2016 Destash - The more things you own, the more they own you

Jumping in here - we need to declutter! I meant to do the kids toys before Christmas came around and they got more toys, but of course time got away from me and it didn't happen. I did get the pantry cleaned out over the holidays, though. My MIL has a frustrating habit of picking up "treats" for us when she sees them on deep sale at her supermarket - things like cake/cookie mixes, Nutella, etc. - and then we end up with more than we could ever reasonably use and it fills up the pantry. I threw away several unopened things that had been expired for nearly a year, and donated most of what was still good. Just kept some boxes of brownie mix for us since that's an easy thing to bring in for school parties.

This weekend I am pulling together a bunch of things and listing them on eBay. I got a promotion in my e-mail to get a $50 coupon if you sell 4 items by the end of this month, but they have to be listed by the 18th. I want to sell things anyway and a $50 eBay coupon would be a nice bonus.

Cleaned out my freezers last night, started the fridge and the pantry.

Making a menu off what we have. Things are slim until next Friday.

2 hours later the bathroom is clean. Found 2 empty body wash bottles from the boys, ergh.
Rearranged the cabinet under the sink a bit and DH's shaving stuff and hair stuff. He has more things than I do!! LOL

This afternoon I'm working on the pantry.
New
I am doing the same thing.
I love strawberry picking and I have a lot of frozen strawberries. Last night I thawed a package, and I made a strawberry torte. I tend to forget what is down in our freezer, so I told my husband we have to make something from the freezer every day.

Something smells in our pantry. I found some herbs opened and I think it was that, but we need to clean that out too.

Jumping in too. We've cleaned out the freezer and fridge (yay!) and working to eat up what we have. This weekend I have a mission to finally go through the clutter in our dumping ground --er, dining room! I need to reclaim that room already. Future goals include going through our books (including the kids' books) to see what we can donate or even store (like old board books or picture books), sorting through the kids clothes to pass on what we can, and cleaning the basement storeroom to see what we can part with. The kids are jonesing for another garage sale. I am not as much of a fan but it is such an incentive for the kids to part with toys and clean out their stuff that it might be worth it. Probably see if we can do that right when they get out of school to figure out what we could sell. I'd love to get rid of DS's bed set (it's a huge clubhouse bed) and get a different one in that fits better in his room and isn't so big but as DH wisely points out, we might as well postpone that cost while we can.

Good point about the pantry -- I do need to sort through all of that too and get rid of things we aren't using or things that are expired.

thanks ya'll! I love being a clutter-free zone and having things simple. We have 5 here and although it's not "small", it's definitely too small for 5. I've started the great haul but we're moving in March so I'll definitely be able to get it all out then. oh man is that going to feel AWESOME! :) I'm really excited about that because like you said "the great shuffle" doesn't allow you to REALLY see what you have...but: when putting it in boxes, HA! Now, THAT is decluttering!

What are some of ya'lls fav tips? I use pinterest a lot. There is so much on there though. I tend to use those tips randomly. I like to do room to room but it seems the day takes longer then of course it never gets finished because it's 7 pm with no dinner fixed, kids screaming, and 2 rooms left undone...by then, the "great shuffle" kicks in and the WHOLE HOUSE is a MESS again! UGH! How do some do it?

A few questions:
1- What's your favorite hiding spot?
2- What do you hide, that you KNOW is useless, but you can NOT seem to give it up & toss it out?
3- How do you just "let go" of the things that mean so much (kids drawings) but really need to go?

I have thrown out tons (or else I'd be made of paper)...but there's still a whole box full...i know i'll just miss them when they're gone...THE KIDS- NOT the paper LOL!

**You guys rock BTW!

LASTLY- MOVING TIPS!!!!

please give me some!

I move more often then I care to admit so I'm pretty much a pro now. Start early!!!! I tend to pack up items I don't need often, you know the ones on the high shelf? And of course ask yourself; do I still like the item? Do I need it? Do I really want to pack this and then unpack it?

I swear each move I get rid of at least a small box of kitchen items plus a box or two of miscellaneous items.

I label each box with the specific room and then an additional label with what is in the box. Group like items together by where you want to store them, easier to unpack.

If it's in your budget, hire movers! Best $300 I've ever spent! If you're not hiring movers, be sure to call and schedule a moving truck if you're renting one.

Purge early and often before moving!

I haven't accomplished much except for gluing things. I have a couple of deadlines to work towards, that will help a lot. Tomorrow, I think I am going to tackle the sink cabinet in the kitchen. It is jammed packed full and I have no clue what is in there.

So, I ran out of my usual Sams Club Dove body wash this morning and needed some soap or something from my stash of hotel samples. I found several bars of Disney H20 soap in a plastic bin of such items and...I'm not buying anymore "soap" to wash myself until I use up all the samples in said bin. Destashing and saving money simultaneously. Perfect.

I went through and purged the freezer. I still had leftover turkey and ham in there for Thanksgivng 2014. There is so much space in there now. I did realize I was out of chicken and ground beef so I restocked today. Andi put 4 bags out for Purple Heart. I had cleaned up all of DS's Lego since my 18 month old niece was visiting but once DS got home instead of the family room being cluttered with Lego, it's now Hot Wheels. Ugh, lots more to do with 4600 sq ft and a basement.

YES! Thanks :) those are great tips! I don't care to admit my number either you would think I'd be a pro...but...I still hate it. I usually bride guys and girls with beer and pizza. LOL...they are my "movers" hahahaha! #ITWORKS LOL

Not sure that I am exactly an authority on having LESS JUNK or moving.... but I'll give this a go!

A few questions:
1- What's your favorite hiding spot?

My closet (for short term hiding.... like "company-will-be-here-in-an-hour" kind of hiding) and basement (for "I-don't-know-what-to-do-with-it-but-I-can't-make-myself-part-with-it-right-now" hiding). But I also have a large finished room (considered the "playroom") over the garage that has sadly become storage for my WW stock (I work for them at a travel location where I do not have a stock room) and for DD's college overflow (she has spent time in dorms, in apartments, and a semester abroad, so she has a wide assortment of stuff that she may or may not need during any given semester!). It isn't tragic because it is out of the way and out of sight and my kids are grown, so no need to "play".... but it has become WAY to easy to not make the decision to part with anything because there always seems to be room to put it somewhere!

2- What do you hide, that you KNOW is useless, but you can NOT seem to give it up & toss it out?

WAAAYYYY too much! Mostly sentimental keepsakes or thinks that have value (or at least perceived value to me) that I haven't bothered to take the time to sell. The list of actual items is much too embarrassing to list here... but I will say we have lived in our house for 22 years now and there are a few items in the junk drawer that have probably been there for the full 22 years!!!!!!!!!! Okay... I'll confess one item..... I have an antique bone-handled 3 tine fork in there..... I have a sentimental attachment to a MEMORY that connects to the fork.....but I can have the MEMORY without the FORK, right???

3- How do you just "let go" of the things that mean so much (kids drawings) but really need to go?

Photographs and scans.... honestly. I don't need EVERY paper that my kiddo colored in preschool.... but maybe the one from the first day and one from the last day.... or a special card they made or the first time they wrote their name by themselves. When my children were attending preschool I DID make the mistake of saving every single solitary paper..... in date order, in binders and boxes. But that just gets to be TOO MUCH! Especially when the projects start to be 3-d...... like the indian tom-tom made from a large coffee can or the Thanksgiving turkey made from paper grocery bags or the Nativity manger made from a clementine box. Time to take a picture (with or without the child) and toss the item (after it has graced your dining room or art gallery for an acceptable amount of time, of course!). I only really keep the truly special pieces of paper .... and they go into the scrapbooks or the small projects (like Christmas ornaments that are easily stored). I scan or photograph the "semi-special" stuff.... and ditch the rest. Unless your child is going to be the next Walt Disney, there will NEVER be a museum in their honor looking for this stuff and you will NOT be doing your child a favor by leaving it for them to deal with after you are gone! (Or foisting it upon them when they move out!!)
BTW, this may be easier for me to say now that my children are grown (20 y/o DD and days-away-from-18 y/o DS).

DD did me a favor by doing her very first crayon drawing on her highchair tray instead of on the paper..... so there was no way to save it other than a photograph! And DS did me a favor by writing his name (without help) by himself for the first time on the playroom chalkboard..... again, no way to save it other than a photograph!

LASTLY- MOVING TIPS!!!!

please give me some!

Look at everything before you put it in a box and think...."do I want to pay someone $20/hr to pick this up and move it to my new home?" "What is the worst thing that would happen if I arrived at my new home without this?" "How much would it cost me to replace this if I tossed it now and later decided I needed it?"

Easy to do with can openers and your 20th pair of shoes.... not so easy to do with sentimental stuff and special stuff. But do NOT pay some guy with muscles $20 to move that HORRIBLY ugly ceramic figurine that your favorite aunt gave you for a wedding gift 15 years ago. She will (probably) never know it is gone, she probably doesn't even remember giving it to you, and she would NEVER intend for it to be a burden. Take a picture of it if you feel you must, and let it go! (And yes, you can sing the song while letting the stuff go if you would like!).

Every item you put in a box will cost you money (in some way) to move..... make sure it is worth the cost..............P

I found several bars of Disney H20 soap in a plastic bin of such items and...I'm not buying anymore "soap" to wash myself until I use up all the samples in said bin. Destashing and saving money simultaneously. Perfect.

I did that a while ago and I am STILL trying to get through the soap and shampoo.... and I will NEVER get through the lotions (primarily because I only use an all-natural locally made lotion now). With the hotel shampoos, I emptied them all into a larger shampoo bottle and tossed all of the little bottles. With the soap, I opened the ones that were pretty (like with Mickey on them) and put them in a big glass jar in my bathroom. They can look nice there until I use them! But I cannot seem to break myself of the habit of bringing home hotel soap and shampoo....but I've stopped bringing home the lotions, the shower caps, and the shoeshine kits. Why waste them? .............P

I went through my cupboard before Christmas and gathered all of the soaps, shampoos, conditioners and lotions and took them, and my destashed winter clothing/coats to the local My Sisters Place, which is a drop in centre for homeless women. They were thrilled. The local abused women's shelter love those, too. I did keep my DCL H2O products, and they went into the girls' (and my mom's) stockings at Christmas.

Nice reminder! I did try to donate the small lotion bottles to my local food pantry (here in my small town), but they didn't want them. I've thought about the idea of making blessings bags to hand out when I see pan-handlers, but my DH is afraid that it would be dangerous. I found a local woman who was filling gently used purses and pocketbooks with supplies (lotion, tissues, chapstick, snack bars) to hand out at a women's shelter in a nearby city and I'm considering making a box up to bring to her................P

Got the pantry done, it looks so pretty!! I also have 2 pages worth of stuff in there. So next up is taking the freezer/fridge list and the pantry list and combining them into meals.
Next up is tackling taxes. My appt is in 2 weeks and I need to get moving.

Don't you love that? Whenever I organize something and I think it is pretty I keep going back to it and just staring at it. Sometimes I make my family members stare at it too! It makes you feel soooo good to have a complete project.

Well, I've been slacking, big time, but still managed to get rid of 6 pairs of pants, 2 sweat shirts and a shirt. I found a bunch of clothes in the basement that I had forgotten about. I should have probably just tossed them without even trying them on, but they looked like new, and I figured it might keep me from going out to buy some new clothes.
In the meantime, DH decided to get in on the action and went through the pantry - found several boxes and cans that were expired, so he tossed them and organized the rest. :) Hooray for teamwork!
