9-08-2010 Pirates through the Mediterranean/ Yo Ho! Yo Ho! A Pirates Life for Us

Do many people feel that there might be problems because of the date?
:confused3

I don't think there are going to be any problems there on that date. The tourist $ probably keep the place afloat so I can not imagine there is going to be any problems. However, we did feel like the Disney organized tour was the way to go while there because nobody in their right mind messes with Mickey.

Air Traffic Controllers in Spain will vote on Thursday if they will strike because of cuts in break time and overtime imposed by the government. If they vote to strike, they must give 10 days notice before they strike.

I doubt anything would happen IN a Muslim country on Sept 11. More likely to happen in the US or England.

Change of topic...Once we board on day 1 can we get back off the boat before it sails?

That's a really good question, I'm not sure, we're going to leave our bags with our hotel bellman and go tour Barcelona in the morning, so we'll probably board at 2:30 or so.

Curious as to what everyone is going to be doing in Tunisia? Based on what day it is, my wife and I are debating on whether we just want to even leave the ship with our children. Especially with me being active military.

If anything is there anything to do in Tunisia right off the ship? If anything we'll do a structured Disney tour as that would probably be alot safer than trying it on our own...

You wouldn't wear your uniform onshore would you? If you dress like a tourist, I expect you would be treated like just one of the crowd! This is a good overview of the area, it doesn't go iinto a lot of detail. http://www.eportreviews.com/Europe/Tunis_Tunisia.htm

Here's another website with some info for you. http://looklex.com/tunisia/carthage.htm

I JUST SAW THIS ON THE "REGULAR" DCL FORUMS! AMAZING!

I'm onboard the Magic right now and Captian John came on at about noon today and announced that at 3:45am this morning, the Magic rec'd a SOS call stating that a nearby ship heard screams in the water. The ship then commenced rescue operations and found 18 Algierians who had been lost at sea for 4-5 days. They are onboard now and are recieving food and water and healthcare. WOW!

I am living life as anything could happen anywhere (at home, anywhere on this trip, etc) so I am going to enjoy what I want to do and live life to the fullest of course with my wits about me at all times not to become a victim. (JMO)

Me too! :thumbsup2

As far as Tunisia,
I chose a DCL excursion of the Panoramic Drive because I do not want to spend time shopping. I had been to Casablanca before and did not enjoy visiting the markets or shopping. I felt uncomforatable and we are military as well. I may change my mind because I might want to see the Bardo Museum.

If I had little kids, I may treat this stop as a sea day and enjoy the pool as another poster suggested. I have also read (perhaps on another thread) that it is a local custom for the locals to pet a child's head or touch a child's hair for good luck. Don't know how much that is true. I think I read that on someone's trip report.

on the WBTA thread that question was asked, too, and the answer is yes, but they want you back on for the life boat drill, then you can leave again so long as you are back before the ship sails.

No-one's interested, but ...

Got our docs today!!! Had to chase them down personally at Fedex here in Nassau where the concept of "street addresses" is a bit hazy. Of course I'd have never known to track 'em down if hadn't been for the shouts of delirium heard on here ...

All concited and exfused ... :cool1:

Good to know that our shouts of delirium serve multiple purposes! It would have been awful if you didn't get your docs!

BTW, if anyone knows Tink Rules (Michelle and her mom Barbara), would you let them know that I need their cabin number? They're the last set I need for the FE list.

I've gotten some of my stuff made, got all of the materials ordered, now I just have to finish it all!:cool1:

 Since most of us will be eventually using this, thought I'd post this question that I "borrowed" from another location. :rolleyes1

Re: How do you say "take me to the pier" in Spanish?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

... just in case....this is all you need to say......and don't forget to say "please" or "por favor" and add "al muelle" pronounced moo - EL - yay.

So, just say, Please, to the pier....... Por favor, al muelle....and you could add [Mickey Mouse], etc. don't worry...you will arrive and enjoy your cruise.........

Or you can use pigeon spanish and ask:

Nos puede llevar al muelle donde esta Mickey Mouse?

 I forgot the Por Favor - nos puede llevar al muelle donde esta Mickey Mouse?

Believe it or not, this I got from a taxi driver when he picked us up from a hotel on Las Ramblas - he also said if all else fails, just say "Mickey Mouse". Really? Mickey Mouse if universal. That's all you have to say. Most taxi drivers in Barcelona are tri-lingual if not more.

Note: From the top of Las Ramblas where the HRC is - it took us about 10-15 minutes and most of that was sitting in traffic on Las Ramblas.

I love this! I was tempted to try and download a Spanish/Italian/French dictionary to my Kindle, but then decided I don't really want to carry it around on excursions, it's perfect for not having to tote along 5 or 6 books (I read a LOT, and really fast so DH bought it for me for Mother's day ) but, I don't want to have to watch it.

I may have missed this topic... but is anyone going to be in BCN the weekend before the cruise??
We will be arriving on Friday 3 September, and staying in an apartment.
Maybe we can schedule a pre cruise meet???
