Tom, believe me it was so hard giving Adam the freedom to drive. But I sold him my 98 Volvo and I got a nice brand new Lincoln LS. (sacrafice I know) but I wanted Adam in a safe car. I am proud to say that in a little over 2 years driving no tickets or accidents (do you hear me knocking on the desk!!). I still do not let him ride anyone else in his car. I did promise him if he finished jr and sr year with all A's & B's we would buy him a new truck. Jr. year blew that out of the water. But we are leaning towards helping him get a new truck after graduation--he managed to put away a good chunk towards it over the summer by me working him 56 hours a week. I am hoping by next year he will be a little more mature and not drive quite so fast--trucks are easier to flip than a car.:)

56 hours over the summers... that sounds like my summers when I was growing up. However - to the scorn and withering glare of my spouse - I was given a new car to drive (after I drove a company delivery van as my ride - or an old clunker LTD as a "leaqrning car"). I did pay for all my own expenses and insurance though. That was pretty tough back then - and I eventually sort of got subsidies when I was not working as much. My spouse on the other hand worked to save$ - and her parents had a matching formula linked to grades. She alone was the only one of her siblings who earned a car early... while her siblings waited and got thiercars free - but had to wait several years. THAT was the deal in their family. My spouse has a decent work ethic. Me... I was a compensated indentured servant at my parents' business.

As for the 98 Volvo... thats' probably the perfect choice for for a not so big but relatively safe car. It has a reputation for extremely good safety design. I don't suppose it was a relatively BRIGHT COLOR too was it? AND.... may I add that having had no accidents or tickets is a remarkable - and noteworty thing. I had one accident early on (hence my nick-name) and I covered it up by paying for everything out of my pocket. But money could not stop my good friends from taunting me with the nick name.

So - yeah - up until a couple weeks ago I had a near perfect public driving record - no accidents ever on my record involving another car... yup .... the low life who hit me in the rental car on Oahu ruined that record. Hit and run too.

Oh well... on the trucks rolling... I've actually only seen a couple of accidents live. On one occasion it was a surreal slow motion thing where a BMW sedan was hit at an intersection and rolled over. And on another occasion I saw a sedan flip over for no apparent reason on a high speed freeway tansition ramp right ahead of me. It went tumbling and banging back and forth in the lane ... scary and violent looking. Hmmm... come to think of it ... I've seen a lot of accidents happen right in front of me more or less. we'll pass on recanting the other incidents for now...

Well, If we get her a car it will be a car that Mom wants and she will get to drive it. There is no way she can handle my huge SUV so if she is going to drive it will have to be a smaller vehicle. Mark has a company car so she can't drive that. Of course, it will be nice for me if we get a fun cool car.

We've been planning on giving DS12 one of our cars when he is old enough to drive - problem is I currently drive a 300C with the hemi and DH has a Durango with a hemi and there is no way that DS is getting either one of them. So when the lease is up on my car I'll probably get either an Avenger or a smaller SUV and when DS gets his license he will inherit that and then I'll get another car - leaning toward a two-seater...won't need to have a backseat anymore!:rotfl2:

I do have to say that our friends who bought their daughter the Mustang, have a pretty safe daughter. For the last few years she has volunteered for the fire department and she has seen her share of accidents and deaths in her work. She is extremely cautious when driving. She knows first hand the results of poor driving decisions.

Sil you might want to check your tickets. I think that the Magic will be returning to PC on 9/1, that would be a SATURDAY not Sunday:scared1: . Would hate for you to miss your first cruise on the Magic.

I think he is going on the Wonder, Roger and that leaves on Sundays

It is storming pretty bad all over Orlando now. Hope it clears up for tomorrow.

Listen to this frustration. My grandson started middle school this week. The storm was pretty bad this afternoon when he was to get out around 3:30. The Principal decided NOT to let the kids out of the buildings. Her reason is the buildings are not connected. (However the younger ones have portables and they were able to get to the bus lines.) So here it is at 6:39 and Morgan needs his afternoon meds, there is a line of cars since 3ish at the school and one parent was taken away in handcuffs:scared1: I called the newschannels and they are aware of what is going on and already have a crew there. Meantime, the mom who was to pick the kids up has been locked down on the line since 3:30 and cannot get out of the line. She is blocked in and noone is moving. My daughter is going to have to call the Sheriffs office to see if she can get him out with an escort!!!!!
What a mess!!!!!!!

Now there's a good idea... Note to self - volunteer DD for Fire/Police/Hospital when she's 13 - 14.

My mom had one of the original mustangs....same color, and very similar body style. I guess I have always sort of considered mustangs to be more "mom mobiles" than "muscle cars."

I hope you enjoy yours!

Way to burst my bubble, Enna...

My mom drove a station wagon when she was my age. Followed by a minivan.

Is the principal insane?
How much safer is it to have hundreds of parents lined up in their cars for 3 hours?

I already have my two-seater picked out. In fact, we almost bought it a few months ago....but then Jay and I remembered that we still have a son at home...:rotfl:
As soon as Jared's driving (2 years!) I'm getting a Solstice. I think they're awesome! Lots of people here have Porsches and BMW's and Jags.....I'm not impressed with spending that kind of money. I'll take the Soltice and be thrilled with it!

Yeah good girl buying a GM product. I personally like they SKY better but the Soltice is awesome too. Remember you have friends who work for GM and can get you some discounts.

Just like this, only not this color

Jay says he wants us (who's US...it'll be MINE) to have one before we're so old that we look like all the other old people around here in their hot cars. LOL

I remember that picture, I think Cheryl was hiding her drink under her poncho to keep the water out.:drinking1

You're probably right!!! LOL!

The only night it rained during the cruise was during the Pirate party! But, WE didn't let that stop us!! :dance3:

In this pic is the rest of my family dancing at the party!

Stace.........I knew there was a reason I liked you !!!!!

For a two seater I would love to have a ZO6 !!!!! Never gonna happen with 2 kids approaching College age...............

Mark

They have a green that's called "Envious".....I love it.

Sounds great. I've always wanted an Alpha Romeo Spider or Miata in something approaching British Racing Green. Not gonna happen while we have a little sprout. :guilty:

That's a piece of change there! Gotta go wipe the drool off my chin.

My first car was a 1974 Corvette Stingray convertible....I was 17 yrs old. My parents must have been bonkers...but I never wrecked it and never got a ticket.
My brother took it once (and only once) and blew all the belts off.

He wished it was a bright color, but no a nice sedate shade of blue. I sternly warned him when he got his license that any tickets or accidents his fault before he turned 18 and his license was being turned into the state. It was bad enough (and still is more than 2x) paying for his insurance without loosing all the discounts on it. (I still have full coverage on that car) And he knew I was serious about it. There are some things that he knows he has some tolerance about, but he does know when I am serious. I wondered what you did to get your nickname! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

That's just about the same color green.

And I have to wait until my 14 yr old 5'10" sprout is gone, too. :guilty:

That sounds wonderful...

... however.... I've known kids who are quite good - but you know what they say - it only takes one incident. And the most distracting thing is if and when friends are in the car with them.

I once saw a small car weaving up from behind me a good ways off. Yes, I scan through my rear view mirrors too. And when the car paseed me it was a toyata Paseo with a young man with a baseball cap reversed. He zipped past me a high speed, cuting me off (unnecessarily) near my bumper... then he proceeded to cut across the next cars' bumper... where upon he spun out in front of us sliding side ways. He slid for a bit side ways then abruptly his wheels bit and he rolled forward... or rather he rolled forward but he was facing sideways to us so he rolled quickly across the center lane into oncoming traffic. He tried to correct and began to rotate but hit another car abruptly - head on to his 3/4 angle car. It happened right in front of me as we slowed down since it developed in front of us. I had never seen anything like this before as when the vehicles impacted they burst into a huge rust/brown puff of smoke.

This was pretty sad as right after this happened - like within 3-5 seconds of it happening I turned onto a freeway on ramp and immediately realized I was an eye witness. I called back later - as I could not get back due to the 5PM traffic crush and acident stopped all traffic at that intersection. Plus - I was under the gun to get some express mail to the post office. So - I did call back and they said they had statements and witnesses - but they took my name and contact info in case they needed further witnesses.

This was really sad because the other head on car was an older one. The kid in the Paseo was in a newer car - and thus a safer one. The other innocent driver was in a helpless situation they way it developed. And they are probably more likely in some ways to have been injured. It was a full speed head on for one car - and a side sliding then 3/4 impact for the Paseo. Hence forth from then I used to think kids are potentially very dangerous drivers. Late nite I've had kids weaving zig zags (zagging wrong way towards me) after midnite when I've walked my dog in our neighborhood.

And now - some of you folks must be thinking I must live in the crazy teen driver capitol of the nation - or hat I'm some kind of magnet for bad drivers. Well... I've always been a high milage driver - not a trucker - but just the sort who has to drive 5 miles just to get to the super market (or anything). In the first year I drove a car - I drove 50,000+ miles. In the past 20 years I would have to drive fairly long distances to get to any business meetings - and I'd rack up significant mileage. Not to say I drive anymore than anyone else = as I have trucker friends who talk about achieving 1,000,000 miles of accident free driving as an achievable goal!

So - I don't really have any solutions. My kids are only 6 and 3 - but I think about the driving thing for them anyway. And I read with serious interest about how everyone here is contending with it. I can see everyone has concerns and has different approaches - and thankfully - it seems everyone has matters under good control.
