.......

If you are not going to be there to check in the first day of your reservation, call the resort and let them know.

Best wishes -

January 2, 2006 is a Monday, and yes it's a national holiday.

There are really two questions here. One is are you going to get to Orlando on the 2nd, the other is what happens to the reservation if you don't.

The reservation question you already have the correct answer to, from Carol. If you are having flight difficulties to the point that you fear you may not make it to Orlando...definitely call the resort. The resort -- not Member Services.

With the flight, it's hard to say because we don't know what airline you're flying, or where you are flying from. If you are flying from Logan, you will have more options than from Providence.

Airlines overbook flights, so if there are cancellations, you should get a seat. You should know, however - before you book a standby ticket - that the airline is going to fulfill their frequent flyers' standby requests before yours. Personally, I don't think there will be a lot of heavy-duty frequent fliers flying on Jan 2, but you never know.

If you don't get on your scheduled flight, they will try to put you on a later flight. If you're flying a major airline, they will obviously have more flight options to use to try to accommodate your standby. If you're flying Wing 'N A Prayer Airline, they may not have another flight that day.

I might suggest you try flying on the 1st, since that will likely be a light travel day. If you get out, you might be able to find a cheap off site place for that night. When booking our flights for NYE, we found the fares to be quite reasonble on Dec. 31 because so few travel that day. You might find the same thing for the 1st.

I just want to stress the need to let the resort what you are doing. If you don't let them know that travel has delayed you and just don't arrive, they can cancel the entire reservation and the owner forfeits all the points.

How do you book a standby ticket? Is it cheaper? Or is it some kind of airline employee ticket?

DH and I used to fly standby all of the time. With two young kids, it's too stressful so we just wait for good deals. Anyway, my FIL was the airline employee. DH was a higher priority than I was. I was the lowest of the low. We often traveled during the Holiday Season and found that flying on Christmas Day was great. We always got first class. Flying at New Year's was trickier. We always made it if we flew on New Year's Eve but we never sat together and always got middle seats. Seems like there wasn't room once on our first flight but we made it out on the second. Good luck. It really is stressful.

Also, we used points to stay at the Grand Californian in Disneyland. DD ended up with a nasty stomach virus and we didn't think we would be able to arrive when expected. We called and were told that the room would be held for us for the entire time we reserved it so to just show up when we could.

I know someone who used to work for USAir. They had an automated line that they could call that would tell them how many non-rev seats were open on a flight. There should be someway for you to find out the day before how full the flights are.
