Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend Training

Week 5 (4/3 - 4/9): 19 miles completed

MO: yoga/lifting
TU: 3-mile run
WE: 3-mile run
TH: lifting
FR: 4-mile run/yoga
SA: rest
SU: 9-mile run

First and foremost - THANK YOU all for the birthday wishes this past week! :love:You sure know how to make a gal feel special. :)

After a pretty great step-back week, it's time to up the mileage again! Also - IT'S BASEBALL TIME AGAIN!! :hyper: I think I've finally recovered from the heartbreak of the World Series... #RollTribe For my birthday (Tuesday), Mr. Ariel484 got me a Francisco Lindor shirt - and one for him! We can match at Tribe games! :love2: A+ gift. Our birthdays are about 1.5 weeks apart and we normally don't get one another gifts for holidays in favor of going out to a really nice dinner or traveling, but did exchange small gifts this year (I got him "The Lego Movie"!). So that was kind of fun.

Anyway...lifting continues to go well. I still don't particularly like doing it, but last week I made a conscious decision to make more of an effort to "lift heavy" to get maximum benefit out of my lifting sessions (if I'm putting in the time, I may as well push it a bit, right?). Turns out I may have been selling myself short over the past couple of weeks, because I've successfully bumped up almost all of my weights. :confused3 While it's not my favorite activity, it does make me feel good to see the numbers tick up...and I feel like I'm getting more out of it now, so I'm enjoying it a bit more. :)

Yoga has been going pretty well too. Monday's class was really awesome - it was a bit more challenging than usual (I was still sore 2 days later!), but I was able to hang and felt SO good when I was done. Same with Friday's class (though it wasn't quite as hard as Monday). I even did wheel pose for 10-15 seconds during both classes and didn't die. :thumbsup2
Yoga_UpwardFacingBow_01_300x350.jpg

It definitely did not look anywhere near this good, though. Still gotta work on this one! I was a gymnast when I was younger and it's sort of funny to think that I used to be able to do this pretty well/easily...because it's HARD! :faint:

Tuesday's run was pretty meh. I tried that same tempo-ish workout from last week and it didn't go super well...I'd say either equal to last week's effort or even a little worse? For the first time in awhile I thought about cutting a run short. Instead I took extra walk breaks and finished it up. The true victory from this run, I think, was my mental state afterward - I wished it had gone better but focused more on the fact that I wanted to quit, but didn't. Even a few months ago if this had happened I think I would have really been down on myself. :) If I try this workout again next week, I think I'll start out at a bit of a slower pace and see if that helps me.

Wednesday's run, on the other hand, was awesome! Best run I have had in a long time. I started with a longer run interval at a slower speed (7 minutes at 5.5MPH, about a 11:00/mile pace), then walked a minute...then took the run interval down 1 minute but upped the speed by 0.1 MPH (6 minutes at 5.6 MPH...whatever pace that is!)...then walked a minute, etc. until I was done. So by the end I was running faster, but for a shorter amount of time. This was one of those runs where it was challenging (I got up to 9:50/mile pace, which is ultimately what I'd like to get back to for race pace some day, but is still a major stretch for me right now), but I was able to complete it feeling really good! Haven't had one like that in a long time...it was SO encouraging and I was on a bit of a high afterward! :yay:

We had a freak snowstorm on Thursday night (?!) and temperatures in the 30s with 30MPH wind on Friday (but no snow on the ground, thankfully). I was like "NEWP" and stuck to the treadmill. Originally I was going to do 5 miles today but earlier in the week decided to cut it to 4 so my weekly mileage increase wouldn't be so crazy like it was a few weeks ago. Can't remember much about this one, except that I watched "Property Brothers" while running.

And then my long run on Sunday. I was pretty excited about this one, totally sure that it would be a ton better than the 8-miler from 2 weeks ago. In the end, it was better, but not much better! :confused3 Mr. A and I went out for dinner last night and apparently it SUPER didn't agree with me :faint: so that, plus the fact that this was the first time in a long time I was running in full sun (71 degrees out!), plus my back being a little stiff (I slept weird I guess?) made this one way tougher than I expected. I'm not sure if I'm trying to make excuses here or if I'm just looking to reassure myself...oh well. At least I didn't quit! And I wore my fun, new "denim" skirt, which I really liked.

33898749436_cbc84814be_z.jpg

My back felt totally fine within an hour, which is good and a little frustrating I guess (since it was bothering me during the run - is the universe trying to tell me I shouldn't run? :scratchin). I definitely think I need a break from longer distances once Tink is done. I sort of forgot how long it took me to built up to doing longer distances comfortably when I first started running, and I feel like with my recent lay-offs I'm sort of starting that process all over again. It's a little annoying but at least I finished this one! I also think I'm going to try 2/1 intervals for next week's long run. Today I started off with 3/1 intervals, which was maybe a little over-enthusiastic.

Overall, I think it was a good week. I still feel better than I did 2 weeks ago, and I'm getting more training in than I did for Princess. And I'm still well below sweeper pace. :) All good things!

Random aside: Tink toes! You can't really tell, but there's a gold glitter topcoat...aka Pixie Dust. :tinker: I put pics in a spoiler tag in case anyone here gets weirded out by feet (which...we're runners, so I would guess most don't, but you never know!).

As a power lifter, I have seen so many women, really drastically underestimate how much they can lift. I always say, with safe moves, aim weigh higher than you think you can, and drop down if you can't manage it. Rather than being satisfied with a lower weight.

Best run I have had in a long time.
Fantastic!!!

Totally think this is a sensible option!! Probably a good idea both mentally and physically!

Yeah, I do still have a slight fear that I'll move wrong and throw out my back or something, but overall I think I've been cheating myself a bit.
Fantastic!!!

I think so too. I could see running more days each week but sticking with the 3-6 mile range for awhile...like the rest of the year. And sticking with yoga/lifting it even upping my effort with both of those.

It's a little frustrating because most days up until about 5-6 miles it DOES feel good, like it stretches my back out...but then I go a little further and seem to hit my limit. :confused3

Hahahaha I love that you put your feet in a spoiler tag! I guess some people are weird about feet, but I'm not one of them thankfully. That polish is super cute!

And I do that same thing on treadmills, where I increase my speed and decrease the time, each interval. (But your treadmill speed is faster than mine :upsidedow) Anything i can do to make the mental slog not so unbearable on the treadmill is fine by me!

Sorry your long run didn't feel great. I do think those first few times you run in full sun is a hard adjustment. You're putting the miles in though, and that's what will take you nicely over the finish line for Tink! And yeah, you definitely deserve a break from the long runs for awhile!

I also play with speeds on the treadmill. Somehow it breaks up the monotony I think.

I'm loving that InB on you and I always love puppy sightings on your thread. So sweet

That Tink polish is so cute. Love it!

The temps on Sunday were like a reminder to me about "warm weather" running too. I feel you on the long distances. I like that I'm doing them and that my body so far is doing it, but I still love little 3-4 miles here and there too. And I don't think I can always 100% of the time be doing distance training. I'll need breaks in my year for sure.

Cute toes!! I bought some teapot jam berries a while back and might try them on my fingers (I don't like wearing them on toes). Tbd

Your rug is the pattern of my bathroom.

I really do not think I can just turn on the treadmill and go at a constant speed. I feel like increasing the speed/decreasing the time is a reward to myself for going faster and breaks up the monotony!!

Yeah, I realized this morning that I actually have a very light sunburn! I put sunscreen on but apparently didn't do a good job of getting it up right by my hairline, so I have this pink ring around my face (which looks awesome, as you can imagine). So I realized that 1. It really WAS very sunny out! and 2. My sunscreen works pretty well if I actually put it on all potentially exposed areas. Good to know!!
I also play with speeds on the treadmill. Somehow it breaks up the monotony I think.
I totally agree. I used to run at a constant speed and even got up to, like, 10 miles on a treadmill once...I don't know how I ever did that. That seems impossible now.
I'm loving that InB on you and I always love puppy sightings on your thread. So sweet
I think this thread needs more puppy pics!

Yeah, I was surprised at how different it felt with temperatures in the 70s! Somehow I didn't expect it to be that much harder?

I think you're on to something about "I don't think I can always 100% of the time be doing distance training. I'll need breaks in my year." :scratchin I feel like I need to focus on getting really strong at the 10K distance or something after Tink. I think my body and mind woudl appreciate the break!

Let me know how it goes! I have never used the Jamberries.

Yay for an awesome run on Wednesday!

Your LR outfit is adorable- I love it! Sorry your tummy was bothering you, but at least you looked great! ;)

Well done completing your run despite wanting to quit!!
s9bPVaK.gif

Your Wednesday run sounds great, I just love when a run goes well and it gives you a good confidence boost!

Your long run on Sunday sounds tough, sometimes the variables just don't align and it makes it tough but you got through it!

You must be near the peak of your training for Tink now right? Is it a step back next week and then your longest run the week after? This part of the training is always the hardest part, getting those longer runs in, I LOVE the feeling when you complete the longest run and you know it only gets better from there on out!

Love the toes!!

Also - IT'S BASEBALL TIME AGAIN!!

Yay baseball time! My favorite sports season of the year ... although the Yankees are already making me miserable. I should probably just focus on the hockey playoffs for the next few weeks and maybe by the time that's over the Yankees will have gotten their act together.

Sometimes it's hard to enjoy things, especially as you're getting used to them. Lifting doesn't seem like one of those things that's super fun for everyone. But I think that as you stick with it, you'll come to enjoy it more and more. That sense of satisfaction when you continue to up the weights and reach new levels will definitely be something awesome.

:thumbsup2

Yay for two good yoga classes! And wheel pose ... that thing looks painful.
Is there a yoga position where you curl up into a ball and nap for the entire class? Because that's the one I want to try.

Tuesday's run was pretty meh. I tried that same tempo-ish workout from last week and it didn't go super well...I'd say either equal to last week's effort or even a little worse? For the first time in awhile I thought about cutting a run short. Instead I took extra walk breaks and finished it up. Even a few months ago if this had happened I think I would have really been down on myself. :) If I try this workout again next week, I think I'll start out at a bit of a slower pace and see if that helps me.

Yay for pushing through and not quitting! That's awesome! Sometimes when a run starts badly it's just so hard to get through and finish ... but sticking with it is such a huge accomplishment and you should be very proud that you did it!
Haven't had one like that in a long time...it was SO encouraging and I was on a bit of a high afterward! :yay:

Awesome!!!
Also, that's a really cool way to increase the speed without completely overwhelming yourself. I may have to steal that for my next treadmill run (I usually up the speed every run interval, but I keep all my intervals the same length so I have to stay a little slower in order to not die ... but I could for sure do faster for a really short interval, so this could work for me).

Can't remember much about this one, except that I watched "Property Brothers" while running.

What?? Why is there snow in April?? The weather is seriously drunk this year.
Also, did you know that there's a third property brother? I just learned this recently. I've never watched Property Brothers, so I don't even know the two brothers, but I was fascinated to learn that there's a third one. Why is he not on the show?

And then my long run on Sunday. I was pretty excited about this one, totally sure that it would be a ton better than the 8-miler from 2 weeks ago. Okay. Time for one of my not-quite-patented not-quite-pep talks.
I think it's difficult to know when you can try to pick up somewhat close to where you were before a break and when you have to basically start from scratch again. I think it's awesome that you went from being injured to Dopey in about a year. That really shows a huge amount of mental and physical strength, to know shortly after you start to come back that you believe that you can get back to where you were before. But sometimes what you want and what you believe isn't what's best for your body. Can you still do half marathons and Dopey and all that? Maybe. Is it what's best for you? Apparently not. I think some time at the shorter distance will be a really good thing. It'll give you a chance to have more of those precious pain-free runs. And I think you'll know when you're ready to start moving back to the longer distances.
If I may use myself as an example for a moment ... shortly after I started running, when I expressed that I might one day be interested in half marathons, people were pushing me to start getting ready to do one ASAP. People are still, to this day, trying to push me to do a marathon. But I have a history of joint issues (and when I ignore that I'm in a lot of pain for the rest of the day, i.e. yesterday), and I knew that I had to take it slow. But I also knew when I was ready to move to the next level. I knew when I was ready to add distance and run my first half. I even discovered that I could be physically ready to move up to the marathon distance (although that's still not gonna happen for the foreseeable future).
You have to trust yourself. Listen to your body, it knows what it's doing.

On an unrelated note ... I noticed that this week's InB Monday Montage on Instagram now features 100% more Archie!

I've noticed the same thing with my long runs recently, that it just seems so much harder to bounce back and I feel like I'm in the worst shape of my running career! I have plenty of excuses though, like drinking too much beer and only running 2 days per week.

Also, Happy Belated Birthday!

Yay for an awesome run on Wednesday!

Your LR outfit is adorable- I love it! Sorry your tummy was bothering you, but at least you looked great! ;)
Thanks! I love it too! :) Having a fun outfit helps ::yes::
Well done completing your run despite wanting to quit!!

Some days, I just take my victories where I can get them. ::yes::
Your Wednesday run sounds great, I just love when a run goes well and it gives you a good confidence boost!
Me too! I really need runs like that.
Your long run on Sunday sounds tough, sometimes the variables just don't align and it makes it tough but you got through it!
It was, but I'm glad I did it!

This part of the training is always the hardest part, getting those longer runs in, I LOVE the feeling when you complete the longest run and you know it only gets better from there on out!
Yeah, so...this is the plan I have been using: http://halhigdon.com/training/51312/Half-Marathon-Novice-2-Training-Program

Right now, I am at the max distance for my 2 shorter runs (3 miles). I'm going to max out my Friday mid-distance run at 5 or 6 miles (not sure which yet).

For the long run, I am hoping to make out at 12 miles the weekend before Tink...
- so I have a 10-miler this weekend
- step back to a 10K the weekend after
- then an 11-miler
- and then the 12-miler

Part of me just wants to call it good at a 10-mile long run, but like you said, I know I would feel awesome if I successfully got the 12-miler in. I'm hoping that doing a shorter run interval and keeping the 1-minute walk breaks will help me this weekend.
Love the toes!!
Thanks! :tinker:
Yay baseball time! My favorite sports season of the year ... although the Yankees are already making me miserable. I should probably just focus on the hockey playoffs for the next few weeks and maybe by the time that's over the Yankees will have gotten their act together.
yes!! :yay:

Honestly, it's been a roller coaster for us already. We started out sweeping Texas and then BAM! We get swept by Arizona??! :confused3 So I can relate - we had one fun series and then one where I could barely stand to watch. Oh, baseball...
Sometimes it's hard to enjoy things, especially as you're getting used to them. Lifting doesn't seem like one of those things that's super fun for everyone. Yeah, and I know that it's good for me and it's good for my running...so I just do it anyway!
Yay for two good yoga classes! And wheel pose ... that thing looks painful.
Is there a yoga position where you curl up into a ball and nap for the entire class? Because that's the one I want to try.
Savasana! you don't quite curl up in a ball though. But I think you could totally rock this one:

Yay for pushing through and not quitting! That's awesome! Sometimes when a run starts badly it's just so hard to get through and finish ... but sticking with it is such a huge accomplishment and you should be very proud that you did it!
I am! Goooo me!:cheer2:
Awesome!!!

Steal away! I just did that same workout this morning and it went well again. It's challenging, but satisfying!
What?? Why is there snow in April?? The weather is seriously drunk this year.
I don't knoooooow. I hope that was really the last hurrah!
Also, did you know that there's a third property brother? I just learned this recently. I've never watched Property Brothers, so I don't even know the two brothers, but I was fascinated to learn that there's a third one. Why is he not on the show?
I did!! I wonder if he feels left out because he's not a twin (the two main brothers are twins)? And because he isn't on all of their shows? I have definitely seen him on one of the shows, where they were renovating a family member's (or was it family friend)? home. But yeah, on the other 2-3 Property Brothers shows, he doesn't make an appearance.
That first run in the warmer weather is always a tough one. It's like ... I finally got used to the cold, what is the weather doing to me??? But at least you made it through and you looked super cute!!
Yeah, I totally forgot that the weather makes a difference. But now that I'm thinking back on it, surely that had an effect. :scratchin
Okay. Time for one of my not-quite-patented not-quite-pep talks.

I totally think you're right. I definitely wonder how things would be if I didn't have the Princess and Tink deferrals to use this year (which - totally grateful that I was able to defer those races). Like maybe I would have still done Wine & Dine and Dopey/Dopey-ish and that would have been enough for me?

But the part of your replay that I bolded is something that I think has taken me a bit to realize (really I think the 8-miler a couple of weeks ago was the wake-up call). I thought that the long runs I did during Dopey training were so hard/painful because I was stupid about not doing my PT stuff for a few months. But I have been really good about PT since Thanksgiving/early December and I am STILL feeling this pain when I do the long runs...where I can do runs in the 3-6 mile range and those feel really good (i.e. I did 3 miles this morning where my back started off stiff, but felt WAY better at the end).
If I may use myself as an example for a moment ... shortly after I started running, when I expressed that I might one day be interested in half marathons, people were pushing me to start getting ready to do one ASAP. People are still, to this day, trying to push me to do a marathon. I was thinking about what I was to do after Tink this past weekend...I think once that weekend is behind me I am going to slow wayyyy down and cut back the distances for awhile. But I don't think I want to give up distance running altogether.

I think my ultimate goal will be the 30th WDW Marathon (after I was all "wahhhh no more marathons!") - so that's, like, 2023 or whatever. So maybe take 1-1.5 years to get up to 10K...then 1-1.5 years up to 10 miles...then 1-1.5 years up to half marathons. Or whatever. Hopefully that will cure the creaky back!
On an unrelated note ... I noticed that this week's InB Monday Montage on Instagram now features 100% more Archie!
:love::love: That makes the Monday Montage 100% more awesome!!

YES - that's totally how I feel during the long runs. It's weird because I have shorter runs where I feel awesome, like I could some day be back to where I was a few years ago when I was healthier, stronger and faster. :confused3 I'm starting to realize that I probably CAN get back there, but I need to take things a lot slower. Lots of thinking about this lately!!
Also, Happy Belated Birthday!
Thank you! :yay:
Looks like another successful week with lifting, yoga and running!

Love the toes!
Yep, I made it through and I'm feeling okay, so no complaints! :)

Savasana is absolutely the best pose in yoga!! Chris actually HAS fallen asleep during it on our yoga workouts. It's hilarious! I'm like, "How can you fall asleep that quickly?"

And, so smart of you to really think about pulling back on distances and truly giving your body a chance to fully heal. I admit that I'm sorry you won't be running marathon weekend this year since I was hoping to see you at a meet-up there.

Maybe you could just plan a vacation at that time and visit. :D

Savasana is absolutely the best pose in yoga!! Chris actually HAS fallen asleep during it on our yoga workouts. It's hilarious! I'm like, "How can you fall asleep that quickly?"
There is a lunchtime yoga class where I work that I used to go to, and when I first started my job we leaved in a different city and I had a 1 hour+ commute...and that was with me leaving early to beat rush-hour traffic. And whenever I went to this lunchtime yoga class, without fail I would fall asleep in savasana! I still do sometimes. :teeth: So I get it!!

It seems like the obvious solution with the way things have been doing over the past few months. I'm hopeful that the shorter intervals will help me this weekend but at the same time, I'm a little extra nervous for my remaining long runs since I can't seem to complete one without having back pain. :confused3 On the other hand, it does make me excited to cut back my mileage, because maybe I'll have, like, an entire week of pain-free runs! :cool1: Wouldn't that be something!!

I guess we'll just have to meet up in Disneyland in 1 month and 2 days... ;)

:scratchin A non-running trip to Disney? Whaaaat??
