Ok fellow Chicago/Tri-State area Dis Members!!!

I am starting to plan our Dis Meet at DWTD in Schaumburg. I am looking for dates from anyone around the Chicago/NW Indiana, Wisconsin area that wants to go. I have been speaking with Derek, my wonderful guide, who will set us all up. I just need dates from you all and who is going. We talked previously about doing a Meet in February. Does this still sound good to everyone?? Let me know.

Kelly:cool1:

We think Derek is wonderful too!:goodvibes

Hi Kelly,

Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question but who is your guy Derek? Does he work for Disney/DVC? How is he helping you with your meet? I volunteered to put together a Meet here in the Northeast for those of us out here, so any help you can throw my way would be fantastic!

Thanks!! :worship:

So, it looks as if my 13 month old laptop is dying on me. :headache::headache::headache: Same problem I had with my last HP laptop. I think the power cord got cranked at some point and now it doesn't want to charge unless I really play with the bit where the jack plugs into the laptop.

I'm wondering if I should just replace it with an iPad. What do you iPad users think? How well does the iPad work for reading and replying to posts here? Maybe I'll just throw in the dang towel and buy the macbook that I've been wanting for years. I just wish they weren't so darned expensive!!:sad2:
Here is my 2¢ worth. Yes, the iPad works great for reading and posting. IMO, it will do 98% of what you use a computer for, as well as a few other handy things when you travel, such as listen to audio books, music, play games, or watch movies and/or tv shows. GREAT battery life which is quite nice for when you are on planes for hours! You can use a wireless keyboard for it if you wish, but not a mouse, because it is solely touch screen based for navigation. On the other hand, yes, the MacBooks are expensive. They will do everything you want a computer to do because it is one. They are supposed to have long battery life too, although I can't vouch for the new ones. We have a G4 iBook which is still going strong after 5 years and the only problem we had was keeping too many pictures on it which took up a LOT of space. So, we moved them off of it to our desktop. Otherwise, everything is just as fast and smooth as when it was new. We did have to replace the battery a couple of years ago, which is to be expected with as much use as we give it!

So, IMO, the bottom line is that the iPad is sort of a computing version of your purse in that you have the necessary stuff that you need to carry around, as opposed to an item that is more like your file cabinet which is heavier but has everything. We have travelled to the UK with just our iPads and didn't miss the laptop a bit. Two of them weigh less and take up less space than a single laptop, although the new MacBooks would give them a run for the money in size comparison. BUT we have 2 of us who can use them vs sharing 1 computer.

I hope that I helped, although it might now be clear as concrete from all that. :scratchin If you have any more questions, drop me a PM, and I will be glad to be more specific. :teacher:
(After reading what I just wrote, it seems that personally, I vote both.)

I happened to catch this tidbit this evening ...
Quote:
According to national news sources, it is snowing in 49 states across the country including Hawaii where snow has fallen atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Florida is the only state without fresh snow.
Don't forget about Blizzard Beach! Too bad the Osborne Dancing Christmas lights aren't still up. They made snow for that too. I will see if I can post a pic of that later tonight. ;)

No, it doesn't sound good. It sounds wonderful! Can't wait to see you, Jim and Lilly again! I will let my social secretary (AKA Sue) take care of arranging the dates. :lmao:

GOOD MORNING, ITS COLD HERE:scared1: I THINK I SPOKE TOO SOON WHEN I SAID I HADNT TAKEN MY SHOVEL OUT OF THE GARAGE YET. YESTERDAY WE GOT 8 INCHES OF LIGHTWEIGHT SNOW. MY MIATA HAS SNOWTIRES ON IT SO I CAN STILL DRIVE IT:rotfl2: THE SNOW IS ALMOST UP TO THE OPENING OF THE DRIVERS DOOR:rotfl2: OH WELL AS LONG AS WE DONT GET SNOW WHEN WE ARE TO FLY OUT IN EARLY FEB. I KEEP READING ABOUT THE DISMEETS. I SEEM TO BE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE HERE:rotfl2: 8 HOURS TO SUEs IN NJ. AND ABOUT 8 HOURS TO THE CHICAGO AREA. HAVE FUN:thumbsup2

Kelly - I vote for either Saturday. Only because I don't want to have to worry about getting home early on a school night with the kids. :thumbsup2

What are everyone elses thoughts on that? I know it will be a majority rules type of decision, so if it is on a Sunday we will still be there of course! :goodvibes

We are pretty open, so whatever works for everyone.

I say go to the nearest Apple store and play with both of them for a while and see which one you like more.

I think I may do that. :thumbsup2 I also remembered that I can get $100 off of the MacBook two different ways. Federal employees can get a discount (the DH is one) and I can get a discount because I'm a homeschool teacher (through the education store). Doesn't look like there is a discount on the iPad though.

Thanks for all that info!! I have an iPhone 4 and have really been wanting an iPad for internet and reading (Kindle app). But, after some reflection, I really do need an actual laptop to run programs that I use somewhat frequently. Two of those programs don't run on Mac, but I read on both their support sites that you can install Windows on your new Mac and then run the programs through Windows on the Mac. Who knew? :rotfl:

Maybe I can sell my broken laptop for parts on eBay and make up a little of the money there. :confused3 Now I just have to convince the DH that we can spring for the MacBook. :headache: It's only about the cost of 18 video games, right? ;)

This sounds good to me. Saturday's are better for us (we bowl on Sundays at 5). Can't wait.

Good evening!

I will be watching eagerly to see what you finally decide etc. My buddy John and I were talking about each getting an iPad before the cruise. I have been a "PC" forever and am also considering a Mac. In fact, now that Verizon has the iPhone coming, I intend to go there this summer and switch my blackberry for the new iphone that should be out then.

Good luck with your decision. I also noticed that Apple does not offer a discount on the "smaller stuff" like iPads and iTouch

Ian! How have you been? Sorry that you finally got some of the New York Snow up there. :lmao:

That meet that the Chicago/Tri-State people are organizing sounds great. Fortunately, I have Sue nearby so ours should be outstanding also :woohoo: I was trying to remember who volunteered to organize the one WAAAAYYYYY North and it came to me as I was driving home tonight. It was Dudley! I am sure he will do a crack job if the task does not drive him nuts...:goodvibes

Be safe my friend!

Thanks! Yeah, no discounts on the really popular stuff. Although they do have a pretty good deal for students/teachers that runs every summer. If you buy a new Mac, you get an iPod Touch for free. Unfortunately, summer is a long way away still.

I am very glad you mentioned that. Although it does you no good, the summer is when I am planning to make my purchase. Should I decide on the Mac, not only can I get the discount but I can also get the iTouch (as long as they offer it again) I remember seeing it last summer when I checked the pricing but forgot about it.
