Younger generation- spinoff

Not hearing criticism of my generation these days is one advantage of being a member of the Forgotten Generation (Gen X).

My mom was born 2 days before the official beginning of the Baby Boomer Generation so she get very indignant if someone calls her a Boomer. :rolleyes2

This is also my biggest peeve.

Gen x here, the younger generations have taught me so much.

My 4 kids have helped me learn so much. They are kind, compassionate, accepting, empathetic, hardworking kids. I also have one working 60- 70 hours a week and know of no kids not working or workingand going to school.

I have such hope for the world. The younger generations can not come of age to rule quickly enough.

I think there is a lot of intergenerational trauma focused on many things like military service/war, substance abuse, religion, racism, sexism, classism and poverty. In my opinion, recent generations are the first to really address these issues head on when in past generations expressing feelings and taking care of your mental health made you soft, crazy, lazy or whatever other negative connotations.

so true!
Younger generations are leaps and bounds ahead in that area.

That's because the defining characteristic of our entire generation is that we are ignored and overlooked. :flower1:

And we don’t care. LOL!

Gen-Xers rule!

During the height of the pandemic, I loved all the different memes & articles that floated around saying that, at the end of everything, Generation X would be the generation left standing… because we’d practically been in training for the pandemic (& everything that the pandemic brought w/ it) our whole lives.

We’re independent, self-reliant, ignored, overlooked loners... and generally have a “reality bites” kinda attitude.

But, as a Gen-Xer, gotta admit, I do find myself sometimes annoyed by both Boomers & Millenials, & I’ll just be over here watching the Boomers & Millenials fight it out.

In all seriousness, my husband & I are textbook Gen-Xers raising Gen-Zers. And, maybe I’m bias, but I do see a difference between the Gen-Zers & the Millenials.

Along those same thoughts, just recently, I read an article discussing the different generations, &, according to the article, most of the Boomers raised the Millenials while most of the Gen-Xers are raising the current Gen-Zers… which makes sense, especially when you look at the supposed overall characteristics of each generation.

And, yes, it’s bad to lump everyone together & think anything of a person just because of their generation, & “I believe children are our future. Teach them well & let them lead the way…”

But, as others have said, there are reasons why generations get characterized certain ways.

As a millennial, no we are not.

I absolutely hate the criticism of younger generations. It's been happening since the beginning of time. I actually see great things in gen Z. They are unwilling to accept poor treatment, are open-minded, and hard working.

Even Aristotle complained about the younger generation:
“[Young people] are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstances.

They think they know everything, and are always quite sure about it.”
A lot of the criticism I see about younger generations seems to trace back to the fact that they won't accept the treatment some older generations did. I give them a lot of credit because I didn't have the guts to push back on my employers at their age. I have definitely benefitted from their changing of societal norms and I think they have moved society in the right direction.

Absolutely. My Dad who I liked to call “a working hippie” was very peace and love, openly cried, a very sensitive soul balked when I said I was thinking about seeing a therapist. “We don’t do that.”

As mentioned above my kids have really taught me to be a better person. I may have raised them to be open and accepting but they’ve really shown me how to embrace it.

It so much depends when you had your kids doesn’t it.
My BFF raised 3 millennials (youngest is 29) while as an older mom my teens are firmly in the Gen Z.
Her and I are early 50s so squarely Gen X.

my parents were the silent generation they were born early 1940s.

24 years after his death, they probably would be interesting reading. At least you aren't reading his stories from the Sacramento Union. He left that paper in 1936.
Herb was the precursor to Social Media....

Eh. Plenty of blanket statements about older people too. "OK Boomer" is no better than "Kids these days". It's all a way of dismissing wide swaths of society without taking the time to get to know them individually.
I agree but I think the millennial thing is a lot bigger than other generations. I think it's more because of the evolution of the internet. In the olden days you complained to your neighbor, news magazines picked up stories here and there but the sheer amount of things talked about for millennials it's just almost toxic. I mean that does go for other things like "a Karen" and whatnot but in terms of speaking about generational stereotypes so much.

I agree with your first two points. I disagree with the third. Someone has to pick up the slack from them not doing things that are part of their job but they don't want to do. Usually, it is an older worker. My daughter, at the ancient age of 30 was over yesterday complaining about how a 22 year old trainee was pushing back on doing tasks that are clearly in her job description. So the age difference doesn't have to be huge.
