If I recall, ST. Thomas has better shopping than ST. Maarten.
As for the shopping they will have a shopping guide on the cruise and that person will have a time where we can go to one of the theaters to get coupons for shopping and find out which of the ports has the best deals.
There are some great sightseeing and beach tours in both St Marteen and St Thomas.
For St Marteen we always book one of the excursions that include some beach time with snorkeling because my husband likes to snorkel. For St Thomas our favorite is The Screaming Eagle jet boat which you have to book early because it sells out quickly. Then we get tickets for tram sky ride to the top of St Thomas where there is a small cafe and souvenir shops. These we schedule and book before sailing when our booking window opens. These also allow time for shopping in both ports. Usually the best time to shop is early in the morning then take your goodies back to the ship and change to meet your shore excursion. At St Thomas we take dry clothes to change into because you get really wet on the jet boat and that way you are prepared for the day of shopping. St Thomas is a tendered port so it is better not to go back and forth to the ship if you can help it. Just pack a day bag. The shopping presentation will fill you in with the rest.
