ZIKA IN FLORIDA!!! GOV. CONFIRMS LOCAL TRANSMISSION

There is zero evidence of a correlation of Zika having any effect on a fetus. ZERO. Over MEDIA-FED-HYPE reaction.

Why does it matter where the cases were contacted? Presumably the first cases in Florida were brought from people traveling to a different country. Texas and California have the same amount (more than 50) of cases as Florida. It's not that large a leap (IMO) that at some point those will spread locally.

The difference is some areas do not have the type of mosquitos that can carry the virus, so the risk of it being locally transmitted are lower. Local transmission is how the virus will become a larger issue on the US. Once it becomes locally transmitted it will spread quickly in those areas (from what I have read).

I live in an area where the mosquitos that can transmit he virus exists but no local cases yet. I am trying to get pregnant, my family lives in Florida.

I will not be traveling there anytime soon, I also wear bugs spray regularly. It's a calculated risk.

Um there is a ton of evidence. It is not media fed over hype. Try telling that to the mothers whose children are born disabled or died in utero due to this. There are currently many more studies trying to prove why it affects the fetus. Do you think research money would be wasted on such a thing if there was no real correlation?

Well... yes, I do believe research money gets "wasted" all the time, but in this case I happen to believe there is likely a correlation. ;)

True. Sometimes research money is wasted on useless things but I don't think the medical research industry would be throwing money at Zika if there wasn't a real issue. They need it to be a real issue so they can make a vaccine and profit off of it. If there is no real damage done by Zika then a vaccine would not be profitable. Of course some conspiracy theorist will claim that is exactly why there is media over hype and there is nothing to be worried about but they want you to think there is so you buy the eventual vaccine.

If you reacted to every warning that happens, you would never leave your house.

It is still up to the individual to determine what warning is worth taking into consideration. Yes reacting to every warning would be ridiculous but determining if the risk it worth it to you personally is not. There will still be pregnant women who travel because they believe the risk is worth it and that is up to them.

Exactly. I drank some caffeine and ate lunch meat when I was pregnant. But I would choose not to visit FL if this had come up then.

I worry for my DIL and other young women like her, where work dictates regular trips into Zika areas and staying in hotels where you aren't in control of cleanliness, open stagnant water etc where the mosquitos breed. These are the prime age group for getting married and then starting families. I'm going to talk to her this evening to see what her employer is recommending.

Ok, I admit I am very confused. You are the OP of this thread, right?

Certainly those planning to get pregnant or pregnant will forgo a trip to WDW with this latest news!!!

If you think its all hype why the bold caps and all the exclamation points?

Although we are looking at 4 cases out of 2 huge counties, there are also people who are infected but show zero symptoms. If there are 4 confirmed cases of Zika (even if transmission source isn't confirmed, virus infection has been) there are very likely more infected who either don't have symptoms or who had minor symptoms and did not seek medical attention. I wouldn't take the 4 out of 4 million as being automatically statistically irrelevant.

I'm cautiously concerned at this point.

Ah, so glad I'm old and can't have kids. My son is grown and is currently in Costa Rica where there have been cases. He also has a compromised immune system due to a viral infection in his spinal cord (caught that sucker in Chicago while a corpsman working in a VA hospital, so good excuse as any not to go to Chicago) and is single. I asked if he was worried before he left, he said nope, kay sera sera.

I would like to know the answer to this as well. Although it's starting to become clear.
