1. Has anyone recently reserved with Alamo at MCO and added a spouse with or without an additional charge. NOT COSTCO (awesome advice here but COSTCO is not an option for us)

2. Anyone had experience adding a spouse midway and what was charged (all contract days like Dining Plan) or just the days forward?

I now know that AVIS has the most flexibility - spouse does not need to go to counter. Their rates must have this build in because when you click from initial screen to final screen - rate jumps ~130+ whereas the other companies didn't do that. The other rates were what was quoted on the screen.

After reading through the corporate website - Alamo is very loosey-goosey about when, where and if they will charge for additional drivers. In my mind, that means be prepared to pay $15/day but hope for better.

I can't find any National rate that is reasonable - even when compared to potentially paying +$15/day (12 day rental) at Alamo for spouse. I don't understand how they stay in business at their rates.

To the last bit...National is used a lot by companies. My STBX has an amayyyyyyzing code that allows him to get a crazy low rate, and he’s allowed to use it for leisure as well. And it includes spouses and colleagues at no cost.

When I don’t want to pay the additional driver fee and I’m picking up the car, I’d just plan on driving. That’s what I do with my cousin.

And fwiw it looks like you can buy a Costco membership online, get your member number (which is needed for the rate), and get the card later. The member number email would show the membership and you could perhaps get the card in Florida. Even just for this purpose it seems it would save you money.

The Car Rental Co " National " is in business as it is a World wide Co. Not just a USA Co.

AND $ 15 a day for extra driver is a good rate .as compared to what you will Spend on " Snacks "

per person at the Parks .

The $15 is for Alamo. NATIONAL was more than double the Alamo, Budget and Avis rates.

LOl - I looked at it today. I can pay the extra 60 at Avis which doesn't even require the additional driver to appear at counter. DH and i typically don't fly together. I go ahead to run the errands. He is goong to Kennedy Space mid week so he has to drive.

You won't be able to add a spouse mid way with Alamo without going to the counter. The spouse has to be added at the start of the reservation because Alamo will want to see his/her license.
And Budget DOES require to see the additional person drivers license

Driver’s license requirements
At time of rental car pick-up in the U.S. or Canada, all drivers must present a valid, U.S.- or Canadian-issued driver's license in the driver’s name. If you are renting a Budget vehicle in the U.S. and are in possession of a Canadian driver’s license, you will be required to also present a valid passport in the driver’s name. In lieu of a passport and Canadian driver’s license, you may instead present an Enhanced Driver’s License in your name.

Can someone else drive a car that I rent?

Yes. An additional driver must be at least 25 years of age. Budget will check the additional drivers' license to ensure that it is valid. Budget will be unable to allow an additional driver if the driving history reveals any of the following issues:

  • invalid, suspended or revoked license
  • one or more convictions for reckless driving within 36 months
  • one DUI, DWI or DWAI conviction within 48 months
  • failure to report an accident/leaving the scene of accident within 36 months
  • possession of stolen vehicle or use of a vehicle in a crime
  • expired license
  • three or more convictions for moving violations within 24 months (including seatbelt violations)
  • three or more accidents within 36 months
  • other activities that suggest an unsatisfactory driving record.
Add drivers to your rental at the counter when you pick up your car. Drivers must be present with their required credentials to be added.

We have added him midway (at no charge). After he lands, we walked over to the counter together and had him added but there was no charge.
