So, I'm back from the land of ice and snow
We left about 6:45am Friday and started our long journey.
We drove thru nice weather and then much snow and wind and drifting swirling snow. It was very, very nasty. I've seen enough snow now to last me for 5 years.
We almost ran out of gas because we underestimated the distance between gas stations.
Travelling up in the north in the winter is not like travelling down the I75

There are huge distances between gas stations and not much else in between them.
We arrived at Alex's apartment about 10:15pm. We hung around there for a bit and shortly after 11 Rick and I left Liz at Alex's and headed for our room at the bed and breakfast nearby. I had stayed there in the fall when I helped Alex move north. It was a wonderful place, very nice, warm friendly couple, great breakfast, loved it.
We get there and there is nobody there

What the heck is this all about?? Ring the door, nope, check the door and it is locked. There are lights on in the kitchen but obviously no one is home.
So I try calling and get the answering machine. I leave a message and we head back to Alex's. What do we do now? Alex's place is way to small, nowhere for 4 people to sleep. You wouldn't want to set foot in any of the motels in this very small northern town, judging just by the outside.
About 11:45 we get a call. It is the couple's daughter. She says they have gone away and she is running the B & B for the weekend. She had to go out (at that time of night

) and she was going out again and would leave the door unlocked, just pick ourselves out a room for the night.
Okay, so we go over, pick a room and go to bed. Come morning (9:45am). We go downstairs looking for breakfast........ not a soul to be seen

We knew she was there because her purse and boots were there. Didn't feel right rummaging thru someone else's house so we woke the kids up and went out for brunch.
We drove around the area. Alex showed us around two of his ambulance bases. We met some of his co-workers (great guys, lots of laughs). We went to the grocery store and cooked ourselves dinner at Alex's place.
Now, What about our room for that night at the B & B. So I call over there, no answer. A bit later the daughter calls and says, she has to go out and will drop us off a key at Alex's place before she leaves so we can get in when we want. Okay great, fine with us.
Sunday morning we are up early to start our journey home (hopefully with better road and weather conditions) I was awake during the night (4am) and heard the daughter downstairs speaking with a man, so I don't think she went to bed at all that night.
We get up and she is awake and is making us some breakfast. She didn't ask what we wanted just gave us a bacon and egg bagel. It tasted good but what if we just wanted toast?
We talked to her for about 15 minutes while we ate and that is all we saw of her. Turns out the she is working on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in the children's area. She actually has met the young man that lives across the street from us and also works for Norwegian Cruise line. Small world.
We pick up Liz at Alex's apartment and head for home. For the most part the weather and road conditions were much better on Sunday. Took us a lot longer to get home though for some reason
