Cane's gig as Phillip Chancellor III appears to be up this week when he's forced to take another DNA test to prove who he really is. Daniel Goddard discusses the surprise story twist.
WEEKLY: You've been playing the good guy for so long. Are you welcoming the change to get back to Cane's darker roots?
GODDARD: It's adding a third dimension to Cane, and I'm excited about it. I've always wanted to establish Cane's backstory; to find out who he really is and where he's from.
WEEKLY: So you weren't concerned about leaving Phillip Chancellor III behind?
GODDARD: Peter Bergman once said to me, "Don't try to control the situation. Take the storyline they write for you and run with it, because at the end of the day, it's your job to deliver it." He told me to deliver it to greater expectations than the writers hoped for.
WEEKLY: Things start out with Cane learning Phillip III's exhumation is under way and pondering if he should leave town.
GODDARD: Yes. The walls are closing in on Cane. He's looking at this passport and getting his things together, deciding whether or not this is something he's prepared to weather -- because it's going to be a huge storm -- when Lily arrives.
WEEKLY: Does seeing her tug at his heart strings and make him reconsider?
GODDARD: Of course, but if anything, it plays on his conscience. It's more a cerebral pull than a heart pull.
WEEKLY: Back at the Chancellor Estate, Nina, Jill and Kay learn there was no body in the casket. What happens next?
GODDARD: Jill comes to the bar to see Cane and tells him about it. She asks him to take another DNA test for her.
WEEKLY: What is Cane's reaction?
GODDARD: He doesn't want to do it. At the end of the day, the pressure of the facade is starting to get to him. He realizes the hurt he's going to cause. It's more about realizing the effect of his actions than being caught. But Cane agrees to take the test.
WEEKLY: Lily tells Cane that no matter what the results are, she will love him. Is she starting to realize he might be a fraud?
GODDARD: No. Not at all. She has asked Cane on multiple occasions, "Is there anything you need to tell me?" And he's been like, "No. There's nothing to talk about." That just comes from the same of realizing the damage he's about to do to this girl.
WEEKLY: Later, Cane opens a freezer and pulls out vials of blood labeled "Langley." Is he planning to use them for the DNA test?
GODDARD: Yes. That's really Cane's only course of action. When you start to see more of Cane's backstory, who he is and where he came from, there's a reason he needs what he has now and doesn't want to lose it. However, when everything starts to come out -- who Phillip is, who Langley is, and who Cane is -- Cane starts to question whether it's even worthwhile trying to keep up the facade. There are a lot more twists and turns coming down the pike.

I agree with you both - if I found out my child wasn't biologically mine, I think I wouldn't sleep til I found the real one! Duh! Maybe it's the Violet lady that Cane claims bought him from Mrs. C....now there's a whole new twist. I'm so loving this whole storyline, I was such a huge fan of Phillip/Nina, etc. back in the day.
& Lily were great together...someone send me a PM on what happen to them. I haven't watched in 20 years!
