A couple of new questions about the auto train.

First, what should you bring in the bag you choose to bring onto the train? (aside from the obvious like tickets and vouchers etc)

second, does anyone know what goes on at the station in Lorton as far as when boarding starts? does it really pay to get there early to board like noon time? We'll be meeting up with another party and were told that if we wanted to sit together we should plan on getting there fairly early.

I would bring games and activities to pass the time. I would also bring your own pillow, as the ones on the train are very small.
As far as getting there early, the train does not start boarding till 2:30, however, your seat is assigned as soon as you check in. So the earlier you get ther the greater chance of getting seats together with your friends. They also group families with small children together in the same car, and adult only families in a different car.
Dining time is also assigned at check-in. So you will have a greater choice of dinner time the earlier you arrive.
