A Girl Just Put on Deodorant in my Classroom

As far as I know, there are two Disneyjunkies on the DIS.

Robin grew up in Brooklyn, but she and her son moved to GA years ago. (but she's still a Brooklyn girl at heart)

Grew up in Brooklyn. Attended college and lived in NC for several years. Moved backed to Brooklyn about 11 years ago. I also have a son.

Oh wait, there is another Robin, but she has a daughter. I think she is from WI.

Your name is Robin too? Then we have 3 Robins??

That would be correct. We are not permitted to have our cell phones in our hands or in our pockets. I cannot make any personal phone calls on the company phones as they are strictly monitored...the only way to get an outside line is through personnel and they ask who we are calling and what the business purpose is.

There is ZERO internet access in our location...a department store. We are there to take care of our customers, not our personal lives. Food and drink is not permitted on the sales floor, only in our break room and as long as we have clocked out for our lunch or dinner break.

When we clock in we must do our work. ANY personal business must be taken care of after we clock out for the day.

You mean your employer expects you to actually...WORK! Gasp!!!

Sorry, I assume everyone here is a woman if I'm not familiar with their posts.

I can picture it now a customer comes in looking for a red dress for an upcoming event and asks for your help. You go about your work, finding her many options to choose from. She asks for your opinion on which you would wear and your response would be "I'm sorry I'm not allowed to answer that until I punch out a 5:00, thats personal business and it is in no way permitted here while I work. I can give you only facts about your garment, but under no circumstances may I give you any of my personal opinions. If you would like me to share that with you, meet me in the parking lot at 5:15" Of course the woman thinks your a psycho and decides her pretty red dress is not worth what could happen in that parking lot. She puts the dresses on the counter and quickly hightails it out of the store and you lose the sale. Looking back, its really too bad your store has such a stringent no personal business on company time policy, they could have had a $100 sale and you could have gotten your 5% commission.

Joking aside, I don't buy it when someone claims they have never done anything personal on business time.

:sad2:

I think interacting with customers IS part of her position.

Now I'm lost.:confused::confused::confused:

I thought we were talking about posters name Disneyjunkie and some were thinking Robin was a DJ.:rotfl::lmao:\

Oh, my name isn't Robin.

Oh, when you said "there is another Robin" I thought you were one of them :lmao::lmao:

My name is Judy, what's yours? :rotfl2:

Wow, this *WAS* a fun thread :sad2:

I'm a teacher and I Dis almost everyday right at my desk, either at lunch time, when the kids are in music, gym, whatever.

And the deodorant thing, I would have ignored it, unless it was an every day thing. She may have smelled herself and panicked, so I would have just let her be.

What is next? Shaving her pits in class? I don't get it. Soem kids have no shame.

After 17 years teaching in a very inner-city school, this is not surprising at all to me. Quite tame actually.

I've only taught four months in an inner city school and that is tame for me... now I've seen what weaves are/are not like (and the tumble weave), nails, and dare I even say other things..

Deoderant, not a huge deal.

That ruined the thread? Geez, maybe you should lighten up and get that stick out of

the mud  I hope that ruined it for you even more :rolleyes1

But once again, things like this are the "norm" because people don't say, hey do that someplace else. Home training and class have gone out the window.

The other day at the mall-which I hardly ever go to even as a teen it wasn't my thing really. There was almost 30 year old walking around with a t shirt: it had a pile of cartoon poop on it with a roll of tissue paper next to it. and it read" forever friends". And he was alone, I wonder why?

If you are a teacher, you might want to check your spelling. :)

Of course I would offer up my opinion. That's part of helping the customer, not personal business...which is precisely what is in my job description. We are permitted to spend time with our customers and assist them in any way.

You're certainly entitled to your belief that everyone does SOME personal business on company time. I don't...because getting caught at it is grounds for write-up which can lead to termination and I'm not willing to risk my job for that.

Amazing, isn't it? I actually have the attitude that if my employer is going to pay me for a day of work I OWE them an honest and full day, something a lot of folks don't necessarily believe in.

I don't see it as a big deal. However, I do find that you posting about it from the classroom rather disturbing. Aren't you supposed to be teaching?:confused3

its not a big deal - and if teachers are spending time 1) being shocked about this and 2) taking class time to post about this on the internet while in the classroom, thats whats wrong with our school system! lol:rotfl:
i would say that its pretty tame, i would have been more worried if it was something where she was exposing herself, you know?
