Why???? https://***********.com/2020/08/bre...music-loops-ahead-of-splash-mountain-closure/

I pouted for a while about the change to Splash Mountain. Please don't slam me. I get why it was done, but after 30 years I grew quite attached to that ride, and don't like change. But did DL really need to remove "Zip A Dee Doo Dah" from their music loops? Someone said in another post once that that song screams Disneyland. It's a classic! I LOVE that song. How could they??? ETA: I don't know why the link isn't working.

I think it’s sad.

I can understand changing the theming of the ride to a more popular movie. But the way it was explained to me, there wasn’t anything wrong with the song itself, just an oppressed character singing it in the film because it gave the impression that his life wasn’t that bad.

(I didn’t actually agree with that interpretation - I thought it implied that even people in crappy situations could enjoy the love of nature on a beautiful day...but I respect that others felt differently.)

Either way, though, I think the song out of that context should have been left alone.

I’m glad I have it on an old CD.

Well then your way of interpretation is spot on because only the cancel culture sees things in a way that could make everything in the world offensive. There are two sides to EVERY single coin and you could debate anything and make it bad. Re-writing history should be completely outlawed. They're going to be sorry 20 years from now when we end up having slaves again because the younger generation knows nothing of how far we've come....because it never happened. I mean they are well on their way with all of this "you have to be kind to everyone, and if you're not, then we hate you!" mentality. It's like watching that movie The Beach with DeCaprio.

Are there songs from other closed rides that still play in the parks? I'm trying to think of any but I'm coming up blank.

Well, for those who followed the Splash controversy, the song was part of it. Not to get in too deep, but while the song is an original composition it is heavily influenced by minstrel shows and the characters in them. We can debate as we did about Splash Mountain itself, but for some it is deemed offensive and that is the reason. They announced that they would no longer be using it in any parks at some point (prseumably once the Splash changeovers happened).

The song just makes me feel happy, no matter where I am, but especially in DLR. It tells me I am in Disneyland.
So if I were in DLR and started singing Zip a dee doo dah, would I be asked to stop because it might offend someone? I wonder.

I get that there are a lot of things that offend someone that don't offend me, and I also get that there are people searching diligently for anything to be offended by. So I try to find a balance between the two.

To me, Zip A Dee Doo Dah is about as happy and harmless as songs get -- but I can understand why some could be offended by the context, and therefore I understand why Disney would cancel it.

But I'm not gonna stop loving the song because to me there is absolutely nothing racial about it. To me, it's just
"Zip A Dee Doo Dah, Zip A Dee A
My, oh my, what a wonderful day!
Plenty of sunshine coming my way
Zip A Dee Doo Dah, Zip A Dee A!"

My friends used Zip a Dee Doo Dah as their recessional music at their wedding. I better go tell them how offensive it is and that need to overdub new music on their video. Her husband is in law enforcement too. Wow, the signs are really adding up. They are HUGE racists. Time to cancel that friendship.

This whole flipping world has gone crazy. I’ve said all long you can’t rewrite history and that’s about everything people get offended about not just a ride at a theme park what’s happened happened. You can’t forgot what’s happened. Nor rewrite history. Especially now there’s so much more to worry about. We’re still in a basically shutdown world. All these protests. People wanting to defund the police. What good is that going to do. Oh yea start a new program. Right now we have a program for a program. what gives the people the right to burn down cities. Right now Kenosha looks like a war zone. Which actually is what it went through. These cases though the police could have handled it differently but from I read they had dealings with this person before. And just what was he leaning inside the car for. The police have to make split second decisions if they had dealings before he could have been reaching for a gun no one knows In these cases people scream for justice. What about justice for the officers that get killed in the line of duty. Not saying to have a protest or burn places down over it but where is the justice for them. Sorry not sure how I got off on the police. One thing lead to another. It a sad sick stupid world for sure

This was my main concern when they announced the redo of the ride - the music. The Laughing Place song is also iconic.

Agreed. I will miss the music too. Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah was used in a lot of the parades too. Festival of Fantasy uses it. It's so Disney. For me, since it was an original creation and was used for more than just the one movie, I don't see a problem with it, but it's not only my opinion that should be considered, so I do understand.

Wait? You think we’re going to have slavery again in 20 years? Because we‘re collectively not going to remember it ever happened? And somehow it will not seem bad to enslave people because we changed a Disney ride and a corporation decided to stop playing a song?

If the argument for having a song that some people find offensive is you better let us have it or we’ll have slaves I think you are a step out of mainstream.

I think this is the main reason to take it out and not cancel culture. It doesnt make logical sense to keep music in from a ride that will not exist much longer, from a movie you cannot watch anymore.
Emotional sense... that is something else, but how long would it stay in the loop before it becomes obsolete? Besides the hard core fans like here on the DIS, it will only take a few years before the regular guest will start to forget.

But the more interesting question is, why did they do this now? What if they are already rebuilding the ride and it will be open at the reopening? Or soon after? I dont think there was an opening dat announced for the renewed ride?

With the ride still open in WDW it doesnt make sense to remove the music at DL now.
If it really was about cancel culture, enough to remove the music from the loop, then the ride would have been closed at WDW already.
