A Girl Just Put on Deodorant in my Classroom

Teachers have preps and breaks! They don't sleep on a cot in their classroom. Are your kids doing homework 100% of the time? Not trying to be rude but seriously She can do whatever she wants in her classroom with her free time. Teachers don't teach from 730 to 230 straight.:rolleyes1

As for op- I would rather her quickly put deodorant on than to stink to high heaven. At least she cares enough not to smell in public. I carry a stick in the car for when I forget in the am.

Unless you are in my school district, they will usually find something for you to do during your planning. Ok I am done ranting.

Maybe the kid did this before they left the room and now the kids are gone.

I have seen it happen a number of times, I can think of about 3 different ones who do it regularly. At first I was a bit surprised, but I am guessing it is now acceptable. I've also seen them using those Wisp toothbrush things.

I LOVE those wisp toothbrush things :)

I think putting on deodorant (no matter how icky it is) is so much better than having to smell B.O. If she's wearing a sweatshirt, not much will be seen anyway.

She could have asked to go to the bathroom to apply the deodorant, or maybe stop by the bathroom during a break.

How about putting on deodorant before you leave your house in the morning? If you've just had pe, you have 2 seconds to out it on while dressing.

With the attitudes shown on the thread though I guess we shouldn't be surprised. Really? People don't have a problem with someone putting on deodorant during class? You know darn well there are kids with attitudes who will do anything to get attention. I guess if someone pulls out a big old can of feminine spray during class and decides to freshen up, it's better than stinking.

Why wouldn't you just apply prior to leaving home? I did that in HS and still do to this day. If she was running late, she could have done it in the car or on the bus prior to school. That wouldn't have been appropriate behavior when I was in school.

I am trying to be outraged, really I am, but somehow I can't summon up enough emotion to care even one little bit. Sorry but if this is the worst thing you see in your classroom, OP, consider yourself very lucky.

Kids forget stuff all the time. Forget to brush their teeth, put on deodorant etc. heck I even forgot to put on my underwear once in my Sophomore year. Maybe she keeps the deodorant on her normally, or maybe she plays sports and has it on hand for that.

Either way, much better than her being smelly all day. I agree, it's FUNNY. But rude, weird, etc? Eh no.

If she had students in her classroom, as this was happening (which her post indicate) then it wasn't "free time". Unless it was to update a teacher page with homework and other information, I have a problem with a teacher posting on the internet during class time.

Especially if using school resources to do it (though she may have been posting from her personal web-enabled phone which actually may be worse...kids aren't supposed to be doing that in a classroom, why should a teacher?)

Maybe the OP was using the bathroom when she posted
Maybe she had 3 minutes after class before her next class came in. Maybe she gets a break now. Maybe she is at lunch. Maybe she is done for the day. Just because she posted from school doesn't mean she is in the middle of class :confused3

After thinking about this for a bit, maybe some of the PP's are right. It is very obvious that this girl has no manners, or respect for those around her. I imagine she will grow up to complain about her in-laws, wear her pajamas to run to the store, use a "sick" day when she's not sick, you know, ALL of those horrible things people do. ;)

Maybe one day she'll forget the words to the Star Spangled Banner. :scared1:

All because of that fateful day she decided to put deodorant on in the classroom. :sad2:

She posted at 8:02am Eastern time and said it 'just' happened. Hardly lunch or the end of the day. Unless she teaches at a school that has classes starting around 7am I'd say she was in a class if there were students present.

do you rub your nose or sneeze into hands then shake someone hands or touch a door know. this p.c. stuff has to stop. what's the problem. maybe she came from gym and forgot to put it on. are we all looking for something to complain about now a days.

I agree with the OP. Personal grooming in public is inappropriate. The student should have taken care of this before getting to class.

We start at 7:15. It could have happened in homeroom and she had 1st period off. I am at lunch right now, at 10:25. Our schools have odd schedules because they share busses. We start early becuase the busses drop off high school and go back for elem.

After 27 years.
Pulled it out of her bag, reached up under her sweatshirt and applied it. And acted shocked that I was shocked.
Well excuse me.

if you are a teacher what are you doing on the internet. you should be doing your job. i worked in the private sector for 32 years and sat behind a desk and a computer...if you were caught on the internet doing the work day ...you were suspended. what are you doing. i guess i'm shocked because your not doing your job.

Yep...at 8:02am, I would expect a teacher to be teaching, not surfin' the net on the computer or their phone.

However, I'm sure the OP will swoop in tell us that A) she posted between classes while the kids were moving to their next class, B) It's her "off" period, C) her school doesn't care, D) the kids are taking a test or other such non-engaged activity

Of course, there's always an E....

Well maybe it was any of those other things but I'm betting that her students were piling into the classroom just coming off the bus and the OP hadn't officially started teaching yet. Not that it matters to you, because I'm sure that when you are at work you have never ever done anything personal until you left for the day.

ETA I personally think doing your personal hygiene routine in public is pretty uncouth, but kids aren't always thinking about what they do.
