ZIKA IN FLORIDA!!! GOV. CONFIRMS LOCAL TRANSMISSION

I wonder how this will affect WDW visits.

Certainly those planning to get pregnant or pregnant will forgo a trip to WDW with this latest news!!!
I don't think I would. One transmission is not an epidemic. Will it eventually be an epidemic here? Possibly, but for now carrying on...
I hope officials and citizens take precautionary measures but don't make rash decisions based on media hype.
I do worry about the massive amount of chemical spraying I see in the future, which may in fact be short sighted in controlling this disease.
And I worry about the blood supply. Just donated yesterday due to several bad accidents leading to a shortage here.

I would keep a very close eye on the situation and await further information from the CDC. I am not usually alarmist about these types of things, but given what I've seen about the effects of Zika on a fetus, I would be very cautious about travelling to WDW this summer if I were pregnant. Hypothetically, if I were "trying" to get pregnant, I might consider it because I would be able to put the trying on hold, get tested and be sure I was cleared to start trying again.

If there is evidence that mosquitos in Florida are capable of transmitting the virus, that would cause me serious concern. If I were PG. I'm not having kids, so bring on Disney ;p

I'm pretty sure I heard on the news my state has a confirmed Zika case. Does that mean anyone pregnant shouldn't come to the state? According to the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/zika/geo/united-states.html), only 4 states don't have Zika cases.

I just think your second sentence is an over reaction.

This was an action of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Hopefully, they would not act rashly.

Also, just FYI, these are Florida's two most populous counties with a combined population of about 4.5 million people.

All of the states that have cases where infected somewhere else.
This is the first confirmed cases that were infected within the states.....FL.
Report says 4 cases.
And remember it isn't just women, men can transmit the virus also.

The difference is, these are confirmed local transmissions - as in, people were IN Florida and caught the virus from mosquitoes IN Florida. Most other states that have the virus (or perhaps ALL other states??) the virus came in via people who had recently visited areas with active Zika-bearing mosquitoes. I don't know what I would do if I were pregnant or hoping to become pregnant. Time will tell if this has any impact on wdw attendance.

There is a difference between having cases of Zika in your state (the result of travel) and having a case of Zika that started from a mosquito bite in your state.

This state has a zika case, and this state has mosquitos that are transmitting the virus are two very different scenarios. Until now, all cases of zika in the us were acquired while traveling to a different country.

I have a trip planned for September and I'm pregnant. I don't know that I will go. I may look into Disneyland or other destinations to avoid the risk and worry.

Why does it matter where the cases were contacted? Presumably the first cases in Florida were brought from people traveling to a different country. Texas and California have the same amount (more than 50) of cases as Florida. It's not that large a leap (IMO) that at some point those will spread locally.

From the first article linked:

. . . "These may be the first cases of local Zika virus transmission by mosquitoes in the continental United States," said the statement. The Florida Department of Health has yet to confirm how the people acquired the virus."

Sounds like a precaution, not a panic.

I'm not a real alarmist. But if I was pregnant or trying to become pregnant, I would probably hold off on a trip to Florida. It's not going anywhere.

Huge difference between having cases in the area and having transmissions in the area. Not the sort of roulette I would want to play.

I agree, AND we're talking about a VACATION! It's completely different if you happen to live in the area. If so, you do what you can to minimize your risk and then just go with it from there. If you're choosing to visit an area when you don't really HAVE to, it's just a different situation imo. I don't think I would take the risk for a vacation, not when there are plenty of other places to vacation that don't offer this particular risk. Obviously things can happen no matter where you go, we all have to make these choices for ourselves and for our own comfort level.

Yes, but earlier in the article it said they had ruled out travel and sexual transmission. What's left?

Because if the mosquitos in a region themselves become carriers, then that poses a much different transmission risk than person-to-person currently creates.

I at first wasn't concerned about Zika because they were all cases that had come from those who visited affected areas. However, I think now we are in a watch closely phase. 4 people in the Miami/Broward County area is not a big deal and that is a decent way from Orlando. However if you have a trip coming up and are pregnant or trying to get pregnant then it would be your best interest to monitor closely. Right now all should be taking precaution just to try and not spread the virus. In NYC they are being over zealous and telling women and partners of women if you want to get pregnant in the next year or are currently pregnant do not travel to places with known transmission of the virus.

Does anyone know if this is something you can get tested for after it has left your body? After I spent a week in Cancun at the beginning of the out break I got the sickest I have ever been in my adult life. It was like the flu but took almost a month to completely recover from. I was wondering if it is possible it could have been Zika but since I'm now better have no clue if it is something that be tested for or if it is like the flu where once you are healthy you can't know for sure what it was.
