OK, now that Christmas is over and knowing that there will be sales in January, I have a question for those of you who have done a 7 day before. How dressy is the formal night? I read somewhere about tuxedo rentals & also saw pictures of ladies in long gowns. On the members cruises we've done even the so called dress-up night wasn't very dressy. Also, how dressy is semi-formal? Since my basic retirement wardrobe consists of mostly jeans & T-shirts/sweatshirts I might need to upgrade it!! Thanks.

Nancy - I have wondered about this too. I mean on other lines, I have seen anything from jeans (which really is somewhat inconsiderate) to the tux and beaded gowns. I have even worn the beaded gowns. I have some formals I am thinking about for this cruise, and like you're saying, I got them on major sale after the holiday. So, those of you have done a Disney 7 day before and partake of the formal night as a formal night - how formal is it?
I have been on several 7 nights on the Magic and formal night is formal. Captain Mickey and Minnie also dress up and you can get your picture taken with them. Many men choose to wear tuxedos but, at a minimum, they expect the gentlemen to wear a dark suit and tie. Both my Dad and my brother chose to wear tuxes. My Dad owns one, because he needs it for the Knights of Columbus but Frank rented his from Disney. You fill out a form ahead of time and they have it waiting in your cabin and they pick it up after you leave. It fit quite well and he looked very nice. If you rent one, you can always choose to wear it again on semi formal night to get your money's worth!
Ladies wear anything from cocktail dresses to beaded gowns to dressy pantsuits. I've wore a gown for my parents 50th anniversary and a cocktail length dress the other times. I love to get all dressed up for formal night! Just a suggestion - I have a friend who cruises a lot and she picks up inexpensive formal dresses in consignment shops. The dresses have usually only been worn once or twice and you can get them pretty cheap.
You can choose not to dress up and ignore the formal night, however, they really prefer that you head for the buffet and do not eat in the dining rooms that night.
Semi formal is supposed to be jackets and ties for the men and a dress or pantsuit for the ladies.
Hope that helps!
