2011 Destashing Thread

Who wants to give me tips on how to get rid of some stuff? Sometimes I feel like a mini-hoarder LOL. Not really, but a lot of the time I feel attached for some reason to almost everything I own and have a hard time getting rid of it :confused3

What types of stuff do you need help getting rid of? I bet we can help!

Also, see if your library has a copy of or better yet an audio book of "It's all too much' by Peter Walsh.

Well I dropped two more books off to the library for donation (this is working great as I read two books I bring them to the lib afterwards) I am slowly working through my backlog of books. At this rate I have enough books to last until Feb 2013!!!:rotfl2:

Put some clothes away and got rid of 2 ratty t-shirts, a pair of jeans, and a pair of ratty shorts.

Also, disposed of a grocery bag of old receipts, bills, instruction manuals, and such that were no longer needed:banana::banana::banana:

Slow going here but progressing none the less:goodvibes

While making an inventory sheet of my books, I decided there were an additional 8 novels that I did not want any longer (I really don't think I would reread them), so those will be going bye bye later today!!!:banana:
Of course these were only the ones on my sun porch!!!

While orgnizing my home office, I have found enough pens, pencils, highlighters, notepads, and sticky notes to run a small corporation.:rolleyes1

I will no longer need to buy any of the above items for a very long time (I would guess a couple of years at least)!!!:rotfl2:

I've slowed down considerably on the destashing (bad me!) but I listed 68 things on Amazon Marketplace (video games, books, dvds, cds) and this week I sold five making a profit of about $50, so I'll take that!

Haven't checked in on this thread since the beginning of January, and while I haven't done too much in the way of de-stashing my house, I have let go of nearly 20 pounds from my body .

As incentive to keep on going, I will be donating clothes as I grow out of them rather than keeping a "just in case I gain it back" section in the closet.

Now that I think of it, I have de-stashed a lot of junk from my pantry and fridge - that counts, right :confused3.

Absolutely it counts, and good for you on the weight loss! How did you do it?

I am actively (but very slowly) losing weight so I have been allowing myself to keep some 'wish' clothes but when I got them all in one place there was more than I thought- 3 trash bags full! I pared them down to less than one bag of things I just can't part with and am currently sorting the rest into what I'm going to take to the consignment store and what goes to goodwill.

I'm still working on shredding old papers, creditcard statements, creditcard offers. I'm finding bills from 2000 and a few papers from 13 years ago. I even found my 7th grade school I.D. I was 12 at the time and I'll be 39 in July-lol!
I just had dd remove one huge trash bag of shredded paper and one huge black trash bag of trash, junk paper, junk mailers etc.

Last night I cleaned out my dining curio cabinet. I must have found 6-8 old phone chargers, stack of old bills/papers, a folder with my biology classwork and note from 8 years ago and a few rolls of 35mm film rolls that need to be developed.

My big issue is my spare room. Its the room where i've been shredding. Its also dd's junk room and my craft room. DD12 had a hige pile of old clothes that i folded and put into a tub. My goal is to maybe sell it in big lots on craigs list or have a yardsale in 2 1/2 weeks. If it sells on craigs list i know i can make more money. Anything that doesnt sell , we will donate.

craftroom: I have a table that holds my sizzix machine, and some otherstuff but its also where junk ends up piling up. I'm thinking of taking it out. The closet is another hot mess. I have a huge cabinet in there and the goal is to put as much craft stuff in there-organized of course-lol!

I have a bunch of new mason jar that i never used. What should i do with those. The plan was to make scented jars and give as gifts. The jars are taking up a lot of space.

so if i get in gear then by the middle of march I will eliminate 2-3 large trash bags of clothes.

I also have some old college books from about 8-10 years ago. Is there a place to sell those or should i just toss them or donate?

Another 4 bags of stuff ready to go to goodwill. This was misc stuff from one of my bedroom closets. I also want to try to go through a container of clothes.

I don't know if you can wait a few months but if you wait til summer I bet there will be a market for them on craigslist when people are canning.

Checking in weekly as I promised myself, but unfortunately nothing to report :sad2: Today I was doing taxes all morning, and went shopping this afternoon, and opted to take this evening for myself.
Tomorrow need to go get shoes for DH & DS, haircuts, and go to a bday party so I doubt I'll get to much. I am going to try to shred a bag of stuff in the spare room - at least if I get to that I'll feel like I got SOMETHING accomplished:thumbsup2

I would look for a free shredding event. Some of the local banks, malls, and towns offer them once in a while. Might save you tons of time spent shredding. Good luck!

Yes! We did this last April and it was wonderful.

Well I finally finished the 1st tub of shredding, plus a few estras I found in my drawer , and the stuff i got in the mail this week. I still have another tub so maybe i will have to look for a shredding event. It would cut back on a ton of time . Dh also has his own stuff to shred. I'm on my 3rd shredder in the last 3-5 years.
-at shredding events , do they shred your stuff right infront of you??? If so it would work. I just dont want to loeave my stuff and they shredd it later- no way!

Well I got rid of another 2 grocery size bag of papers. I also got dd to get rid of some coloring books and art supplies.

For some reason I can't clean and get rid of stuff in my craftroom until its clean-weird i know.

I'm feeling great getting rid of the paper clutter. I'm making dd clean her room but she';s not happy. Dh even got up and started fixing the shower faucet in the bathroom. He fixed it then shined it all up. Well maybe if I keep this up the others will follow.

Our shredding event was in front of us. It was a huge truck that they ran right in front of you and there was also a video camera that was right by where the stuff was actually being shredded so you could see your stuff be torn to bits right there in front of you. We signed up for optoutprescreen.com (I think it was?) and that really cut down on mail that needed to be shredded too.

I'm following Weight Watchers and have been losing steadily since the new year.

One of my New Year's Resolutions is to only buy clothes that fit. Over the years I have wasted so much money on clothes that "almost fit" and I never wore. By now, most of them are outdated or just don't fit the way they should.

I'm done for the nite but didnt finish my craftroom:sad2: I got rid of another 4-5 grocery size bags of junk and trash and i shredd a few more things that i found.

I also had dhremove a shoe rack and 3 drawer plastic container from my craftroom. I also have a bag of new items to give away new frames, new easles for pictures or tile holder, ceramic figurines simple new wall decorations.

I also have about home interior items like....
-3 large framed pictures
-2 medium framed pictures
-2 small framed pictures
-pair of gold scones

I'm going to try and sell these on craiglist but not sure how to price.
I'll have to finish the room another day or lil here and there.

This wan't a reply to me but I too don't know what to keep and what to save! Well beyond the first level of purging that I've already done. Still too much stuff, mostly memorabilia and kids' toys and stuff they *might* want their kids to have or I might want *someday* with Gkids. :confused3
(ETA) I know you /others have addressed this in the past but I STILL have a tough time. Wish y'all could come over and look at everything with fresh eyes!!

Just curious about that, because I coundn't helping noticing it said 405 am !:scared1: And yet I can relate! :lmao:
(unless my time thingy is wrong! Or maybe you're on the west coast, but w/e, I still can really relate!!!!)

If I'm motivated and on a roll ;) I just keep going and going and going, regardless of time! (wheres the energizer bunny icon when I need it?! ;) )

I usually see one about 2x a year, but haven't seen or heard it advertised. I did it last year, but as of right now, I only have about 1 big shopping bag full of stuff so it's manageable if I can't find a shredder event. but thanks for the idea!

If the kids are old enough, ask them what they might want to keep. Don't keep more than you have room to. (instead of keeping what you want and then trying to make it fit.) Take pictures if they will serve as a memory just as well as the item itself. You might get 4 totes of a size you can store and have each child put what they want in it.

DH and I were trying on clothes for our cruise in April (61 days left  ) and destashed 2 VERY full trash bags and threw a few pieces away.

A few odds and ends of things to donate as well. :surfweb:

Keep up the good work all :thumbsup2
