In RE to the above, I want to share a bit of the note from Taylors teach that I got last night

"We are deeply concerned about Taylor. There is absolutely no reason why she is not progressing satisfactorily in the 3rd grade. She is smart and certainly has the ability to do everything that is required of her. Taylor is either choosing not to do what she is told/and/or she is not listening and paying attention. Consequences dont seem to matter to her. SHe does what she wants most of the time and uses excuse after excuse for not having her work."
(of course teacher wrote with much better splling than me! HAHA)

THe part in blue concerns me, becasue it seems as though the teach thinks she is doing this n purpose.....

Sounds like what I heard from Caleb's 2nd grade teacher. Time to sit down with the teacher and principal and discuss this one. I wish I'd known about the IEP/504 plan a few years ago. I certainly know what you're going through.

Boy does all of this sound familiar. Caleb was diagnosed with moderate/sever ADHD in kindergarten. He was on Concerta, but developed too many side effects. He's been on Strattera for almost 2 years, now. He went from a 10 slim to a 12 husky after being switched! The Strattera helps a lot. He's matured so much since 3rd and even 4th grade; we haven't had nearly as much fighting over homework in 5th grade. I also insist on a conference with the teacher at least once a month, but haven't needed it so far this year.

.
What kinds of side effects are you talking about? About the only thing that I notice in Taylor, os that some days she is very sensitive and can get her feelings hurt very easily..

Caleb was having trouble sleeping and developing tics and making involuntary sounds (sort of like Tourette's). Strattera had just come out, so his dr. switched him over. He was also very negative and talked about how much he wished he was just dead. I was glad for the switch.

Well, there goes my bribery theory. Only one thing is certain, they are all different. I would think the Australia trip is too far away, though. Matt must be one of those kids that don't care if things get taken away, but the jeep keys might give you a little more leverage! Of course, when you get used to them driving themselves around, it's more like you're the one being punished!

Well, after this week - I think the Jeep may even be iffy. I think if that happens I will feel more punished than he does. I was really counting on his driving himself around in the near future.

And thanks, Sharon! I need to put Good Will Hunting on my Netflix queu. Good one for Alicia. But I'm thinking it was rated R?

It is. I think for language (although I am sure Alicia has heard it all before)

I'm sorry to hear that! Since we've been driving Alicia to a distant school, I've been really warming to the idea of getting her a car. Or at least letting her take mine when I plan to stay home and work. I so hope she earns it, it would be so nice for us!

I was one of those parents that said that I'd never put my child on medication, but after CJ was diagnosed, Larry was diagnosed, also. Then he found out that his parents knew when he was still and school and refused meds for him. He told me horror stories about trying to get through high school, and it all makes sense to him, knowing that now (he's on Concerta, also). We decided to give CJ all the help that we could so he wouldn't have to go through that. It's still hard, but we sure understand a lot more.

I know that feeling. It was a blessing when my girls started driving, but I had to ground one from the car for awhile. It was worse when the younger one lost her license for too may speeding tickets. I had to drive her the 15 miles to work (no bus service and too far away from town for taxi or bike). Just who was being punished? We only have 5 more years before CJ drives, but I can wait. It will go by in the blink of an eye.

I think there is some of this for Matt that is on purpose. If the assignment is long or boring, he "just forgets" to do it, or the teacher loses it, or .. . . . . We keep searching for the tool and/or motivation to get him and keep him on track (Sylvan, bribes, punishments, at school tutoring, going on line to his school, etc) When it is something he is interested in (diving), it is amazing what he can achieve.

That's kind of where we were. The change in our kid was absolutely amazing when we took her off the meds. It was summer after 7th grade. She went from being a kind of down, negative kid who had trouble getting along with other kids in school, to being a sunny, happy one. It honestly seemed like we suddenly had Mary Sunshine living in our house. It's evened out a bit, she gets a little crabby occasionally (mostly monthly), but she's still a much happier kid. We did get the Strattera when 8th grade started, and it had an immediate negative effect on her too. She takes high quality salmon oil twice a day now, but that's it. We're lucky she's not the hyperactive type, I think.

Um, I think that's called "gifted". It's just a fantasy that gifted kids are naturally high achievers. They have to be engaged, or it's just no go. And doing something over, or even editing it? You can just forget that! Matt will just have to find something to study that is as interesting to him as diving. Something highly stimulating (like flying for the Air Force?). I know he wants to do that, so when he puts the equation together that his grades and that dream are related, you might see some smoke. But he's the one that will have to make the connection.

Sadly, most teens can't see further than their nose. Had to add that. Anyone else notice that?

My nephew is still in the hospital, still touch and go. His sister, who will be 13 in a few months, is so over it. She was scared the first night, when she was at the hospital too, but now she's mad because her parents won't let her go hang out with her friends, shuttling her back and forth, status quo. After all, it's her Fall break. Sounds typical, no?

Oh, that's super cute! I want one! Not that we need another TV. Hey, maybe I could use it for a bribe!

Here's my story that I posted on the budget board:

Well, I went to the mall. I had called ahead, had them hold one. Verified the item number (twice) and when I got there there was no TV--and NOTHING being held for me-- and no one that would admit to having talked to me. I ended up with the department manager, and then the store manager. No one could get me the TV. I figured they were sold out, but now the big beef was that somone told me they HAD them in stock and told me they were HOLDING one for me. So I drove 45 minutes for nothing. The guy wanted to do more checking, and my kids were starving, so he took my cell phone number. When I got the call, he basically said what I"m reading here....price mistake, not honoring anything, etc etc. I said OK, but they need to look into who it was who told me the WRONG info and who lied about holding anything for me (wasn't even holding the small one)

I wish they would have offered me the smaller one for $56. I'd have taken that at that price. Maybe I should call them and see. (some of the budget board ppl were offered the smaller 13 inch TV for 50% off)

But I do NOT want to go back to the mall!

:rotfl2: And maybe I should get that back from my friends and use that as a reward. "hey guys, you get to go in the crate if you finish all of your schoolwork!"

That's crummy. They owed you something for that trip!

I think their web guy needs a demotion.

They probably gave him something that said: new price 120.00 SAVE 29.97 and he flip-flopped the numbers. You think he'd be smart enough to think (and question) a 19 inch TV being sold for $30!! Either that or he put the price in and then bought them all himself!

Hello!

Just doing my weekly check in.............Gym and school have kept me pretty busy. We're going to take our Jet-ski out tomorrow. Not too many more weekends I'm afraid, for that. Once the gulf starts cooling off, Kelly and I don't ride. (Remember, I keep our pool at 90.)

Didn't go back and read all the post. Hope I didn't miss much.
Looking forward to seeing Scoopie soon! Hope the thought of 21 six year olds does not scare him!

Great school... and right down the road from us!

When I taught marketing at the state-run tech. college in NH, I had a student who still had his IEP in college (in a state school, they can carry over from high school.)... he had lots of provisions for test-taking, yet his research papers that he did for me were phenomenally detailed!!! (But it would take him 5 hours to finish a 90 minute exam.)

Just heard from my SIL, my nephew was released today and is home. Now he wants to go to a restaurant for a friend's birthday party tonight. Guess he's feeling better.

Got a call from Houston a while ago too. They were at the Renn Fair. Monica, they didn't take the lap top. Kevin said it's huge, there's lots to eat, and Alicia wants to buy a wench costume. Sounds like fun. They're getting along great with the baby, she wanted to leave with them last night.
