Ok fellow Chicago/Tri-State area Dis Members!!!
I am starting to plan our Dis Meet at DWTD in Schaumburg. I am looking for dates from anyone around the Chicago/NW Indiana, Wisconsin area that wants to go. I have been speaking with Derek, my wonderful guide, who will set us all up. I just need dates from you all and who is going. We talked previously about doing a Meet in February. Does this still sound good to everyone?? Let me know.

Here is my 2¢ worth. Yes, the iPad works great for reading and posting. IMO, it will do 98% of what you use a computer for, as well as a few other handy things when you travel, such as listen to audio books, music, play games, or watch movies and/or tv shows. GREAT battery life which is quite nice for when you are on planes for hours! You can use a wireless keyboard for it if you wish, but not a mouse, because it is solely touch screen based for navigation. On the other hand, yes, the MacBooks are expensive. They will do everything you want a computer to do because it is one. They are supposed to have long battery life too, although I can't vouch for the new ones. We have a G4 iBook which is still going strong after 5 years and the only problem we had was keeping too many pictures on it which took up a LOT of space. So, we moved them off of it to our desktop. Otherwise, everything is just as fast and smooth as when it was new. We did have to replace the battery a couple of years ago, which is to be expected with as much use as we give it!So, it looks as if my 13 month old laptop is dying on me.Same problem I had with my last HP laptop. I think the power cord got cranked at some point and now it doesn't want to charge unless I really play with the bit where the jack plugs into the laptop.
I'm wondering if I should just replace it with an iPad. What do you iPad users think? How well does the iPad work for reading and replying to posts here? Maybe I'll just throw in the dang towel and buy the macbook that I've been wanting for years. I just wish they weren't so darned expensive!!![]()
Don't forget about Blizzard Beach! Too bad the Osborne Dancing Christmas lights aren't still up. They made snow for that too. I will see if I can post a pic of that later tonight.I happened to catch this tidbit this evening ...
Quote:
According to national news sources, it is snowing in 49 states across the country including Hawaii where snow has fallen atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Florida is the only state without fresh snow.
No, it doesn't sound good. It sounds wonderful! Can't wait to see you, Jim and Lilly again! I will let my social secretary (AKA Sue) take care of arranging the dates.Ok fellow Chicago/Tri-State area Dis Members!!!

Kelly - I vote for either Saturday. Only because I don't want to have to worry about getting home early on a school night with the kids.
What are everyone elses thoughts on that? I know it will be a majority rules type of decision, so if it is on a Sunday we will still be there of course!![]()
I say go to the nearest Apple store and play with both of them for a while and see which one you like more.
(After reading what I just wrote, it seems that personally, I vote both.)![]()

I think I may do that.I also remembered that I can get $100 off of the MacBook two different ways. Federal employees can get a discount (the DH is one) and I can get a discount because I'm a homeschool teacher (through the education store). Doesn't look like there is a discount on the iPad though.
Thanks for all that info!! I have an iPhone 4 and have really been wanting an iPad for internet and reading (Kindle app). But, after some reflection, I really do need an actual laptop to run programs that I use somewhat frequently. Two of those programs don't run on Mac, but I read on both their support sites that you can install Windows on your new Mac and then run the programs through Windows on the Mac. Who knew?
Maybe I can sell my broken laptop for parts on eBay and make up a little of the money there. Now I just have to convince the DH that we can spring for the MacBook.
It's only about the cost of 18 video games, right?

Good luck with your decision. I also noticed that Apple does not offer a discount on the "smaller stuff" like iPads and iTouch![]()
Thanks! Yeah, no discounts on the really popular stuff. Although they do have a pretty good deal for students/teachers that runs every summer. If you buy a new Mac, you get an iPod Touch for free. Unfortunately, summer is a long way away still.![]()
Ian! How have you been? Sorry that you finally got some of the New York Snow up there.
That meet that the Chicago/Tri-State people are organizing sounds great. Fortunately, I have Sue nearby so ours should be outstanding alsoI was trying to remember who volunteered to organize the one WAAAAYYYYY North and it came to me as I was driving home tonight. It was Dudley! I am sure he will do a crack job if the task does not drive him nuts...
Be safe my friend!
