First camping trip in the badlands, before cell phones and internet were readily available, took kids to Mt Rushmore, National guard stopped us, no info, just leave, park closed, went to a restaurant in Keystone, found out from TV report

I remember being out camping in the days afterward when all flights were shut down and it was eerie how quiet it was.

On Sunday afternoon 9/09/01 we were crossing the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge on the upper level going home to Brooklyn. As we reached the crest of the span we saw a double rainbow. It looked as each one was anchored to one of the Towers.
Lucille came back to our work room where I was doing a job we had contracted for and told me a plane had flown into one of the towers. When she came back and said a second plane had flown into the other one I knew we were at war. I called work and asked were they wanted me to report and after hanging up I told Lucille what to pack in day pack and took a shower, anticipating it was likely my last opportunity to do so for several days. The next 3 days were spent at the morgue.

I had just returned from a trip to NYC and LI for my niece's baptism and a job interview on September 10th. That job interview was in tower 2 of WTC for a profressional services engineer for the NYC area clients. I had gone to the interview on my way home on the 10th, had a proper italian sub down at battery park before heading back to MD where I lived at the time. I woke up that morning and followed the news all day starting from right after the first plane struck.

After the towers collapsed, I tried to call family on LI and could not get through. The only reliable method for days to contact anyone on LI for days was through email, or if you had someone you know on the same cell phone network that had a cell (I had sprint PCS).

It was eerie silent as I lived in the BWI flight path at the time near Fort Meade and it was so silent. The days after I did a mix of volunteer and contract work to help restore phone communications, bring up radio comms and internet into the various areas of ground zero to help with the search for survivors.

24 years later, I still remember

I got called into work after the second plane hit. At first we set up triage at the train station as it was a direct link to NYC. The figured thousands would be coming in injured. And we had 3 local hospitals ( burn center and reginal trauma) in close proximity to us. Only a handful of people came of the trains. Everything got shut down and people we not able to make it out of the city. So it was a mess and that mess that continued for months. We stationed an Engien in Brooklyn after that for 3 days, and then we sent task forces up from Essex county from Seton Hall University.
