Mary,

Have you tried the Oreo's with chocolate filling? I'm not a big Oreo cookie eater, but I sure do like the ones with chocolate filling.

Carol

I don't really care for the chocolate ones, or the peanut butter ones. :crazy2: I'm afraid of the red ones, but I don't mind the spring colored blue and yellow ones.

OK, I was going to post a picture of some oreos... I went to their website...

When discussing the twentieth century, we often compare and contrast life from the year 1900 to the year 2000. We all realize that in the year 1900, people didn't have cars, couldn't fly in airplanes, and didn't have microwaves. Yet, there is another item that those in the year 1900 did not have and those in the year 2000 took for granted - Oreo cookies.

Most of us have grown up with Oreo cookies. There are photos of us with chocolaty remnants smeared across our faces. They've caused great disputes as to the best way to eat them - dunking them in milk or twisting off one side and eating the middle first. Besides eating them plain, there are recipes galore on how to use Oreos in cakes, milkshakes, and additional desserts. Oreos had become part of twentieth century culture.

Though most of us have spent a lifetime cherishing Oreo cookies, did you know that since their introduction in 1912, the Oreo cookie has become the best selling cookie in the U.S.?

Oreos Are Introduced

In 1898, several baking companies merged to form the National Biscuit Company (NaBisCo), the maker of Oreo cookies. By 1902, Nabisco created Barnum's Animal cookies and made them famous by selling them in a little box designed like a cage with a string attached (to hang on Christmas trees).

In 1912, Nabisco had a new idea for a cookie - two chocolate disks with a creme filling in between. The first Oreo cookie looked very similar to the Oreo cookie of today, with only a slight difference in the design on the chocolate disks.

The shape and design of the Oreo cookie didn't change much until Nabisco began selling various versions of the cookie. In 1975, Nabisco released their DOUBLE STUF Oreos. Nabisco continued to create variations:

1987 -- Fudge covered Oreos introduced
1991 -- Halloween Oreos introduced
1995 -- Christmas Oreos introduced

The Mysterious Name

So how did the Oreo get its name? The people at Nabisco aren't quite sure. Some believe that the cookie's name was taken from the French word for gold, "or" (the main color on early Oreo packages). Others claim the name stemmed from the shape of a hill-shaped test version; thus naming the cookie in Greek for mountain, "oreo." Still others believe the name is a combination of taking the "re" from "cream" and placing it between the two "o"s in "chocolate" - making "o-re-o." And still others believe that the cookie was named Oreo because it was short and easy to pronounce. No matter how it got named, over 362 billion Oreo cookies have been sold since it was first introduced in 1912, making it the best selling cookie of the 20th century.

I only eat oreos with while filling. The ones with blue or red filling creep me out.
Ooohh, and what about the ones with orange filling at Halloween. Those with colors are really weird. Emily had some orange ones last October and they left her tongue completely orange.

Not that I eat them today, but when I was pregnant with Cameron & on lock down in the hospital for the last 30 days, double stuffed oreos had just come out. Gary smuggled me a bag & I rationed them out and only had 1-2 when the cravings were really bad. I think that entire bag lasted me weeks.

Guess what Cameron's favorite cookies are still to this day!

I'm with Mary, give me the white filling. I never buy the colored.
And, aren't you the non-chocolate lover?????

I think that the Double Stuffed are the only Oreos to eat!! If you're going to eat them, you have to have double-stuffed.

Oy, David you are a trouble maker!!! Oreos, peeps, what's next? :rotfl2:

I can honestly say I've never eaten a peep before. They are just too wierd. I know lots of people only like them stale. Ooooh gross!!!

We like peeps! Just got a package last week of the orange flavored peep eggs. Yummy! It just wouldn't be Easter without peeps!

Of course, Amy, you would never eat anything that would change the color of your tongue......like maybe something nice and blue? :rotfl2: ;)

Right.....but I was pregnant at the time so all bets we're off. :teeth:

I also craved White Castle milk shakes and Fuddruckers hamburgers.

:confused3 :confused3

Your right, what would Easter be without peeps. I always put some in the kids baskets -- even though they don't eat them. It's kind of a tradition from my childhood.

Robin, when they get nice and stale, I'll send them down to you. :teeth:

Since the discussion is Easter candy, what about the Cadbury eggs? Those things just gross me out looking at them.

Many years ago, we had an egg hunt at my in-laws house. My step-daughter was maybe about 4 at the time. She picked one of those Cadbury eggs up she found on her hunt and stuck it into her pocket. Hours later, she remembered it and pulled it out to eat it. Apparently from the heat of the coat and her body, it melted into liquid. It was such a disgusting sight.

But, I couldn't stand them even before them.

My favorite Easter candy is malted milk balls. Even with the chocolate, they are one of my all time favorites.

I'm sure if I checked all the hiding places in our house, I'd find all sorts of Easter, Halloween, Christmas & Valentine's Day candy. It just doesn't get eaten around here. My kids are not that big into candy.

I've never liked the cadbury eggs. Malted milk eggs were a big favorite in our house as well as the chocolate marshallow eggs that came in egg cartons. An adult indulgence are the Fannie May buttercream eggs....yum!

Oohh, I used to LOVE Fuddruckers. Are they still around???

One more question?

Is it Jelly Bean's or Jelly Belly's?

For Christmas, my kids received this huge box of Jelly Belly's. There were some really strange flavors in there -- some of which went right into the garbage so no one made the mistake of eating them. Like jalapeno....who wants to eat a jelly bean that takes like a pepper? :confused3 The buttered popcorn was pretty bad too. But most of the others, they loved.

So, it will definately be jelly belly's in their basket! :thumbsup2

Isn't it amazing how the candies have migrated towards other holidays? My kids received bags of jelly beans, in orange & black, from our neighbor for Halloween. I see peeps for just about every occassion too.
