OK, now that Christmas is over and knowing that there will be sales in January, I have a question for those of you who have done a 7 day before. How dressy is the formal night? I read somewhere about tuxedo rentals & also saw pictures of ladies in long gowns. On the members cruises we've done even the so called dress-up night wasn't very dressy. Also, how dressy is semi-formal? Since my basic retirement wardrobe consists of mostly jeans & T-shirts/sweatshirts I might need to upgrade it!! Thanks.

N

Nancy - I have wondered about this too. I mean on other lines, I have seen anything from jeans (which really is somewhat inconsiderate) to the tux and beaded gowns. I have even worn the beaded gowns. I have some formals I am thinking about for this cruise, and like you're saying, I got them on major sale after the holiday. So, those of you have done a Disney 7 day before and partake of the formal night as a formal night - how formal is it?

I have been on several 7 nights on the Magic and formal night is formal. Captain Mickey and Minnie also dress up and you can get your picture taken with them. Many men choose to wear tuxedos but, at a minimum, they expect the gentlemen to wear a dark suit and tie. Both my Dad and my brother chose to wear tuxes. My Dad owns one, because he needs it for the Knights of Columbus but Frank rented his from Disney. You fill out a form ahead of time and they have it waiting in your cabin and they pick it up after you leave. It fit quite well and he looked very nice. If you rent one, you can always choose to wear it again on semi formal night to get your money's worth!

Ladies wear anything from cocktail dresses to beaded gowns to dressy pantsuits. I've wore a gown for my parents 50th anniversary and a cocktail length dress the other times. I love to get all dressed up for formal night! Just a suggestion - I have a friend who cruises a lot and she picks up inexpensive formal dresses in consignment shops. The dresses have usually only been worn once or twice and you can get them pretty cheap.

You can choose not to dress up and ignore the formal night, however, they really prefer that you head for the buffet and do not eat in the dining rooms that night.

Semi formal is supposed to be jackets and ties for the men and a dress or pantsuit for the ladies.

Hope that helps!

Just wondering....is the DIS running a little weird lately? There are days when I can't get into my pm's or our thread. I keep getting an "unauthorized access" error. :confused3

Have I insulted the DISgods and got kicked out??? :worship:

Most times I have to take a back door approach to get to the DISboards.

Anyone, anyone????

After trying 4 times to reply to this message and not having it quote correctly each of those times, I finally just deleted the other part and am answering now - Up until I tried to reply to this message, I haven't been having trouble getting to the board or my PMs. I do keep the board as a shortcut on my desktop though and just periodically update the shortcut. Most of the time though, I leave it on all the time, even when I am sleeping.

Even with getting a flu shot in October, guess who is in bed with the flu? Running a low grade fever 100.1 and rising, it was 99.3 about two hours ago. Was up most of the night coughing my head off. My head is so stuffy I can hardly breathe and I've got the chills. Hazel just got home from church and is fixing me a bowl of Chicken Soup.

Been feeling bad since Christmas Eve, now I see why.

After my soup, I'm going back to bed.

Oh Andy - That is terrible. :sick:I do hope you'll feel back to yourself soon! :grouphug:

We have been on three 7 day. Roger just wears a suit and tie and I have a black dress. It's not a gown and we fit right in. On our last 7 day in 2006 our table mates came in shorts and nice shirts he was so sunburnt he couldn't wear pants. It didn't bother us at all- I even offered to go change if it would make him more comfortable:rotfl2: I really don't like dresses.

I hope he does too! I so love Key West! The last time I was there (and it has been a while) I found a lovely local place - a hole in the wall really - that had the best conch fritters and coconut ice cream! Yum!

We've talked about switching to the dish - how do you like it?

I don't get the difference between it and cable it's more a boy issue and what football games we get. I know the DVR holds more hours than my neighbors cable one. But when it rains really hard the signal is lost.

As luck would have it, Lina bought Hazel's jeans and tops at Steve & Barry which is going out of business. So, they would not refund or exchange the items Hazel had. Since they wouldn't do that, Hazel took the clothes to the cleaners and is having someone there fix the clothes. Lina paid $24.00 for the four clothing items, it is costing me $58.00  to have the clothes fixed so Hazel can wear them.......:sad2:

Steve and Barry's going out of business.:scared1: :scared1: Well, if they can't make it in thie recession, then I hate to think who can.

Good Morning Everyone! It is a lazy Sunday morning in our house - everyone is still injoying the massive cooking and baking efforts of the last week. We need to rake the yard, but it keeps raining every day. I guess that gives us a good excuse to just kick back and relax some more! :rotfl2:

I guess the rain stayed to the north, it is beautiful here. I sat out in the sun this morning. Now the Patriots are on, luckily this on is on TV so we don't have to go any where.

Evening All. In laws have left and we're now on our own. We had a good 4 days but it's great to finally have the house to ourselves.

Christmas is finally over as we're back to work tomorrow:sad2:

We do have a few days off after the new year, so not all bad news.

Back to read some more.

Soooooo .... we were quoted an amazing price for the 2010 September repo cruise that sails from Barcelona to Port Canaveral (this amazing price included airfare ... wow!). Anyway we've always wanted a chance to try a more unique cruise and dip our feet into something on the other side of the Atlantic. So we canceled this cruise and booked the transatlantic instead - we just couldn't pass it up.

More likely than not we'll be at WDW the week leading up to your cruise departure, and we would be tickled to meet with any of you who might be so inclined. We're really harmless ... unless there's food on the table. ;)

Best wishes to you all for a happy, healthy, joy-filled new year and a terrific cruise. :grouphug:

Brenda....sad that you've had to cancel :sad1: , but glad that we will get to sail with you on the 2010 repo :yay: . Rick and I will be at WDW a few days before, so love to meet up if we can arrange it.

So while Rob was playing his new PS3 game last night, I decided to figure out what we will be doing at the ports :thumbsup2

Our choices are rather limited since Kira will be almost 3.

I wanted to go to Trunk Bay when we go to St Thomas but after figuring out the costs and the time to travel there and back, I think it would be better to stick closer to the ship. I`ve narrowed it down to a few choices but I am leaning towards going to Emerald Beach. It has a nice resort there and it`s not busy. We just want a not-so crowded beach for Kira to play on for a few hours.

And in St. Maarten, I think we will head to Divi Little Bay. Same deal, close to ship, not so crowded, little resort with bathroom facilities and a nice little beach. And if I am feeling adventurous, I may make a Spa appointment there :thumbsup2 I`m not a spa girl but they have a nice Pedi-Spa treatment with a leg and foot rub that I might try :cloud9:

So, who else knows what they will be doing in port ?

On the hopes that we get to St Maarten, we'll be doing one of the tours and then St John when we get to St Thomas.

Interesting - the ad in our Sunday paper makes mention of how cable providers talk about the signal being lost in bad weather and how that is just bunk - that they provide the signal 99.9% of the time of something. The signal is one of the reasons we had avoided it before now. Cable (ours is Comcast) is getting so expensive that we are seriously looking into changing.

Just in case someone hasn't answered, you can get away with almost anything now, which to me is a shame. Rick and I make a point of dressing up for formal night - Rick in a suit and me in a nice dress.

I have, in the past, heard people muttering as we queued to enter our dining room that they didn't understand what all the fuss was about and why we went to the trouble of getting all dressed up. That's just sad.

Amen! I agree - if it is formal night, then people should dress formally. I think having the different nights is all part of the fun, and dressing up for formal night is part of that fun.

We did the Island Drive and Explorer cruise in St Martin last time and really enjoyed it.:

Just read the write up on this on the BOB site and is one we'll think about or perhaps the under two flags tour.

Need to stick together on this. We saw someone in a tropical shirt and shorts in Palo's this year and couldn't believe it.

Hmmm, so far so good for me Nancy. Maybe sign out and sign in again :confused3

Boy, you said it! Comcast just raised my bill by $10 a month! :scared1: When I called them and asked them if they if they were doing this so I would move to another carrier, they said 'that's your choice!'. The is a stupid attitude because they are losing people to Verizon FiOS everyday, unfortunately, Verizon can't keep up with the demand. The Verizon FiOS (fibre optic) is actually faster than cable but they aren't offering it in my area yet. So I may switch to dish while I'm waiting.

I'm hanging out with you guys!!! I agree that formal night is fun and I hate it when people complain about getting dressed up. I also love to see all of the children dressed up with their parents and grandparents.

If you don't want to dress up, go have dinner at the buffet!!!

As for Formal Night attire, you will see EVERYTHING that night! You will see tuxedos, gowns and tiaras and you will see shorts and tank tops.

Last year, since we had so much stuff with us, we decided to rent a tux for Rob and I wore two black dresses, one on formal night, the other on semi-formal night. I must say that this time more than any other, he stood out a little and we saw only a handful of tuxes. I would say that the majority of men were in slacks and a nice top.

I never saw any really dressy ladies this time, most with a cocktail-type dress and/or a pantsuit.

The ONLY people that didn't fit in and people were looking at were the ones that wore shorts and tee shirts/tank tops in the dining rooms.

To me, that is just rude. If you want to dress like that, no problem...go to the buffet, it's almost the same meal and you will fit in with the shorts/tees. If you are going to eat in the dining room, make some kind of an effort! You absolutely don't need a gown/tux/suit...but a nice pair of pants and a nice shirt/blouse will do just fine!

In 2005, my luggage didn't arrive until after 10pm and the only thing I had was shorts. Even though it was the first night and it was a casual attire that night, it just felt wrong to wear my shorts to dinner in Lumieres. :sad2: I felt so out of place. I LOVE shorts and could wear them everyday but it just felt wrong to be wearing them in a lovely restaurant. Just before dinner we ran into Mike & Robin in Mickey's Mates and they were SO gorgeous!!! I was SO embarrassed  :scared: They were all clean and purdy and I looked like I was ready to hit the Magic Kingdom  :rolleyes1

We won't be dressing up as much on this cruise (luggage restrictions! and a three-year old  ) but I will make an effort :thumbsup2

Ok, I will step down off my soapbox now
huh.gif
