10 Days in October: Argle-Bargle or Foofarah? UPDATED: POSTS #984 & 995!!!

Thursday, October 19th - A Food & Wine Pairing and the First of Many Brendas...

I am impressed with the menu, especially by the statement that the chef thinks it is "most delightful." Not exciting or exotic or flavorful but delightful. That is a bold statement, but if anyone can prove him wrong, I can. ;)

The servers are very efficient and are pouring wine and ice cold water for our drinking pleasure when the first course shows up.

DSC01085.jpg

Sauteed Shrimp served over Pasta tossed with a fresh Tomato Sauce with Kalamata Olives and Fresh Parmesan Cheese; paired with Merryvale Starmont Chardonnay.

Yummy!!! I love shrimp and I'm a big fan of pasta as long as the sauce is tomato-based and very light, like this one. I'm also very excited by the fact that the olives have been shunted off to the side and are barely contaminating the rest of my serving - I can't stand olives. This was a nice sized tasting portion and it paired really well with the Chardonnay. It might seem like an odd pairing considering that the prevaling wine wisdom says to pair tomato sauces with a lighter red wine, but the flavors of this dish were subtle and the wine really drew upon that. This was my favorite wine of the three we tried that afternoon.

I'd like to point out, too, that this was a very leisurely event - there was no rush to finish one course in order to move on to the next. And this would be a good time to mention that the couple who were seated with us were taking pictures of their food, too. Once I saw that I lost all photographic food inhibitions for the remainder of the trip.

And now, here comes course number two:

DSC01086.jpg

Paella; paired with Merryvale Caneros Pinot Noir.

I'm not as crazy about this dish as I was about the last one...for one thing I don't like clams, and for another overly spicy food and me don't mix (see Crohn's Disease, pain, bodily functions you don't discuss in polite company, and imminent vacation ruination). I did eat the shrimp and some of the chicken - I tried a bite of the chirzo sausage but it was just too spicy for me -and I even ate some of the rice but it was very thick and I don't really like rice that way. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Jay basically ended up with a second serving of paella. Everyone else at the table really enjoyed this, so while it was not to my taste, I think it's fair to say that it was still quite good. The wine was nice, too, but I'm not a big fan of reds - they tend to give me a headache.

You wanna hear something weird? The couple sitting with us are also a Jay and a Brenda...seriously. They live in Florida and are what I think of as F&W pilgrims - they come up for long weekends and attend all kinds of different events. They had been to a cooking event earlier in the day and told us so much about it that I wished we were signed up for one (maybe next year). They also do a lot of WDW dining and were able to offer us some great advice about the ADRs we had planned for the rest of our trip. They absolutely raved about Califorina Grill, which we were trying, and Jiko, which we were not.

And last but not least...course number three!!
DSC01087.jpg

Flourless Chocolate Cake with Dried Cherries, Fresh Figs, and Ganache; paired with Merryvale Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon.

This was a fantastic dessert - dense, moist, and full of a rich, dark chocolatey flavor (Jay did not get a second serving of dessert - I ate all of this baby!). Again, the wine was excellent, but I couldn't finish it - it was too strong and heavy for my delicate taste buds. ;)

This was a terrific F&W event as far as we were concerned. Granted, we didn't have anything to measure it against, but it was everything that we could have hoped it would be and we really thought it was money well spent. I guess the chef was right - the menu really was delightful! :thumbsup2

Before leaving we exchanged email addresses with our future-selves so that we could try to hook up the next time we're all in Orlando. They even offered to take us to some good spots off property (I really need to email them...I'm such a slacker). You know, I never, ever come across anyone named Brenda - it's like my mom named me and then the rest of the world said, "Thanks a lot lady, you ruined it for the rest of us." It was just very odd, but it was destined to become even more odd as the week progressed.

The event was over around 4:30PM and we decided that we'd had enough EPCOT for one day - we were full of good food and wine and it seemed like the logical thing to do at this point was to head back to SSR and get some time in the pool before heading over to the Adventurers Club. The sky was looking a bit threatening and it did rain just a little on the bus ride back to the resort but that was it - the skies cleared soon after and we had a nice sticky humid night ahead of us.

Oh, can I share one other silly thing with you before I move on to the AC? I can? Thanks - you guys are great!

During our world showcase wanderings today we ended up in Germany - they have lots of dark, air conditioned stores to poke around in and we dropped in to cool off for a while. I had to take a picture of this while we were there:
DSC01082.jpg

It's the Tower of Toblerone! I imagine that anyone reading this who knows me at all, has got to be scratching his or her head right about now. If you think I don't like Toblerone you are correct! I'd give you a prize for being so perceptive if I had a prize to give, which I don't.

Anyway, this picture is a joke. And I'm going to share it with you and you'll probably roll your eyes and be like, "that's nothing, wait until you hear what my mother-in-law did..." but I really do think it's amusing so I'd like to tell you about it.

Rewind to the summer of 1997 - Jason and I have been dating for 2 years and while we're not yet engaged, we know and our families know that it's coming - the sound of wedding bells is already in the air. This was the summer that Jay's parents celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary by taking a 3-week trip to Germany and Switzerland. Upon their return one Saturday evening Jason asked me to come over and I did and there was much travel talk, and gift giving, and good cheer. It sounded like they really had a nice time and I was pleased for them. I wasn't looking for a gift and I wasn't expecting a gift but I think Jason's mom must have felt awkward because she was handing out sterling silver bracelets and hand carved wooden jewelry boxes to all the females in the room (well, except for me).

So she looks around her chaotic kitchen and then says, "Here Brenda, I got this for you."

And it was a single package of Toblerone.

Just like the one you can buy at the local grocery store for $2.50.

I thanked her of course. Despite what you may think about me after reading some of my posts I am relatively well mannered. And I was a lot nicer ten years ago than I am today. ;)

But internally my response was something like this:

Wow.

I feel awkward for having made you feel awkward. And by us making each other feel awkward now everyone else feels awkward because you've just let the entire family know how much you don't think of me. Not that you really needed to think of me at all. But really, in this situation nothing at all probably would have been better than a triangle of chocolate that I can't eat anyway because there are nuts in it.

This event led to my personal copyright infringement of Hallmark - now, when a close friend is celebrating something or recovering from an illness I don't send flowers I send Toblerone...because I care enough to send the very best.

:lmao: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

And that's why I had to take this picture.

In all fairness, however, I do have to say that relations between the MIL and me have improved considerably since this incident. I may be a disappoinment as a DIL on many levels but at the end of the day I love her sonny-boy more than anything else in this world and I think she's finally realized it. :goodvibes

Coming soon...Downtown Disney...the Adventurers Club...Kungaloosh...and VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A couple more quick responses...

Nancy, Paige & Judy - thanks for coming over to read; hope you're enjoying your time! BTW, Judy - the squishee is just our name for a slushy drink; you're correct in your assumption.

Michelle - thanks again for the Dr. Nick! I don't see Corporal Punishment in your collection, which puts ours to shame.

WDW Poly Princess - What is it about EPCOT/DTD transportation? Or is it something about us folks from Missouri? ;)

Jennifer - as long as you're satisfied, I'm happy! ;) Thanks for the kind words! :goodvibes

Still digging the report...Merryvale is such an awesome winery, we are lucky enough to live about an hour from Napa, and have been there a few times.:thumbsup2

Bring on the AC!

(Kungaloosh!)

And I think we Missourians may be transportationly challenged. Or we just couldn't figure out why the roads didn't have ice on them in winter!

No problem! Nope, I don't have CP...

but I DO have Kang & Kodos, which are my favorites!

KKsimpsons.jpg

I only collected the Playmates Intellitronic figures, and I didn't get them all... well, I got close.

I finally caught up with your latest installment! I have to remember NOT to read your TR when I am hungry!!! When we ever get around to doing some real dinners at Food & Wine Fest, you're the first person I'm going to ask for advice! :thumbsup2

I can't wait to read more! :goodvibes

Glad to hear you're still digging our trip - I try to be brief but somehow it never actually happens. I gotta say, after trying some of that Merryvale wine I totally understand why people at Coral Reef were so excited. It was terrific!

Crystal - I agree, those of us in Missouri are definitely challenged when it comes to transportation. I hope to updated with the AC tonight - we loved it!

Kang and Kodos are two of our favorites, too! My favorite episode with them is the Bill Clinton / Bob Dole 1996 election...still cracks me up to this day.

We are merely exchanging long protein strands. If you can think of a better way I'd like to hear it. :lmao: :lmao:

Thanks for reading!

PS. Aren't you guys proud that I finally figured out how to quote multiple people at once? It's really been bugging me! :goodvibes

yeah!! Loved the foodie report now a trippie!

Lillygator - Wow...I'm flattered that a Bad Girl would want to read my trippie. ;) Thanks for stopping by (and btw - I've been reading yours but I've been bad about posting anything...I'll try to be better, I promise!).

Subscribing!!!

Great Trippie ! Can't wait to hear more.:thumbsup2

Thanks for reading Skippyman!

and I just had to laugh out loud....since I read the dining report I knew who was dubbed....and then the pic!!

Classic, truly classic!!

hey - are you coming to the F&W Fest this year? We just rented BCV points for our Oct stay - can't wait!

Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words, isn't it? Poor poor Grimace...tried so hard to be a good sport but it was painfully obvious that unless WDW installed slot machines somewhere...maybe on the paddleboats that go back and forth between MK and the transportation center...the trip was going to a dismal failure.

And to answer your question - yes!! We are headed back to WDW in October for F&W. Right now we're booked at BCV 10/13-10/20...the dates may be changing a little but I think this is pretty close.

We want to try Party for the Senses, just once. Have you guys ever gone? I know it's pricey but so much food and booze in one place for three hours...how could we not go? ;)

Hi There,
Just browsed over from your food report thread, really enjoying your trip report as well. Thought you guys looked familiar from the pictures :) Turns out we were there at the same SS with the sugar rush guys. Can't wait for more of your report.

YeY first post (been lurking for a while).

Ladies, let's talk candidly about these buttons for a moment, shall we? Our options for attaching them to our persons are somewhat limited, especially in warm weather, and the buttons definitely attract attention: other guests...CMs...nursing infants. As long as you don't mind the occassional stranger addressing a happy birthday to your breasts as opposed to you, I predict you will get days of unmitigated enjoyment from wearing your button.

Brenda, why wouldn't people wish your breasts Happy Birthday? Aren't they as old as you are???:confused3

Girt25 - well first allow me to congratulate you on your very first post! And now, pardon the cliche, but OMG, it's a small world!!! :lmao:

I can't believe we were at the same Sweet Sunday...too funny. Hopefully our group and the other group who ended up with the seating issues weren't too big of a distraction. Apart from that we really did enjoy the event - I just love Warren Brown!

Thanks so much for reading. :goodvibes

Nancy, I'd have to answer no... I was what they often-times refer to as a "late bloomer." :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

OMG! Does that sound like my MIL!! Except they are too cheap to bring gifts from trips, at least that is what I have always been lead to believe, but now I am wondering if maybe I was the only one not receiving? But that does sound like Christmas at the IL's, SIL's get DVD players and such while I open things like coffee mugs, dish towels and note cards.:thumbsup2 We lovingly refer to it as the "Christmas Shaft".

Thursday, October 19th - The Evening...Finally!

Tonight Jason and I are going to do something we've never done before - we're gonna head over to Pleasure Island and check out one of the clubs. And not just any club, but the Adventurers Club!

Once again I must thank the DIS community for turning me on to the AC. I did some research prior to the trip and decided that it looked like a perfectly goofy place for us to hang out. Just so you know, we're really not club / bar people...when we're living our normal daily lives I sometimes think that the Amish may be bigger party animals than us. And even on vacation, we tend to do most of our drinking with meals - it's safer that way.

So in many ways this was a big leap for us. I would have only myself (and thousands of DISers) to blame if it backfired and Jason ended up peeved because we didn't watch Game 7 of the NLCS.

Here's the hubby just before we set off on our trek to the Adventurers Club:
DSC01092.jpg

Pay close attention to his shirt...it will be important later on.

For those of you (like us) who know almost nothing about the AC, allow me to plagarize from Allears, "The AC presents an interactive entertainment experience in a setting reminiscent of the fictional 1930's gentleman adventurer clubs, as depicted in Hollywood films of that era. It is a bit like going to a theater at no special time, sitting right on the stage -- one that encompasses the entire theater -- and having the action sporadically occur all around you, even to the extent of your functioning as an extra in the play. You are a visitor to the Adventurers Club on New Years Eve 1937, when the Club holds an open house for the purpose of recruiting new members (that’s you). You will be invited to become initiated as a Club member and participate in the various activities that are held that evening, such as casting your vote for the Adventurer of the Year."

Remember that couple we met at Coral Reef? They raved about the AC. "If you like silly stuff," they said, "then you'll really enjoy your experience at the AC."

Silly?

Well, call me Putty and call him String 'cause it sounds like we've found our home away from home!

PI tickets in hand we approach the front entrance of the AC and are in with no trouble at all. There weren't many people there when we first arrived and it gave us some time to poke around the place. The attention to detail and theming are incredible - I can't wait to go back again just to see what we missed on this visit.

Here's a shot of the main salon, focused on The Goddess, who speaks, and moves her eyes, and even blows smoke! She's definitely part of the show, but you never know when she's going to join in the fun.
DSC01095.jpg

I took this picture while we were sitting at the bar (surprise, surprise!). By the way, just a heads up (pun definitely intended) - children are welcome at the AC but food is not available; drinks only, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

I was really excited to have a chance to try the Kungaloosh, which is the signature drink of the AC. I had even stumbled across information about special mugs available for purchase...I was ready and willing to over-pay for goofy, tacky items that I would never use at home. These two pictures (borrowed from adventurersclub.net) will immediately demonstrate why I knew that the AC was our kind of place.
1b602650.jpg
17306540.jpg

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Does it get any better than that?

And then after months of anticipation, of sneaking peeks at those pictures while at work and then giggling helplessly at my desk, can you imagine my devastation when the bartender tells me that the AC no longer sells the novelty mugs? We had to drink our Kungaloosh out of a plastic cup - there's nothing exotic or taste enhancing about that! :sad2:

To quote Jason, "I wish I had a monkey's head." ;)

The Kungaloosh, is a pretty good drink, all things considered. It's a frozen concoction made with Captain Morgan Original spiced rum, blackberry brandy liquer, orange and strawberry juices. A bit sweeter than I usually like my drinks, but it was still tasty.

While we were sipping our drinks the club President, Pamelia Perkins, wandered by, shaking hands and welcoming the new members. She gave a nice little speech and decided to pick on my husband who, for the rest of the evening, was to be known as Festive Print-Shirt Boy. :lmao:

Thursday, October 19th - You Didn't Think it was Humanly Possible to Make This Day Any Longer, Did You?

As the evening and the show unfold, the main characters will direct you to different rooms in the club - the Mask Room, the Library, the Treasure Room. One of the things we liked about the AC was that everything was so fluid - sometimes we followed the other guests into the side rooms for the show and other times we stayed in the salon and relaxed.

Pictures, because everyone wants to see pictures!
DSC01096.jpg

Get your minds out of the gutter, people!! :lmao: This is another shot of the main salon and I can't help it if the statue's private parts ended up in the picture that I took of the Colonel. We had just taken the membership oath and learned the secret member greeting...and see that lady with the reddish-orange turban on her head? That's the club President!

Here's the Mask Room, where the masks are part of the show - this room was a riot, especially those two talking masks mounted on the oval mats. I believe their names are Arnie and Claude.
DSC01098.jpg

Here's the Treasure Room, where there's a Genie hanging out.
DSC01100.jpg

We didn't take any pictures of the library, which is where the larger stage shows and musical performances take place. There is also another bar in the library, in case you work up a thirst finding a place to sit. I know I tried something different while we were in the library but I don't remember what it was. I do remember that I liked the Kungaloosh better.

We stayed at the AC until about 10PM and then we left because we were getting hungry and terribly curious about the baseball game.

We hadn't had anything to eat since leaving the Coral Reef earlier in the afternoon, and some caloric-laden dieter's nightmare from Ghiradellis sounded like a winning idea to us. Sadly, there was no room at the inn because everybody and their brother and their fifteen kids were waiting in line just to get in the front door. Thanks anyway but I don't need ice cream badly enough to wait in line for three days.

We ended up grabbing a couple of pretzels and sharing some fake cheese sauce while we sat overlooking the lake. It was a nice spot that could have been a lot nicer if everyone around us hadn't been smoking. As far as we could tell we weren't in a designated smoking area, but maybe we missed the sign. :confused3

At any rate, once we were done with our salty, yeasty snack we went back to our villa to watch the rest of the baseball game. It was a taut, nail biting experience and quite frankly, after the catch that Endy Chavez made on Scott Rolen's homerun in the 7th inning I was convinced that the Cardinals' season was endy.

All hail Jeff Suppan...who pitched out of a tight spot in the bottom half of the 7th to keep the game tied at 1-1. And bow down to Yadier Molina, who couldn't seem to hit a baseball with a bat to save his life during the regular season but somehow managed to hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 9th. And Adam Wainwright...you don't know me and I don't know you and we're both married to other people, but I love you in a perfectly harmless, no-need-for-a-restraining-order, fangirl sort of way.

:cheer2: :cheer2: We're going to the World Series!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

It's a re-match of the 1968 World Series...Cardinals vs. Tigers (payback time). I like to imagine that every baseball pundit in America that night kept hearing the voice of Vizzini in his head, "INCONCEIVABLE!!!"

We watched the ESPN coverage of the post-game fun, which wasn't nearly as in-depth as the local stations back home would have been. But you take what you can get and then you go to bed happy. There are two quotes from the post-game coverage that struck us as funny enough while we were watching that I had to write them down. Tim Kjurkian, who does a nice job most of the time when he's prepared, was obvioulsy suffering from a bad bout of the "inconceivables" because he asked the same two questions of every Cardinal player he interviewed.

1) "The Cardinals are going to the World Series...how good does that sound?"

2) "How good has Yadier Molina been for you in this postseason?"

Poor ESPN...first they lose the Yankees, and now they've lost the Mets. The World Series is going to be played in the Midwest and no one in the country cares and their reporter on the field appears to have munched a brain tumor prior to the conclusion of the game. Looks like post-season baseball sucks for them.

But not for us! ;)

And so the day ends, with two deliriously happy middle-aged, midwestern dorks falling into their bed...dreams of stadiums filled with tonga toast dancing through their heads.

Tomorrow will include breakfast at the Kona, exploration of the Wilderness Lodge and Saratoga Springs, pool time, laundry (because I can) and an evening of celebration at Raglan Road.

Thanks for reading!! :goodvibes

I read so much about the Adventurers Club. Some day I'll have to visit, some day.

Jennifer - I think you guys would really enjoy the AC. We're going back in May and I can't wait...maybe this time I can take a picture of that statue's butt. :lmao:
