I'll join in with all the moms who believe this should stay 'voluntary'. I have enough complaints about my school district requiring dental exams every few years (and why do they need to be involved in whether my kids have bad gums or not) let alone something like this.

Wow John. I heard about this happening in CA too. Crazy. Crazy and sad.:sad2:

Well, I can't believe it, but this is my 100th post on this thread!!! Considering I've on the Dis for over 3 and 1/2 years and I only have 257 posts in that time, I'm shocked at myself!!! I guess that's nearly 40% of all my posts on this thread?!?!?!?!?! :teacher: Holy Moly!!!

Congrats to you!!!:grouphug: This board does definitely brings out my more passionate side to talk. " My DH says if I had no one to talk to, I would get a wall to talk back to me."

:rotfl2: Me too! Guess we're just social butterflies! :butterfly

Would this be the same event that the website we were spammed about last week is planning? If so, I think that it is only fair that people know who else will be there if they sign up for this.

I did see it on their site and looked into it online. I was checking to see if there would be enough interest for us to plan our own picnic. Or we could look into joining them as well. I'm willing to investigate further if there is interest.

I don't want to get flamed for this, I'm not insinuating that we can't work together, it's just that we seem to be getting to know each other on this board and thought this kind of get-together would give us the chance to get to know each other better.

Good afternoon Everyone:coffee:

Lisa - I am sorry for your loss. My prayers go out to your family.:grouphug:

Way back in the day (50's) our public school in Brooklyn had a nurses clinic which I helped out with once a week and my friends dad who was the local dentist, would volunteer and work on kids teeth (yes there was a full working chair etc) whos parents couldn't afford it. I guess we took that for granted and never questioned it. I was surprised when moving down here in Florida that some of the schools don't even have a nurse. The have volunteers in the clinic. I remember in school during that time, you had to provide a note from the dentist to show you were being seen or your child was referred to the school clinic. They felt if a child had bad dental health, they may not be able to concentrate in school.

Personally, and I hope this doesn't get me flamed, I don't see what the big deal was. Sounded like fun after I looked at the site. I'm sure DL is big enough that nobody has to be on top of anyone they don't want to be.

Huh?
If we planned it for our group (those on this thread) it would be only our group (those on this thread) that will be there. If we did this, it wouldn't be merged with other groups.
*I'm confused what you mean*
Was the person that posted that talking about signing us up with another group doing this?

Hi .. See my prior response to Lisa ... I was asking if there was interest enough to organize our own, not join their picnic. I will be calling to ask them about more info and will post what I gather.

Good morning! wow only 7 pages to get through :yay:

Luckily my staff telecon was canceled

Shaping up to be a nice day:

Forecast

Friday will be warm and breezy with lots of sunshine, but changes move into Southern Colorado tonight. Snow showers will continue in the Rockies today, and then a rain/snow mix will begin along the Front Range this evening. Snow showers paired with strong winds will continue through the night and for tomorrow morning. A BLIZZARD WATCH will go into effect for N. El Paso County and the Southeastern Plains starting tonight and lasting through Saturday afternoon. Wind driven snow tonight and tomorrow will turn the roads icy and reduce visibility for travelers. Snow totals will range from a trace to 3 inches along the Front Range and 2 to 6 inches are possible for the Palmer Divide, N. El Paso County and the Eastern Colorado Plains. The central and southwestern mountains could receive up to a foot in some areas. We will have clearing skies late Saturday and for Sunday as the temps will try to warm up for Sunday and Monday.

Currently 52°
High Today 58°
Low Tonight 24°

He was so upset for me, wrote a note stating Megan was fine and I took her back to school. I had to get her "relaased" by the nurse before she could go back to class. I gave the nationally known Dr's note and she said.... "Well, I don't believe it"!!! I got Megan checked in, glared at the nurse, and left in tears.
All of this becasue Megan holds the book closely to her face when she reads.:sad2:

I would have been furious! :( We do have a mobile dental office that comes to the school but the parents have to give permission for their child to be seen. We have a large percentage of title one students in the school and this is the only chance they will have to get good dental care however there is nothing mandated that they receive it. :sad2:

I trust all goes well for you DH's knee surgery!!! I've had 7 knee operations over the years, so I do feel for your DH.

That's one reason I had such a trying day yesterday, my left knee was so stiff because of the weather, I could hardly bend it at all.

Ouch. Only one knee surgery here. My knee gets stiff in the cold, so I can only imagine how bad your knee must feel on a cold morning. TG for Advil.

Wow! That is interesting. You school requires dental exams? Now I noticed you stated only "every few years" so that is what people should be doing anyway but that does appear a bit intrusive.
This kind of reminds me of a situation w/ oldest DD when she was in the 1st grade. Her teacher called me and said "I think Megan needs to see an Optometrist". She has glasses, how in the world did she think we got the glasses to begin w/?:confused3 I told her that Megan had seen one of 3 Pediatrict Opthamologist (MD's) every 6 months since she was born. She is in a multi-national study on her eye disorder and has been monitored very carefully. Well I thought that would stop the conversation but, no..... She kept calling me every day making me feel like I was worlds worst parent because I was "not taking care of my child". I was finally in tears when I took her to her main Opthamologist and he said "Why are your here so soon after your last appt.?". I said because the school nurse said I had to.

Wow, sorry you had such an experience! :grouphug:

I think we all have to sit back and reflect for a moment. Why do you think the government is intruding so much? They are starting to cover all the bases when it has to do with our kids. From puberty (and Family Life), to morals, to manners, to vaccines, onto going to the doctor or dentist... We ask for it more or less. We want them to do something about teen pregnancies, STDs, criminals, drugs, etc. What do we expect them to do? Their only option is to put it in the schools. This is where they can reach the masses.

Now I for one do not agree with most of it. I think the government is a bit too much into our business and how we deal with our everyday lives in terms of protecting ourselves and our families. But we keep turning to them for solutions...

We have turned into a "It's not MY fault" society and the government is trying to protect their butts much the same way as companies do with all of their (mostly) useless warning lables. In a perfect world, parents would take care of their own business. It is just really hard for the ones that DO take care of their families to deal with being put in with the masses that don't.

SO while I am up ranting by myself . . .

Reading about people who received e-mails about the new ships reminded me of something.

I think Disney hates me.

We've been to a park (WDW or DL) every year since we had kids in 1998.
We had WDW passes when we lived in FL
Cruised DCL 2x - '08 will be 3, we're on an every other year schedule (CC members, right?)
I buy everything with my Disney Visa
Disney shareholders (OK 2 shares, but still!)
Buy oodles of stuff from Disney Shopping
Disney Insider e-mail list

HAVE I EVER RECEIVED A POSTCARD, E-MAIL, OR ANYTHING ELSE????
NNNNOOOOOOOO! We've certainly never been family of the minute for any department.

I even had to call 3 months after our last cruise to see if they would send me the little CD kit-thingy I found out about on the Dis.

Come on Mickey - where's the love?

I was going to agree with you, but an email came late last night. Good thing we have the Dis to get the 411 or else we'd the last to know.

I received some bad news when I woke up this morning and have been trying to deal with that. DH's GM died Wednesday night. I haven't been able to reach him yet but the service wont be for a couple weeks. She will be buried with her DH in Arlington National Cemetary so we have to wait for an opening. Gram was a very sweet lady who I didn't meet until her DH died, but she and the rest of the family treated me wonderfully. We had just sent out our engagement announcements the week before his accident. She has been in a rest home for quite a while since suffering with alzheimer's. She died peacefully in her sleep, so that is comforting.

I just wanted you to know if I am not around much today.

More :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: for you and your family.

:offtopic: Read this article this morning and it sort of goes with the discussion from yesterday. List of most and least affordable cities for home prices. It is based on home prices as compared to average income.

Most Affordable
Indianapolis IN $113,000 price $65,100 avg. income
Youngstown OH $83,000 price $52,100 avg. income
Detroit MI $92,000 price $56,700 avg. income
Toledo OH $105,000 price $58,900 avg. income
Buffalo NY $89,000 price $58,300 avg. income
Least
Los Angeles CA $525,000 price $56,200 avg. income
Santa Ana CA $620,000 price $78,300 avg. income
San Diego CA $475,000 price $64,900 avg. income
New York NY $500,000 price $59,200 avg. income
Modesto CA $360,000 price $54,400 avg. income

It is an interesting list, but who the heck wants to live in Toledo OH or Detroit MI?

You mean there are still homes out there for less than $150,000??

There has been plenty of testing done on the vaccination. There has been at least 5-7 years. It works. The only question is whether the immunity will last a life-time vs 10-20 years. Only time will tell.

My son is a microbiolgist for a major drug firm. He tells me some drugs have been in the pipeline(term for how long a new drug is being worked on) for over twenty years. The 5-7 years is not a great deal of time when you consider your children are priceless. I have, over the years, refused shots because my DD has an allergic reaction to Vaccines based on egg whites. She is 33 and could never get a flu shot or the Mumps shot. It should be a decision on what a parent feels comfortable with.

I really do wish we had a Target. Right now I wish it were at least 40 degrees warmer (it's -10).

BUT - this is about a block from my house.
eagle_river1_small.jpg

I'll take this any day.

That is a beautiful sight. We have multiple Targets, malls, grocery stores, etc, but sometimes I wish I had something like your scenery. I guess there's always a trade-off.

Then again, that's why we go on vacations, to experience where we don't live and see the beauty of other places.
