Has anyone read the book "Disney War"? DH and I are both in the process of reading it. We are sharing the book. He has one bookmark and I have another. So far, it is really "interesting". I highly recommend it!

I have read about half of it but have not picked it up in a few months. It is good and I do plan on finishing it.

Disney War is written by James B. Stewart. Stewart is a writer and reporter for The New Yorker. It is about the behind the scenes "politics" of the Disney Empire. Sometimes it read in first person, as if Michael Eisner wrote it. It doesn't make Michael Eisner or Jeffrey Katzenberg look very nice with their bickering and mistrust of each other. It is a very compelling book. I am only half way through and can't wait to get back to it. I know the ultimate outcome, but am curious how it got so out of hand. - Jennifer

I just made my reservations for our December stay before and after the cruise. It will be our first stay in our DVC "Home Resort" of SSR. We arrive on the 6th so we can hopefully meet up with some of you before we get on the ship. We'll leave for home on the 23rd.

DW and I are BOTH band geeks!!!! Between the two of us we have over 30 years of band history!! And before anyone asks, she IS a flute player and she DID go to band camp and that IS a rumor!!!

Both of us are "Band Geeks" particularly brass band. In our line of "work" you really have to be into brass bands (we're ministers with The Salvation Army). I grew up going to the Army's Band Camps.

Our DS not only was in the school band but also was a part of The Salvation Army's bands which can be just as rigorous (or more so) than the schools.

That's AWESOME!! What brass were you? I was primarily trombone, but with my degree I had to learn everything; brass, woodwinds, perc, etc. and LOVED learning the higher brass such as trumpet and french horn!! I always thought my dream job would be to become a performer at Disney!!

Our HS band teacher retired last year after 35 years. He was amazing, so we were interested to see how the new teacher was doing. The kids sounded great and they all seemed to have fun with him, so we were glad to see that. 35 years with many state championships is a hard act to follow.

DrHug played french horn for 12 years, age 9 thru 21. He commented to the french horn section last night how impressed he was with them.

OUr DGS plays flute. He is a neat kid who is very comfortable with who he is and does what he loves. He started playing flute in 7th grade because he loved it. He said when you are male and have played flute and football at the same time in junior high you can deal with anything! He is a junior in HS now and still loves playing the flute. His college plan is pharmacy (thinks Grandpa has a pretty good gig! ) but he said he would love to minor in music if he can. We talk with an admissions counselor next week, so we will see what she says. He would love to continue with band thru college.

"Well, before we did this, and that, and we won this many awards...." That's why I got out of education!! That and the Jr. high kids SCARED me, with having kids at age 11, 12, and up. Not to mention I had a 7th grader that was old enough to drive to school!!! I hit the doors pretty quick after all of that! But it worked out REALLY well though; my best friend ended up getting the position that I didn't go for.

I'll have to give DrHug major props when we meet. The french horn was the most difficult instrument I think I learned; just because it's so difficult to hit the right note. You two understand whatI mean! I'll tell you this from experience; he SHOULD be able to minor in music and major in whatever he wants! At the university my DW and I went to we had a LOT of people in the music program that were majoring in other fields and were still given partial scholarships to participate in the band. Maybe instead of a full tuition scholarship, the were given a half-tuition scholarship to do marching band or whatever requirements they gave us. We LOVED it, but mainly because that's where DW and I met; on the marching field!

I played a little tuba but I mainly played percussion. My DS grew up playing a cornet but can play just about any one now. He enjoys tuba.

Tuba was another one I really enjoyed learning, just because of the size and the larger mouthpiece was actually really comfortable change! But my all-time favorite class was percussion tech!! Especially when we got to the drumline section, but also when we got to the timpani part; being a trombone player I have to admit I have a really good ear so I blew everyone away at matching pitches on timpani. Ahh....the good 'ol days!! I miss it SO much sometimes!!!

My DH will have to get on here and talk "band" with y'all. He was in band in HS and a little bit in College I think. He also played football. He was well balanced as a youth. - Jennifer

I am sure y'all know about the Disney promos on "Year of a Million Dreams". A fellow DISer and her family were honored to stay in Cinderella's Castle recently. I thought it was neat and thought y'all would enjoy it too. . .

Our new instructor is not new to teaching. He came from a HS down in southern OR. The whole town just adores the previous guy though (including us) as he taught more than one generation of some local families. He was very involved in the selection of his replacement though and we have decided he did a good job there also. His last effort before retiring (and he postponed retirement at least one year to make this happen) was to get a new theater built with amazing accoustics. We parents/grandparents were talking last night about why the school board has not yet acted on the multitude of letters and phone calls asking that it be named for him. Our best friend is on the school board and we promised to lobby on a personnal level also.
