5/27/06 Il Pochi il Fiero y Blabbermouths....Magical Reunion

Another gloomy day in the Northeast. Possible rain showers again today. Kinda makes you wanna stay in bed with a good book. I really can't complain - we had Election Day off AND we have Veteran's Day off, too. Then 3 days for Thanksgiving. Not a bad month in the school system.

Have a good day everyone.

Hey Maria, I remember you saying you are working now but don't recall what it is that you're doing. What are you doing at school?

I work in a high school as an Administrative Assistant to the Athletic Director. So, it's with all the sports teams, etc. I love it. I was a jock in high school and have 4 older brothers so I feel that this is my destiny. haha

Good Day all - congrats to Emily...

And all this time we have a movie star in our midst? I wonder if our Blockbusters has a copy of "On the Right Track" ???
Hum,

I'm on a roll to complete the Christmas shopping in the next few days/weeks...so that I can enjoy the season without the hubbub of shopping. As I have few children, the slow ecomony will help focus on the need to properly manage giftgiving to one thoughtful and needed present. My "kids" are easy to shop for as they get memberships in the local zoo or science museum....which is a plus for me since I contribute anyway (hey, no Scrouge comments please).

That only leaves Sam...:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 Maybe Jim can give me some wine suggestions. I have an extra $5.00 in my wallet:rotfl2:

Onward!

I'm not Jim but I have a suggestion on wine ... $3 bottle of wine from Trader Joe's. Then you still have some change in your wallet. :rotfl2:

Like your ideas of gifts for the kids. I'm jealous that you're almost done. I haven't started yet!

Ang

Angie, you have a Trader Joes now? I know they haven't made it to Florida yet. One of the major reasons we won't be moving there any time soon. :rotfl:

Congrats to Emily. She will love her TAG class, they always have wonderful teachers. I hope she gets to do a pull-out class, at least. That was the only place Alicia felt at home in elementary school. In mid-school, the boys turned into talented and gifted bullies, and it was not so much fun.

Kevin wants a Blu-Ray player for Christmas. I'm waffling between an ipod Touch so I can download audio books and games, or a Kindle. So many toys, so little time and money. Alicia already got her new ipod touch AND her new Verizon Voyager phone. She's pretty much set, we just have to wrap the empty boxes for under the tree. As if.

I've started some of my shopping...late...I'm usually done by Thanksgiving...
I have a couple for Jared (not telling, though, since he reads the Boards) and for Jay. Am stuck on what to get Jordan :confused3 and Megan will be easy...maternity clothes!

From this we now know the difference between a winer and a wino.....the price of the wine!

Exactly what someone once told me when I was new to the Boards and I asked what the difference was between a balcony and a verandah...

THE PRICE

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Way to go Emily!!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Congrats to Lauren too...Honor Roll/Presidents List.....all "A"s !! :yay: :yay:

Yes, we do have Trader Joe's here in ATL-metro. Bruce & I have been drinking $2 Chuck now. We not aficionados so it doesn't matter to us.

Emily will go to TAG every Thursday. From what she said, they are pulled out of their normal class & go to the TAG "learning cottage" (trailer) for the day, with the exception of having to go to their normal math class. Is that what you mean by pull-out class? Guess I'll find out more in an hour when I pick her up from school.

What's a Kindle?

I really miss my dad's homemade wine. Especially the wildberry shiraz.

Once we move to the new place, we're going to attempt to make wine ourselves. We'll see how that goes. :)

Cool! UTOP!

Congrats to Lauren too...Honor Roll/Presidents List.....all "A"s !! :yay: :yay:

Well, Lisa didn't quite live up to Lauren's standards (kind of hard :rotfl2: ), but she got 6 A's and 1 B. With her core classes being Honors the Weighted GPA is 4.2, but unweighted it was 3.85. I was very proud of her. YEA for the NEW HIGH SCHOOLERS having a good first semester.:thumbsup2 All I know is that it bought me another 5 weeks of NOT having to check if her homework is done or being able to look at "Creek Connect" (where her online grades are). That is the deal we have. So long as her grades are A's (I will accept a B here and there. Her B in English was an 88, so she thinks she can pull it up by next Report Card), I can't check up on her homework / class grades. I am hoping to go 4 years without having to that.:cool1: :cool1:

Gee, two buck Chuck costs $3 here. No fair.

Alicia had math and english as a pull-out class, every day, 3rd through 5th grade. That meant she left her classroom and went to another teacher with other GT kids. It replaced english and math in her regular classroom in the mornings. Then she had the two hour english and language arts class in 6th - 8th. At her mid-school, she was able to take gifted science 7th and 8th. Wow, I guess NM has it pretty good for GT programs, who would of thought? I think a lot of it was just the schools she went to, too. Now she has "graduated" and there are no more services, but in a regular high school she would be directed to AP classes. Of course, she is not at a regular high school.

Hooray for kids who get good grades without micro management! I don't micromanage any more, but I do have to threaten. As in "any C's on your progress report, and you won't etc etc". Alicia usually gets A's, but between our trip and her missing 6 days in the last couple of weeks due to illness, I'm afraid she's behind and not catching up.

Grades are still an issue here... but getting a little better as far as Elizabeth is concerned... not so much with Christopher... this was his first term of Middle School, and he's had a difficult time becoming organized. Elizabeth knows that if she's not on honor roll next term, she won't get her learner's permit in February.

In terms of shopping, the 'big gift' for the kids has already been procured. And tonight, Ray and I went out and bought a new french-door stainless steel refrigerator... which will pretty much rule out much else.

I have to admit that while not like Lauren, Lisa and Alicia...I'm pretty proud of Jared. All "A"s with one "B"....in English, of all things! An "A" in French, though....go figure. I'm hoping he keeps it up, his incentive is his trip to Europe this summer.

Wow, Stacey, that's great! Tell him congrats, we're proud of him too. He's working hard, and earning that trip.

*drool* I wanted one of these when we had to get a new fridge in London. But our house was old (1970's) and the opening would not accommodate one.

Now I have the chance to get one, but in the rental we have ice and water through the door and we LOVE LOVE LOVE it. But it's a side by side which I don't care for (love the bottom freezer).

I know they make french door fridges with the ice/water through the door, but the fridge repair man we had here said they have lots of issues with them. We have until our house is built to figure out what we're going to do.

So.....do you have ice and water through the door? If so, I want daily updates on your fridge! HA!

Yes, ice and water through the door. It will be here on Monday. It is the 'french door' type, which I have wanted since they came out. Its got the freezer 'drawer' in the bottom, which is actually 2 drawers once you open it up. I had to laugh because the sales guy was all over the fact that its got an alarm on it if you keep it open too long... in the 14 years that I've had kids, none of them has ever walked away and left the fridge open... I don't think they'll start now!!!

We have problems with our current ice maker, which is one of the reasons we're getting rid of the current fridge. It's only 7 years old (I think... it was here with the house), but I hate it. It's a side-by-side, so nothing large fits ANYWHERE. Thank God for our chest freezer in the garage, or we'd never have a Digiorno pizza!!

I really shouldn't skim through posts quickly, I read your post as the kids' big gift was the refrigerator.... I missed the "And tonight" :lmao:

They call it $2 Chuck but it's $3 here too.

Our school handles english & math similarly here but they don't classify it as GT. They group kids as on-level, advanced or accelerated (one-year ahead) and swtich classes for the subjects. I think I need to fight a battle (or at least inquire assertively) with regards to Emily & math. She's in on-level math & reading classes. I agree with the reading but not with the math. I inquired about it at the beginning of the year but was sort of given the run-around .... she is where her teacher from last year said she needed to be, kids in our school in on-level are not below average, etc. Now that I'm getting test scores in, I think I need to fight it. Also I need to fight it because Emily has come home a couple of times saying she's bored in math. I also found the criteria for being placed in advanced class & I'm pretty sure Emily meets/exceeds that criteria. The school can't make me believe that are no kids in the on-level class that are brining the other ones down! Emily's class just went through multiplication & had to pass timed tests on the facts. They couldn't move on to the next number family until the passed the one they were on. She passed all tests WAY before anyone else in her class .. she went 0-12 & the closest kid to her was still on 7s.

Ok ... enough of my school rant.
