A Mermaid & Shark in the Pools?!?!- A Combined DLR and Villas at GCH Trip Report

It was my first post! :)
We visit Disneyland a couple of times a year. We usually staying at PPH because we love the Upper Theme Park view, and we have always talked about adding days so we could rent a cabana and relax by the pool! Do you happen to know if you can rent a cabana if you are staying at PPH, or do you need to stay at GCH or DH?
Thanks so much for the information!
I am looking forward to the rest of your report!

To be honest, I'm not sure about the answer to that. :confused3

I think the best thing would be to ask Guest Services directly at DLH or GCH. Would love to know the answer to that myself. Good luck! Here's to hoping you get pixie dust on that one! :wizard:

I did a little searching on the DIS last night. Someone mentioned on another thread that it is a 60 day booking window. I still recommend just calling the hotel directly. :beach:

I think you are right! And thanks again for all the information.
And I am so glad you decided to write this TR, I was so excited to finally get to read a report about the cabanas, etc. ;)

Loving everything! Thank you so much for sharing. :goodvibes Love your D&B purse too :thumbsup2

Thank you for sticking around! :flower3:

I really LOVE my Dooney & Bourke purse also! I used it last time we were at Disneyland. I used it throughout the rest of our vacation there as well.

I found your recent TR. Will read up on it soon! :thumbsup2

Apparently, Princess Ariel and Prince Eric are upset at me. They're jealous that I didn't post enough pictures of them. They really are such hams!!! At their requests, here are the photos:

Upon check-in our 1 bedroom villa:

On the balcony chair:

On the window sill between the master bath jetted tub and the master bedroom:

Checking out the master bath shower bench:

Can you believe they had the nerve to eat some of our beignets?!?!?

Even DD tried to sneak in the photo!!! :hyper:

Here was our UNPRETTY view when we were in the studio villa on the first floor.

Up next...Day Six of Six

Friday, July 11, 2014

I suppose all good things must eventually come to an end! :sad2: We were having such a wonderful vacation. We knew that we would really take advantage of being onsite as much as possible.

I had set my alarm, but when I woke up I realized that I went back to sleep!!! I think I overslept by at least 40 minutes!!! :scared: Again, we rushed getting all 4 of us ready. We finished packing as were getting ready and we put the luggage by the entry door. We only brought my large purse w/the character autograph books and sharpie pen for signatures and the large camera. DH went to the registration desk for laundry tokens (shhhh!!! We redeemed the tokens for laundry detergent that we will use for our vacations next year).

I took the kids with me to our surprise character breakfast. DD kept asking, “Where are we going?” We walked into Storyteller’s Café for the Chip and Dale character breakfast. The kids were so excited. It was hard to get DD to eat because she kept looking for the characters. The food was so good and the egg station was a hit. Not only can you get omelets, but you can get huevos rancheros and fried eggs. The kids got their 1st fried eggs on property. You could tell the eggs were so fresh. Our main server Daniel was so nice and attentive.

Sorry, but I didn't have the forethought to take photos of the food. We were so focused on the character interactions and photo-taking.

You can see in this photo that I'm still red and inflammed by the allergic reaction I got from DH's sunblock days earlier.

DD eagerly waiting for an autograph and a photo.

Here is the "Mommy, I don't want to take a picture" face:

Here’s my overview of this character breakfast: the food items and selection are good, pastry selection rocked, the fresh fruit selection was great, and the egg bar was yummy! DH and I also had omelets. The only truly recognizable characters are Chip and Dale and Meeko (the raccoon from Pocahontas). The young and adult bears from Brother Bear (?) were there, also. The characters interacted so well with everyone. They were so cute and funny. The brother bears were playing games with DD.

I checked out of the studio at registration. DH and the kids rushed back to the studio to have potty breaks and change into our swimsuits. I called Bell Services to pick up the luggage for storage. It was going to be a 25 minute wait! Yikes…I should have called earlier! DH stayed behind for bell services.

I took the kids with me to the Mariposa Pool. We decided that this was our favorite pool because it was the quietest of the 3. DH watched the kids while I went back to the hotel lobby store to return the swim shorts I bought for DH the other day. I found the Dooney & Bourke retro Disneyland barrel purse as a 40th birthday present for one of my best friends.

When I went back, we ordered a lava smoothie for the kids to share. DH ordered a regular iced tea and I ordered my favorite drink the Banana Cabana. Yummy! They played in the water and later DS fell asleep on the chaise lounge chair. Again, for quite a long time. He’s like mommy and daddy…likes to play a little in the water, but then loves to chill on the chair.

Later we played in the water for the last time w/DD. While DD and I were in the middle of the pool, I held her in my arms and told her to take in the moment. “What does that mean, mommy?” “Well, even though we have passes and can come to Disneyland and walk through the hotel, we may not stay at this hotel for another 2 to 3 years. Enjoy the moment. Look at how beautiful this hotel is. Notice how wonderful it feels to be in the pool.” DH took a beautiful panoramic picture. I slowly spun her around a few times to look around.

DH changed in the restroom. DD and I took showers in the women’s restroom shower stall then changed. We went back and DS finally woke up. It’s like he knew it was time to get up.

We packed up and had dinner at White Water Snacks. DD had the pizza and DS had the chicken tenders w/French fries w/ranch for dipping. DH had a Caesar salad and I had the steak nachos. It’s official…this is one of my favorite on-property restaurant foods.

We slowly walked back to the lobby and had one last family look at the gift shop. We took one LAST photo of the interior door before exiting to the valet. I love the beautiful stained glass doors.

DH went to retrieve the car from self-parking across the street. I went to bell services to get our luggage back and we waited in the valet area. Everything was packed into the car and sadly we were on our way home.

DD fell asleep in the car and DS had that nap earlier. Boy! He would NOT stop talking! We was just blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! It was so cute!:hippie:

About 30 minutes later, DH pulled into the garage and we unloaded everything back into the house.

I don’t know if you remember, but we were having an ANT problem and I wanted DH to check it out first. DS stayed outside with me and DD was still sleeping in the car. OMG!!! There were ants running from the master bathroom and into the hallway!!!! :scared1:  :scared:

Poor DH had to vacuum them up, spray the areas, rearrange the furniture to get to them, & return the furniture. What a nightmare! This trend continued for the next two days. Ants here, ants there! Finally stopped (knock on wood!). Ugh…I hate ants. So gross!

Up next...positives and negatives of our trip!!!

OMG - I have missed so much... Sorry I have not been stay current. The only excuse I have is Midori started school August 11st and it has been very busy..

Your family is so so, so cute, funny and happy. also we can not leave out Ariel & Eric. One big happy family.

You guys were very busy, love the pictures and your detailed daily events.

Your cabana were really neat..Tell your family hello from Midori & Bob

Luvin the Dooney!
Boo to last day of vaction coming up!
OMG luvin the Storytellers pics. I wanna do that just for the Brother Bear characters (Kenai and Koda ;) )

When are you going and for how long? Are you sticking to the parks or are you doing anything else? Where are you staying? Wow... you must be soooo excited!

I'm going in November. Just my momma and moi. We're staying offsite in Castle Inn and Suites. The reviews on that hotel aren't great but the pictures of it look cool so don't really know what to expect?! :confused3
We are there on the ground for 9 days. Have 5 park days and 4 see other stuff days! :) My ptr report is linked in my siggy below if you want to join in :) I can't wait though. We've been to Paris 3 times and WDW 5 times but never been to California. I think i'll probably cry when I get there with it's history and the fact it's the only park Walt ever saw! :goodvibes

Awwww, Bob!!! Thank you so much for the kind words! :flower3:

I had such a fun time doing my very first TR! I totally get why people do them...it's so fun to relive your vacation, share the experiences with others, read what other posters have to say, and even answer questions. Soooo fun!!!

Hope Midori is all settled now with school! Take care and thank you again! :hippie:

I feel conflicted...I want to share my last post yet I want to delay a little. Putting the trip to a close is pretty sad. :sad1: Awww, forget it! I'll just post it...another post to follow! :yay:

DD looks so truly happy in her pictures with Kenai and Koda. I have to admit that we haven't seen Brother Bear so we didn't know their names. When I asked the hostess their names, she must have repeated them 3-4 times and I still couldn't remember. Ugh! DD had such fun interactions with them. They were playing games with her. They can't sign the autograph books but they will gladly pose for pictures.

How wonderful that you and your mother are going on a duo trip. Sounds like you will be doing a LOT. I will definitely look up your TR. :thumbsup2

That must have been SO amazingly awesome to go to DL Paris! OMG!!! We haven't done WDW yet. I love that DLP is so close to DCA and you can just walk across in literally a couple minutes! WDW is so intimidating to me. Someday! princess:

OVERALL REVIEW OF TRIP

FAVORITES/POSITIVES:

Here is a summary of my faves, must do’s, and best memories of our trip (not in any particular order):

1) ONE BEDROOM VILLA: Cannot say enough of how much we LOVED having that huge villa: so spacious, homey, and luxurious. Better than my own home! :lovestruc

2) CABANAS: I completely understand now wanting to have that cabana. Wow! That was awesome! We did full days at GCH and DLH. If money is ok, we are TOTALLY doing this again in the future! :woohoo:

3) Surf’s Up Breakfast with Mickey and Friends in PPH: We did this on Day Three. What fun interactions we had! These were some of our favorite memories. We thought the food was pretty good, too.

4) Having the Paradise Pier view was awesome! Every time we entered the villa, I opened the curtains wide open. Every morning I re-opened the drapes and opened the balcony slider. I LOVED hearing the sounds of DCA, even if it meant hearing the tests the CM’s were doing in preparation of the park’s opening. So soothing and made me very happy! :cloud9:

5) Chip and Dale Character Breakfast at Storyteller’s Café at GCH: We did this on our last day Day Six before checkout. We really liked the buffet. Our server Daniel was one of our best servers during our entire trip. I was worried that the kids would only recognize Chip, Dale, and Meeko the raccoon from Pocahontas. They had a blast with everyone. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to meet Meeko. :sad2:

6) Bell Services: We used Bell Services during check-in to store luggage until the villa was ready, to receive our grocery delivery, to deliver to the villa, upon checkout from the 1 bedroom and store until the studio villa was ready, to deliver to the studio, and to store after checkout until we were ready to go home. We had such positive experiences with everyone. Soooo nice!
ON A SIDE NOTE: We had an Amazon.com overnight delivery ordered our first day to receive the 2nd day. I got into detail about it earlier. I was so impressed about how the manager helped me and handled the situation. ;)

7) DCA entrance through GCH: Loved this!!! We did NOT step foot once at Disneyland Park. The focus of our trip was to relax, to shop, and spend a LOT of time in the pools. Then, if we had time, we would go to the DCA. So convenient. :cool2:

8) Proximity to DTD: Loved not sitting in a car for six days!!! We always ate in the room, in the hotel/pool, or in DTD. We actually tried Tortilla Joe’s and Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen for the first time. LOVED their food. We actually went to Tortilla Joe’s two times. We would have repeated Ralph Brennan’s, but they’re so expensive.

9) Favorite CM interaction/experience: When we had our GCH full day cabana, our initial cabana host/attendant was Jonathan. We were so impressed with him. He was so sincere and genuine, accommodating, & checked on us frequently enough but not impose himself. We saw him 3 days later when we had the full day DLH cabana. This time he was a lifeguard & he recognized me! The next day he was training another lifeguard & he remembered us again! We had quite a few nice conversations with him. Such a sweet young man! :goodvibes

10) We loved the Mariposa Pool at the GCH (it was quieter than the Fountain Pool and Redwood Pool. Actually this is where the 4 GCH cabanas are located. This pool was also closest to the DVC tower and the lobby.

NEGATIVES/REGRETS/BAD EXPERIENCES:

This is a list that is not in any particular order.

1) I made multiple requests at different points to hopefully ensure the view I wanted (Paradise Pier in order to have the World of Color View). I made the requests with specific villa numbers with DVC Member Services, when I called GCH 1 ½ weeks prior to the trip, & upon check-in. Based on when people were checking out, the highest view we got in the 1 bedroom villa was floor 3. I had requested floor 6, 5, & 4.
With the studio villa, we got floor ONE!!! Ugh!!! Saw close to nothing, but at least we could hear the sounds of DCA. Because of our location, hardly anyone could see us if we were getting dressed near the bathroom.

I know requests are NOT a guarantee, but these were a letdown for me. :headache:

2) The following is a biggie for me, too: This was our 1st time using points to stay at DVC and I was looking forward to using the kitchen. Because of our crazy schedule, I was only able to cook a few times. One dinner was linguini with clams. On our last day, I planned to cook a full breakfast (bacon, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, pancakes). I had coffee for DH & I and I also had OJ for the 4 of us. The cookware was SOOOOOO CHEAP…they were a set of cheap version of stainless steel cookware (a small pot, a small/medium frying pan, a medium sized saute pan). It was soooo hard to boil the pasta. I couldn’t believe they did NOT have one piece of non-stick cookware. I really didn’t think this should be acceptable for Disney Vacation Club. (I still have the comment cards for cabanas at GCH & DLH and I also plan on doing the DVC survey).

I had called Guest Services and they checked with Mousekeeping. They did confirm that they do not have any other options. I could NOT do the fried eggs and the pancakes were mediocre at best. I used the cookie sheet on low to low-medium heat. I had thrown out half of the pancakes. Note to self: Next time I’m bringing two non-stick saute pans and one larger stock pot. If I had to fly to a DVC resort, I wouldn’t be able to do this.

3) Hmmmm…I’m supposed to think of other things to complain about and things I didn’t like. Hmmm…hold on. Give me a minute. Wait…there was that one time where…Nope. Sorry! We had such an awesome time! It was hard getting back to the real world of work. Now we have to earn enough money to afford our Disney Cruise Line vacations next May and next October! Hurray for no airfare and just driving down to San Diego! :car:party:

Our family LOVES, lives, and breathes Disney!!! DLR annual passholders, Disney Vacation Club members, and addicted to Disney Cruise Line. I LOVE my DISboards and love reading about everyone else’s experiences. I am such the planner when it comes to vacations. I’ve gotten my May and October cruises booked since their opening days (best prices). I’m even contemplating about what to do about 2016. Hmmm…DVC member cruise or Aulani? What kills me is the idea of paying for airfare, the cost of food in Hawaii, & car rental costs in Hawaii!

Oh, but to dream, to plan, and to hope! Time will tell and I can’t wait!
Thank you so much for joining me on my 1st journey as a Trip Reporter! It was fun sharing our experiences with you and hope you enjoyed the pictures as well! :love1::disrocks:

Thoughts and comments are welcome! :thumbsup2:thanks:

PROOF THAT TR'S ARE FUN:

I had so much fun doing this TR that I have impulsively decided I will start a TR for my birthday in October. I am taking the day off for Friday, October 24th. Most likely it will just be DH and I. I don't want a lot of people to come and my two best friends and their DH's will be out of town for business and vacation. Our kids will be in school and we will be there for rope drop and stay until maybe 4pm. It will be an adult day where we don't have to have our activities revolve around children's menus & height restrictions.

I will post the new thread at a later date!!! Stay tuned! :happytv::surfweb:

Pictures with them are better than nothing. I've never seen them before in the parks.

How wonderful that you and your mother are going on a duo trip. Sounds like you will be doing a LOT. I will definitely look up your TR. :thumbsup2
Yeah I can't sit still on holidays. Momma would happily sit by the pool or in the hotel room reading all day but after half an hour at the pool I want to leave. I start thinking of all the things I'm not seeing and get over anxious :lmao:

We were in Paris 3 times. Paris is like Disneyland as in the parks and DTD are so close to each other. The first two years we were there with a group of dancers, the last year we went just the two of us and noticed alot more the rudeness of the people in that park. It drained the magic. I have the old trip reports on my blog (also linked below) if you want to look it up. Tonnes of pictures and that :goodvibes

WDW I love. That's my home. Magic Kingdom I walk in and any problems I have melt away and are forgetten while i'm in that bubble. Yeah WDW is massive but it's worth doing.

Great TR!!! Loved it =) Bday trip sounds fun! We might be there that day for the MHP. We aren't sure yet if we are going still. We will see!

How wonderful to have a Birthday Trip to look forward to!

I so enjoyed your trip report---I think you did a fantastic job! I really liked how you posted some really informative pics of the Cabanas, the pool area, the maps of how the Cabanas are situated, and the menus---really helpful!

Your pink D&B purse is adorable! You got in some nice shopping;)!

I loved the pics of your children with the statue in the DLH(with your DD holding the hands)---so cute, and the one of your DS sleeping in the Cabana---precious!

I absolutely love that you took the time for a "teaching moment" with your DD---talking with her about "taking it in", and explaining to her what that means---SO important, and so easy not to do, when you are at a place where time rushes by, and you are busy trying to cram in as much as possible! What a great Mom!:thumbsup2

I can't wait to hear about your October day trip!(Will you be bringing Eric and Ariel, as well?????)

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us! :)

You were so incredibly sweet and eloquent about your comments. I sincerely appreciate your extremely kind thoughts.

I didn't find a lot of information about certain things on our trip (GCH & DLH cabanas, certain character breakfasts, restaurants & shopping in DTD, etc.). Therefore, it was very important to me to get that information out there.

As you were able to tell by my TR, shopping is a true weakness of mine! I do LOVE my purse.

I feel lucky that we are able to provide these experiences to our children. We feel they have NO IDEA how lucky and fortunate they are. I think DD truly understood my message. I reminded her that we most likely won't be able to do a vacation at VGC again for another 2-3 years (most likely 3 years). Since last month's vacation, she (without any prompts) will say how much she misses our vacation! The panoramic photo is another one of my TRUE favorites from that vacation.

And, as for the October day trip, Ariel and Eric WILL be coming! It was fun including them in our activities!
