First camping trip in the badlands, before cell phones and internet were readily available, took kids to Mt Rushmore, National guard stopped us, no info, just leave, park closed, went to a restaurant in Keystone, found out from TV report

I remember being out camping in the days afterward when all flights were shut down and it was eerie how quiet it was.

On Sunday afternoon 9/09/01 we were crossing the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge on the upper level going home to Brooklyn. As we reached the crest of the span we saw a double rainbow. It looked as each one was anchored to one of the Towers.
Lucille came back to our work room where I was doing a job we had contracted for and told me a plane had flown into one of the towers. When she came back and said a second plane had flown into the other one I knew we were at war. I called work and asked were they wanted me to report and after hanging up I told Lucille what to pack in day pack and took a shower, anticipating it was likely my last opportunity to do so for several days. The next 3 days were spent at the morgue.
