2011 Wine & Dine Halloween 5k Fun Run

I can't figure out where they're having us run in the back of the park between Conservation Station and Kilimanjaro. Is there even a pathway back there? Doesn't look like it on the map. Maybe they figure a herd of wild animals chasing behind would get us all moving out of the park in a hurry :)

I think we run backstage starting at the gate near where DeVine hangs around.

question for the stroller division registration......it says $55 per participant.....are they including the child in the stroller as a participant? so I'm paying $55 for me to push the stroller, and $55 for DS to sit in it??

another question......and I think I answered my 1st question.

the stroller division comes with 2 finisher medals ( I assume 1 for the parent and 1 for the child) but 1 t-shirt. Can you purchase more t-shirts at the expo?

I registered for the stroller division and my understanding is the $55 covers me and my stroller and whoever's in it! Not sure about purchasing another t-shirt but I'm assuming if Disney sees an opportunity to sell something else, they will.

I do have a couple of questions myself:

1. I know I have to "attend the Disney Health & Fitness Expo for my race number and packet pick-up." But by "attend" do they mean you have to like be there for any extended period of time or can I just stop by there to pick it up? We are planning on doing AK on Friday 9/30 and having an early dinner at Boma, then swinging by the expo on the way back to the hotel to get the packet.

Also, my best friend, who will be with me but isn't participating in the races, is a fitness trainer and is interested in at least checking out the expo briefly. Is there a charge to get in?

2. As far as the 5K goes, can my best friend and her 7yo son be there to cheer me on? I was hoping so. Since AK won't be open during the race, I'm hoping a park ticket isn't required for them to get in to cheer me on (if they're even allowed to). We have base tickets and we're going to be going to EPCOT later that day, so I didn't want her to have to use her ticket that day for AK. Not sure how that works. And it may all be moot anyway if they're not allowed to be there.

Thanks for any replies! :goodvibes And good luck to everyone! This is my first 5K. I had a baby back in September (who will be "strollering" the race with me) so this was my motivation to get back into shape. I'm on week 4 of the Couch to 5K program and so far, so good! :thumbsup2

This is a link to the 5k course with a little more detail. From the map options box in the upper left, turn on the Satellite view for a photo look and the “open road’ view for a little more park detail.

Quite a few shirts are available, though no official race shirts. And yes, the medals are for the pusher and the rider.

It takes about 20-30 minutes from parking to driving off to pick up a packet. NOTE – historically, you can pick up your 5k bib and shirt at the race on race morning. The reasoning is that the 5k attempts to draw locals in and most, if not all 5ks allow bib pick up on race morning. Keep an eye out for the race day instructions that will come out in September. That will be the cue that Disney is continuing to allow 5k packet pickup on race day (for half runner’ s no you must go to expo).
Also, my best friend, who will be with me but isn't participating in the races, is a fitness trainer and is interested in at least checking out the expo briefly. Is there a charge to get in?
No – free. They haven’t figured out how to charge a fee for a required event.

No, the only viewing spots are at the start and finish. If they are fast, they could cut over towards the park entrance once you start and watch you pass. There is no entry into the park other than runners.

Thanks so much for the info! Planning all this with a 13-month-old is such a headache but I know we'll have a blast.

Hi everyone:)

My friends and I are doing the 5k so excited:) I'm also doing the 1/2 it will be my first..nervous. My friends said I'm on my own for that one, lol

Since we're staying at the Poly, do you think our best bet is to grab a taxi over to a host hotel and catch a bus from there? I don't really want to rely on a cab to get us to the correct drop off ahead of the race.

For the 5k just have the cab take you to the AK parking lot. There will be little delay, especially if you plan on arriving in the 6:-6:15 range. That will speed you up a lot and probably not cost much of any extra.

For the return, grab a regular Disney bus to the Poly - it may take a few moments as you will be on the leading edge of the bus traffic coming to the AK. Park opens at 9 on race day so bus traffic should pick up in the 8:15 range.

Or take an event bus to a host resort.

If you are talking about the half there is a bus from Epcot (I am pretty sure the Wonder Lot) to the race start. I would take the monorail from the Poly to Epcot and jump on the bus personally but if you are more comfortable with the taxi to WWoS go with it.

You'd be surprised how many jogging strollers dashed past us in February, Frank.

I hope so! This is my first 5K and I'm training with the Couch to 5K program. I doubt I'll run the whole thing but I'm planning on trying to run as much of it as I can.

A couple of questions from this newbie:

1. I've read this entire thread and I read something about a bag check. I will have my then-13-month-old with me (hence the stroller) and I'm assuming we will be there for a 2-3 hours (not sure how long the race will actually take plus arrival time and lingering afterwards) so that means I'll need stuff for him (diapers, wipes, etc.). I have what I call my "abbreviated diaper bag" that is way smaller than my normal one and it will fit in the storage basket under the seat of my jogging stroller. Are we allowed to have that with us or will I have to check that? Also, can I have a water bottle with me or are those allowed on the course?

2. We will have a car (I'm from Georgia and, thank goodness, we can drive there) so I'm planning on just driving to the race myself. How is parking? From the map it looks like some of the race is in the parking lot, so will there be parking there? I'm assuming so since there will be some locals there.

Thanks...I'm sure more questions will pop up between now and October 1st!

Actually the bag check is a half marathon item... the 5 k does not have a bag check. I am sure that as long as you are self contained as you describe you will have no issue with your stuff.

Yes, you can bring a water bottle with you. Note that there will be water stops around mile 1 and 2 of the race, also.

Parking is a snap. Be sure to arrive within the transportation window (I think 5:00 to 6:30). If later you may not be able to enter the parking lot and will have missed the race. Your car will serve as a nice waiting shelter between arrival and when you start to meander over to the start.

Hello all! I have decided to take the plunge and register for the 5K! My husband is doing the 1/2 so I figured I should do something. I am NOT a runner, but I am pretty active. ( Taekwondo & Yoga). Can anyone recommend a good training program?

Lots of people seem to like the "Couch to 5K" program. It combines walking with intervals of jogging to build you up slowly. I am walking this race because my mom and kids are doing it along with my husband and I. My girls are 10 and almost 8 and we are walking 5 mornings a week about 2-2.5 miles/day to get them mentally/physically ready for the walk. They are both athletic kids, but 3.1 miles is a long way for those little legs, so I want to build up their stamina, especially since we are doing the 5K on the last full day of our trip. So far my 10 yo thinks the walking is fun, but my youngest thinks I'm the meanest mom ever on summer vacation.

Thanks! How fun to have this experience with your girls. We are leaving the kids at home for this one, but if all goes well I hope to bring them some day. I am sure your youngest will forgive you once the even gets here. :rotfl:

My husband and niece are running the 1/2 marathon and I am running the 5K with a bunch of WONDERFUL people I have met here on the DIS! We have been training with the C25K Program. It is a great program!! The best is to download some podcasts with the music and voice that tells you when to run/when to walk. Our plan is to go to MNSSHP on Friday night and then the races are Saturday- so I think we are going to be tired, but when are you not tired in Disney!? We are so excited!!

My family and I will be at the MNSSHP on Friday and doing the race on Saturday morning as well. Great minds think alike I guess!!
