1 Year to SAVE!!!

Grocery shopping went well today...I spent $56 from a $100 budget!

Goal: $1000
Former Balance:$385.08
Saved this week: $44.00
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Left to save: $341.08
DH and I talked last night and we will be putting $200 into the Mickey jar since we did not do anything for each other for anniversary or Christmas. :cool1:
Awsome thread. You have really inspired me to save. We just returned in early December and decided to take a year off so our next trip will be in fall of 2013. I thought it was way too early to start thinking about that, but now I'm inspired to save.
There are 5 of us so I'm guessing the bare bones minimum we will need since we will all be "Disney Adults", will be $6000. Wow, kinda scary when I think of it that way.
I started a Christmas Club that my DH knows nothing about. $25/week for the next two years will give me.....$2600.
Only need to save another $3400 :sick:
Is that gonna be possible with one going to college in 2013? Am I dreaming that its gonna happen?
I have 3 in college right now and the oldest is heading to medical school next fall. Yes, it is still possible! You just need to know how to get the lowest price possible for your trip and how to work the rewards deals.
I'm leaving Sunday for 5 nights at Kidani for 3 real adults (not Disney adults). I've spent a total of $790 OOP so far and that includes point rental, dining plan and 3 RT airfares with Earlybird check in. I have over $1K in various gift cards (not all of them Disney). The cash for the trip, the frequent flyer miles and the gift cards were all saved up from different programs over a 2-year period.
So yes, it is possible.
Please tell me how to find a reputable place to sell old coins!
:confused3
I'm a Realtor and one of my old clients is a coin dealer. That just kind of fell in my lap so I can't really help.
My best suggestion is to check ebay sold listings for an approximate value of each one, and take your coins to several shops to see what you might be able to get for them. You won't get the same about as you would on ebay, but it will save you the hassle (if you hate ebay like me)
I found some at my grandma's house. They have an ebay value of about $330. I'm taking them to the dealer next week, I will post what they offer for them. I'm hoping for $250.
We are going the second week in NOvember and Im guesstimating we need to save $4000.00 for plane tix, hotel and park tix, dining plan (hope to get free dining) and spending $$. I will take some from my income tax. I was just calculating that I need to save $12.63 a day. If Ibreak it down that way, it doesn't sound too bad.
I love this thread....thanks to everyone who posted all these great ideas.
Happy saving,
Fran
I'd love to see your budget breakdown! I like looking at those to inspire me to be creative when trying to save for the trip. :):thumbsup2
on this! We are planning an October 2012 trip. :cool1: We did some pricing today and are thinking we will need about $5000 from start to finish. We will use some of our tax refund for part of the trip, but will need to save for the rest. I have a coin jar that I have been filling up this year and it is full. I think I will take it to the bank and see how much is there. That will be a start. This thread is awesome! Can't wait to update everyone!
Cost of trip $5000
Need to save $2500
Total saved... TBA
Would you all mind if I joined in?
So excited to have finally picked our dates and resorts! We are DVC'ers so our resort isn't something I have to budget for but I do have to budget for everything else!
We are a family of 4, DH, myself and our 2 kids DD(14 at time of trip) and DS(9 at time of trip). We will be staying at AKV studio concierge, and BLT studio lake view. So excited!!
I had started saving but our dog got sick and that took our savings I had for our trip ($1300) So, I have to start over saving my pennies! I am a SAHM so I am trying to save with the grocery shopping and such.
I just booked our airfare and it was $1117.60 :scared1:
But, I had a $518.80 credit, then DH had some trueblue points which knocked off $139 so the total left to pay was $449.10.
So here is what I need to save:
Airfare $449.10
DDP (for the 2nd part of our stay at BLT) 6 nights $1017.84
Park passes (5 day through UT) $987.01
Airport parking $115
So that's a total of $2568.95 I need to save.
I already have $123 saved.
I have 7 months to save, our trip is at the end of Aug. My DSIS will dog sit so that's one less exspense!!
$2568.95 needed
$158 saved
$2410.95 left to save
wow, that seems like so much!:eek:
I counted my change jar today. I have only been putting change in it for about a week.
Need: $4000.00
Have: $16.52
Left:$3983.48
Not a lot, but like I said. I started saving change just 1 week ago.
a recommendation is to gather up some bottles and cans! not sure if youve started thta already but its really helped us get 40 dollars!
If you save $16.52 every week for a year that is $859.04! That is awesome! Every little bit counts.
I'd love to see your budget breakdown! I like looking at those to inspire me to be creative when trying to save for the trip. :):thumbsup2
Here's my budget breakdown.
Transportation to the airport = $0 My husband is dropping us off. We're 20 mins. from the airport. I'm not factoring in the cost of gas.
Pet sitting = $0 Oldest son is still home from college. It's the least he can do for me. Besides, they're his dogs, too!
Airfare = $75 for 3 RT tickets. 2 were purchased using the bonus awards that I got from SWA for getting their Visa last spring. The third was paid for with points from the Diner's Club Mastercard that we use to pay for business expenses. The $75 covers 9/11 fees ($5 RT x 3) and Early Bird Check In fees ($10 pp each way).
Room = $715 I rented 55 points from my brother @$13/pt. (which is kind of high but that's what I offered since he could use the money). I felt that giving him the money was better than giving Disney my money. This way, it all stays in the family! That was enough to get 5 nights in a Kidani studio with a standard view.
Dining Plan = $773.10 That's the 2012 price for 3 adults, 5 nights. I send my brother a scan of the backs of 5 gift cards to call member services and add the dining plan to our stay.
Tickets = ~$250 Which is really low and I'm sort of cheating here. My daughter and I have non-expiring multi-day passes that I purchased back in 2005. We will be using those. I also have a 1-day base ticket from a free dining trip that we took in 2006. I'll be giving that to my niece so that she can upgrade it to either a 6 or 7 day hopper. Once used, the ticket will have a gate value of $90.53 (inc. tax) and that will be applied to the price of the upgraded pass. My niece has offered to pay for her own ticket.
Souvenirs = $0 It's not as if we will not purchase souvenirs. But I have a "Merchandise" gift card that Disney offered a deal on when my husband and I went in 2009. The deal was $475 for a $600 GC. It never expires. I still have over $400 on it.
Tips = ~$150 I'm figuring around $10 for the Skycaps, another $10-$15 each way for DME and about $100 for tableservice dining. There is no maid service when you stay on DVC points, so there won't be any Mousekeeping envelopes this trip.
Car Rental = $145 I have a standard size sedan reserved at the Car Care Center. Cost is $103. Even if I have to fill the tank completely, it shouldn't cost more than $40.
Misc. = $400 This is to cover food and beverages in the airport, the cover charge at Jellyrolls, any alcoholic beverages at the pool or with dinner (the girls are both 21), and a grocery run for a couple of items we will want in the room for breakfast.
Total Price is in the $2500 range. Out of that, I estimate that actual cash OOP will be $935 ($715 for the DVC rental, $75 for the airfare, $40-$50 for tips, around $45 for the car and $50 for misc.) The remainder will be covered by gift cards in one form or the other.
I have
  • over $1K in Disney gift cards and Disney Visa rewards dollars that I can use. The GC came from various rewards programs plus I purchased some of them from disneystore.com using my Disney Visa rewards dollars.
  • a $100 Alamo gift card to pay for most of the rental that I also got from my Diner's Club points.
  • $90 in GC from Landry's to pay for a nice lunch at Yak & Yeti instead of using the dining plan.
  • approx. $400 in cash from my change jars and rebates
I think that we'll be okay but if there are any problems, I have my Disney Visa, SWA Visa and my Citibank Thank You Mastercard to cover emergencies.
$5868 needed for room, tips, spending money
-$50 DH got for his side job yesterday
=$3654 left to pay ($2000 of it spending money)
WOW!:eek: Thats almost $350 in this week alone!!! Now it wont be like this EVERY week. But with Christmas gifts and such, im gonna save it while we have it. :goodvibes
Thanks for this wonderful thread!:hug:
Well, Our plans have changed slightly...
We plan to camp now! The kids are super excited!! Not to mention that knocks our costs down a little bit!! Still not sure if we will get to do YES this year or not and most likely paying OOP for meals since its F&W! Plus need to pay for MNNSHP if we decide to do that, too.
I'm just going to work on paying off the site first.
I've been following this thread for a while but I don't think I've ever posted on it! My family is currently saving for our 2012 vacation. We're still trying to figure out where that will be (something besides Disney, since we've been to Florida for just about all of our vacations). Our budget for vacations this year is small since we have a lot of home improvements lined up. So I'm trying to come up with creative ways to boost the budget so we can still do something nice.
So far I have:
$140 from ebay sales
$20 from serve.com
$15 in change
So $175.00. Not a ton, but a decent start. I'm hoping to come under budget this week grocery shopping and add that to the fund, but since I need to stock up on a lot I'm not sure how well that will work out! I'd like to save about $1500 so I still have a long way to go!
[*]$90 in GC from Landry's to pay for a nice lunch at Yak & Yeti instead of using the dining plan.
Yak & Yeti is Landry's? Are there others? I can get Landry's gift cards through my health care program.
I'm in!!!!! Trying to get to the princess 1/2 for 2013. I've been saving change and have around $60. Also Im old school and still keep a check register and balance to the penny at the end of the month. In the register I round all my purchases up to the next dollar (like BoA keep the change) and at the end of the month I balance and put the extra money into the vacation fund!!!!! Easy way to save money w/out even thinking about it.
