). I do not feel sorry for a baby that is wanted ,loved and cared for.

I am taking it that none of you have any trans friends or family. If any of you did you would know that this is a man who happens to have a uterus.

I think it is wonderful, and I wish him and his wife a lifetime of happiness.

Thank you! This whole thing has really been bugging me lately. His daughter is beautiful. And I wish his family the best.

Wow!!! I love how all of you feel it is so easy to adopt!! Especially when you are not a traditional white hetero couple!!

That’s like saying why don’t all those couples who get pregnant using drs just go out and adopt! People want to have biological children and nobody should tell them they shouldn’t. I mean why did you have children when there were children out there to adopt? It is a personal choice and one that is only yours. I am sure they would have liked if his wife could have the child but she could not.

I think it was a huge mistake on the part of the parents to make this into a media circus. And it's flippin' idiotic that the media is hyping this up to the extent that it has. But what's the most ridiculous is the number of people out there who are up in arms about whether it's a man or a woman who gave birth. It's none of your business. I don't give a rat's behind about the entire situation and simply wish the family well.

Edited: Not worth it.

I agree.

I think it is too bad the way the media is portraying the pregnancy and birth. This is not really that sensational, IMO.

Yes he is living as a man and good for him but for medical purposes as long as a person as a uterus then it is not a medical miracle that they have a baby. Medically he is still female.

I understand transgender.
What I bugs me is that it is exploited as a man having a baby as a medical miracle when in fact this is not the case.
It is misleading.

I agree with all of this. It's possible to be frustrated with the media for framing the story in a misleading manner without referring to the person who had the baby as a woman. As someone who knows a couple trans people, it can be a kick in the stomach to have people continue to refer to you by the gender that you felt so uncomfortable being.

I'm happy for the entire family, but still think the media is portraying the situation as more of a medical miracle than it actually is.

I have no issues that she/he chooses to live his life as a man, more power to him. BUT for the medical/media world to get all hyped up that a man gave birth is false. If a person has a uterus than by medical definition it is a female. So a woman gave birth, not a man.
What I don't get though is if he truly wanted to live his life and forever be known as a man why keep the uterus?

I wondered this too at first, and since I have a good friend who's a trans man, I'll try to explain it as it's explained to me-

In many cases, it's most important to a trans person to be accepted for whom they feel they truly are. Thus, it's more common to have hormone therapies and top surgery than it is to have bottom surgery- because they're more important as far as being able to pass as the gender you feel is true.

Another issue is money- it's very hard to get insurance to cover the surgeries, so someone may live as a man while still having a uterus for a very long time before being able to afford the final surgery.

Lastly, surgeries for female to male transgendered people aren't as good as the ones that have been developed for male-to-female. Thus, the final result wouldn't fool anyone anyway. For some people, it doesn't matter how "natural" the results, it's important to them to have male genitalia. For others, they choose to not have the invasive surgery.

It's a human interest story, that's all. If you want to debate medical terminology, why not read a medical journal? This is People Magazine, this is what they do, sell stories.

For me, the incredible part is that even though some OBs denied them, and even though many OBs find ANY excuse to schedule surgery, s/he was able to have the baby in the normal, non-surgical way.

And that his partner has induced lactation, so that she can nurse the baby without having been pregnant! Very few people even think to do that, let alone are successfuly at it. :goodvibes

Those are the two miracles, especially the first one, in this country and this day and age of fear-based obstetrics and midwifery.

I do think that being in Oregon helped with the Birthing part; they have quite nice laws for normally birthing babies.
