Professor Minerva McGonagall Head of Gryffindor House and professor of Spells and charms at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry passed away today. She is known by many in the Muggle world by her alias Dame Maggie Smith.

More significantly, Mike, she had a long career on stage, tv, and film with parts in 'Death on the Nile' (Christie), the Sister Act movies (Whoopie), California Suite (Simon), and most recently, 'Downton Abbey'.

I often saw her in other British comedies on PBS and she was a great actress.

Sorry Jim. We had an antenna attached to the chimney. The remote control didn't come till 1980. Happily I was the oldest and had younger siblings to do the hard work.
Our mornings started with Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans and a 1940's cartoon with cats and mice (Not Tom and Jerry) with the Bahn Frei Polka playing as the back round sound track . Personal side note approximately 80% of my life ago , that same music heralded the Jean Shepherd radio show for me.

Pete Rose passed today at 83 years old. The greatest hitter MLB has and will ever know.

I missed the fact in the hub-bub of the last few weeks that the great Cleveland Indians pitcher Luis Tiant passed away this month (October 2024).

He played for the Tribe for the first 6 years of his MLB career in the late 1960s before moving on to other teams and found his most notoriety with the Boston Red Sox during the 1970s. He was unique for his pitching delivery where on a full wind up, he would turn his back to the batter and pause ever so slightly, then throw to home.

Like a lot of Cleveland's players, the good young ones were bound to the team for their first few contract years but due to free agency, often left for more lucrative markets (The Tribe's history is full of those examples) when they could.

Hope he can make it into the Hall of Fame some time. He's missed out the last few times he was eligible but I read that in a few years he may be eligible again via an Old Timer's Committee.
