My DH's family is coming tomorrow for a Christmas get together. He offered to go to the store to get the few items we needed for the shindig. I know he is just trying to get out of cleaning, but I said fine and made a list.

The list said:
little wieners (for appetizers in the crock pot)
1 bag of tortilla chips
juice
soda
laundry detergent
cat food
pan for the turkey to cook in
apple pie
cherry pie
couple cans of soup

He bought everything on the list plus some toothpaste. Guess how much he spent?

$76!!!:scared1::scared1::scared1:

The list said:
little wieners (for appetizers in the crock pot) $4
1 bag of tortilla chips - $4
juice - $4
soda - $7
laundry detergent - $12
cat food - $5
pan for the turkey to cook in - $3
apple pie- $10
cherry pie - $10
couple cans of soup - $3

He bought everything on the list plus some toothpaste $4. Guess how much he spent?

I guessed and it's difficult without knowing sizes and quantities. Looks like I am not too far off. $66 plus tax in RI is $70. Guess your better off doing it yourself next time...

I'm very lucky that my husband does almost all of our grocery shopping. Lucky enough to bite my tongue most of the time when he spends a little too much or gets the wrong item. However, when he bought apples that were over $4 a pound and paid $8 for one melon (either a cantaloupe or a honeydew) I had to complain. Yikes!!!

Why my DH does not get to grocery shop...

I suppose that I'm missing your point. You sent your husband out to pick up groceries. He stuck to the list that you provided. Why are you complaining? Did he forget to use the store card and coupons that you gave him?

It took a while but I finally taught my husband what we buy brand specific and what we buy based on sale. Now when I send him to the store with a list he will buy what is on sale for the item I want instead of buying the first bag of tortilla chips he came across.

Did you tell him not to spend a certain amount? Looking at your list, $75 looks about what all that would cost me.

At least he bought everything on the list. When I send my husband to the store he calls me every few minutes and even if I know he is standing right in front of the product I want and describe the exact location, he usually still doesn't find it, it's amazing.
Last week he honestly told me that the store had run out of yoghurt (which I'm pretty sure has never happened in the history of grocery stores).

My hubby tries to call me from the store however, there isn't always great reception there. I wrote on the list to get tin foil and he came back with a foil pan for some reason. He also gets trapped into those 2/$3.00 things and will come home with more than I anticipated. I tell him a set limit and give him coupons before he goes now so there is no confusion lol

Yeahhhhhh, my husband does the shopping for us. I don't see the problem!!!

Ugh, you know what I HATE HATE HATE???

I hate that they expect me to know everything at the check-out. I don't grocery shop very often so I don't know that you need to hit the payment card reader 3 times at one store and twice at another. OR which phone number goes with what loyalty card. I don't care to know, just give me my stuff!

When I saw your title, I thought he bought something else that he thought you should serve.:confused3

What did you expect it to cost? The pan could have been reusable and cost $$ or a disposable aluminum on that is a few dollars.

I'm the opposite, I hate when they tell me what to do when I already know what to do and am doing it.

The pies are the items that seem high to me-- but the cat food is only about 1/4 of what I pay for a bag at the pet store.

This is my DH to a T !!! There is something about him and the grocery store....sent him out for some basmati rice for a last minute casserole Sunday and he returns with a $7 bag:faint: Plus over $50 of other stuff he "wanted". I was in a big hurry so had to use it. At least I have a whole lot left over and it takes only about 15 minutes to cook so if I serve it once or twice a week for the next 2 months I can maybe use it up and I guess get my money' s worth:goodvibes

Just sent him out for a jar of pesto and a prescription to refill and gave him very specific instructions so we will see how he does:)

It would take me an hour or so to shower and look "presentable" enough to go out but I need to plan better so he does not step foot in a grocery store!!!

Around her I pay $10 or more for a good pie. I recently bought three pies and paid $35. The cheaper ones are all just sugar syrups.

I made an apple pie for Christmas and it cost me close to $10.

I'm just wondering how you could have paid less? Did your husband buy national brands when you usually buy store brands? Laundry soap could be a small $4 generic or a $20 jumbo size Tide. A couple cans of soup could be two for your family but when my husband buys soups to bring to lunch he usually buys 6 or 8 at a time. I just don't see $76 as high for everything he got.

Ditto, I did an estimate of what I would spend on the items on your list and came out around $70 before tax. I bought a cake and apple pie from wegman's for christmas eve dinner - the cake was $20 (large ultimate white cake) and the pie was $12.

Seriously? I guess stuff where you live is waaaaaaay more expensive than here. I could have bought an entire weeks worth of groceries for $50 w/o using coupons including several cuts of meat. My budget for the next 2 weeks of food is $120. He spent over half of that on "party supplies" (minus the detergent and cat food). BTW, I didn't "send him out", he offered to go so he could get out of cleaning the house for HIS family that is coming to visit. I guess we are eating ramen noodles and PB until I get paid again. Hope his family enjoys the party.

Here's what I would pay= 41.28 plust tax:

The list said:

cat food- 4.99
pan for the turkey to cook in- 3.00

OK. Here goes.

little wieners (for appetizers in the crock pot) Him- 3 bags @ $3 each ($9), Me- 1 bag @ $3
1 bag of tortilla chips Him- $4 brand name Me- $2 store brand
juice Him-$4 brand name AND Hawaiian punch $4, Me-$3 store brand juice
soda Him- 3/$5 bought 4 ($6.67), Me- I would have walked away if it cost more than $1.25/ each
laundry detergent Him- $6 regular size Purex, $4 medium bottle of bleach, Me- $3 detergent, no bleach
cat food Him- $12 big bag name brand, Me- $9-10 big bag of the brand we always buy and is the only thing our cats eat anyway
pan for the turkey to cook in Him- $3 bought 2 ($6), Me- $3 only 1
apple pieThese are frozen pies, not deli or anything. Him- $6, Me- $5 or I walk away
cherry pieHim- $6, Me-$5 or I walk away
couple cans of soupHim- 6 cans at 3/$5 ($10) Me- OK I agree with this price, but I prob would have only bought 3

My total would have been $46 plus tax. And, yes, those are regular not on super sale prices for our area.
